Windows 10 to force you to use Edge, even if it isn't default browser

1Rafayal

Hang on, I am a Windows 10 fan - but isnt this what the court cases in the 90's were all about?

Wasnt there a legal ruling that stated MS couldnt force you into using a specific browser?

Plus, I dont like Edge, I like Chrome.

According to good old Wikipedia, the Energia was apparently able to loft 110 tons to LEO.

I didnt think it had flown more than once, but apparently it took both the Buran and Poylus into orbit.

It's a decade since DevOps became a 'thing' – and people still don't know what it means

1Rafayal

Re: DevOps is still snake oil

Devops is simply making developers own their own work as opposed to them picking up tickets and checking in code. It also gives them a level of ownership over how their applications are deployed and how their infrastructure is built etc.

Thats pretty much it.

The rest of it, the conferences, the books etc, you dont need it. Anyone who says they dont need any devops software is lying to themselves - you think you can get away with no SCM? Or a build server? Or something like a Jira?

Re: Advantages

What about the weight of the batteries?

I am not nay saying the idea of an electric plane, I quite like the idea personally. But what is the landing weight of a long range jet liner at the moment? Surely they burn most of the take off weight during the long flights they undertake?

If you start flinging batteries into the equation, wouldnt that make the landing weight of the plane heavier than a traditional fuel burning plane? Especially given that it would also carry a generator and the fuel to power it? Or is all of this balanced out so the total weight of the plane plus fuel is less than that of a fuel burning plane with its tanks full?

New Amiga to go on sale in late 2017

1Rafayal

Turns out research was all I needed to do...

It would appear that the V4 is capable of running in a standalone mode, but this board will be a different SKU - there will be three versions in total.

Nice to see it support the CDTV, now can justify splashing out on one.

1Rafayal

I actually have a Blizzard 1260 installed in my A1200, which makes it awesome. but it also cost a huge amount for what it does.

However, I have yet to see a price for these cards... Am a little confused as to how they actually work, given they can act as a standalone Amiga..

No, Apple. A 4G Watch is a really bad idea

1Rafayal

@Lee D

I dont think soft SIM cards will be a thing any time soon, even though it is probably the best thing that could happen to smart phones in the last 10 years.

I would imagine it would open up a whole new avenue for SIM piracy.

1Rafayal

It doesnt need 4G functionality.

It needs to work with Android.

You are assuming that Microsoft will dominate the OS landscape in its totality.

This isnt the case and as long as people are given the choice of OS, will never be the case.

Skype for Business is not Skype – realising that is half the battle

1Rafayal

Skype for Business/Lync is just a pain in the arse.

MS basically need to offer a unified client that adapts to either a business or personal context. I know the switch from Lync to Skype for Business has only recently taken place, so it can only get better, given where it is right now.

However, things like Slack just work better

The Linux cloud swap that spells trouble for Microsoft and VMware

Kind of ignores the fact that VMWare is actually planning on releasing (if they havent already) on AWS.

So that means you can instantiate compute instances that run across the cloud, the DC and the server room in one go.

This isnt about his constitutional rights.

He was fired because he didnt carry out an instruction he was given.

1Rafayal

Re: Was it wise to fire him?

A constructive dismissal is a situation where your employer has made it impossible for you to carry out your duties.

This guy was fired for not doing what he was told to do. So no, I dont think this is grounds for a contructive dismissal.

Defend yourself against ISP tracking in an Trump-era free-for-all

1Rafayal

Re: Good ideas, but...

@Roland,

ISP's typically dont block VPN connections.

Same goes for RDP, they can block the standard port, but that doesnt stop you from connecting on a different port, one that ISP's have no clue about.

As far as I know right now, the only ports blocked by UK ISP's are for email.

1Rafayal

Re: Good ideas, but...

Again, corporate use.

How could an ISP in the UK find a good reason for banning VPN connections when a large part of our office workforce uses them either to connect to services at work, or to connect to work from home?

Or is this "elitism"?

Agile isnt the reason this project failed.

It failed because its a government IT project and would have failed regardless of the project methodology used.

Re: Agile doesn't work

How is Agile less secure than a waterfall methodology?

Or any other project management methodology?

1Rafayal

Re: Agile doesn't work

Sounds like you dont know what Agile actually is. It goes beyond the work of one single developer.

The whole point of Agile is to deliver small amounts of work on a very regular basis, it doesnt have anything to do with the individual talents of any one person - much in the same way as every project methodology doesnt rely on this.
