Can a user really do BI from the desktop?

Northwald
Meh

Don't forget performance

Unfortunately, many ERP and CRM systems that I have experience of are designed for transactions and not data mining. Therefore, unless seperate images or infrastructure is planned in, the regular daily users tend to get poor performance.

Also, if dedicated BI data and infrastructures are not provided, power users inclined towards "ad-hoc" queries tend to lock up systems for critical minutes (which may be the critical life cycle of a data user).

MPs: 999 HQ revamp FAIL cost £469m

I agree with you, and supports the positive action of Edinburgh Council to disband internal project management organisation - tie - in favour of a slightly more expensive external organisation to manage the tram project. The muppets are there to oversee, but the real management should be done by professional organisations.

DfE probed over Gmail use for official business

Wont be long before gmail is hacked or these accounts exposed and they will get on their high horses about security.

Reciprical benefits

Regarding (Sir) Paul S's conduct, surely the acid test for any benefit in kind is to assess what a person receiving a benefit can do i return. So, if a beat cop is given a free kebab, what can he be expected to do in return - probably very little. Therefore, what obligation is PS under to the spa owner? Both worry me, and this just suggests that PS jumped before he was found out!

Devolution is not independance

For clarity, most Scots, myself included, do not want independance but want more say in our affairs - which is devolution [of decision making].

Mr Neil does not help our case by winging about lack of funds when it is clearly more of a share than our neighbours. Mt Neil should pick his fights which do not make us Scots out to be money grabbers or looking for unfair advantage.

Not much better with Ubuntu

After installing a new distro of Ubunto (11.4) only 3 weeks ago, I have a message indicating 58 updates required. So, not much better in the alternative market although I concede there is little prospect of these "maintainers" recovering their costs from joe public, other than sales to big business. Must go, updates are in region of 600Mb....

MPs slam 'unworkable' one-size-fits-all NHS care records' system

WTF?

No opt out clause in contracts these days?

Are all government contracts lacking any kind of cancellation or close down clauses? As a client facing project manager, I have always had these clauses to protect both parties from these situations (i.e. in the event of a total screw up, grab your coat!).

I always wonder how...

I do not have a lot of technical knowledge, but the video gave a good simple explanation as how the malware was loaded. Nothing about how to stop it though, or how you would know other than your virus protector picking it up.

Efficiency and Reform Group 'has saved over £3bn'

Pint

Is this a saving?

Is "saving" the same as efficiency? That is, if I do not spend any money, am I being efficient with my money or not?

I recall the Philip Green report that highlighted the rediculously high cost of some items being bought (same box of paper for £8 and £73, same laptop £353 and £2000).

I wonder if the figures in this report indicates money not being spent, or being a bitter smarter.

A beer, either drowning my sorrows or toasting their success.

Can cloud save the NHS?

Northwald
FAIL

Totally unnecessary

As an active (unwilling) participant of the NHS, I would suggest that all this is unnecessary expense for little gain. We have a very successfull "emergency" records system in the country that provides immediate information on background and contact information. Beyond that, IMHO, we should only have detailed medical records at one location, the primary location for treatment. In the vast majority of long term treatment, this is satisfactory, and avoids issues of confidentiality, dupliction, accuracy and dare I say ownership. I only want one physician managing my treatment, not a virtual team. Limit the electronic sharing to appointments.
