Cloud no cure for IT department haters

Cloud & Mainframe

Isn't it funny how much "cloud" computing corresponds to getting "a tiny sliver of mainframe time"?

Really stupid how we've come from centralised (mainframe) to decentralised (PC's and mini-computers) and are now going back to centralised (cloud)...

Encryption...

The only real solution would be to have the data stored in the cloud encrypted, and the decryption being done on the local (i.e. end-user) side... so for a company, they could have the decryption on the firewall machine, and thus decrypted data available to the users. As soon as data goes back to the cloud, the firewall should encrypt the outgoing stream... leaving the cloud provider to store (in his eyes) total gibberish, which can not be interpreted by any agency that comes knocking without having to go to the end-user! Problem solved...

WTF?

Maybe...

...it is a good time to define what this "cloud"-ed environment really is?

The way I understand it, services are outsourced to a partner who in turn outsources it to other providers, and in the end the original user has no idea where his/her data and computing power comes from, but only sees the results...

Is this the perception of others as well? Or are we all confusing the current "cloud" buzzword with (flexible) space/power rented in a data center?

(WTF because I am really getting confused... ;) )
