Oh the fat tanker is going round and round

Round and round it goes, where the buck stops – nobody knows. It stops at Ballmer’s CEO door. The MS boys are just not inspired to steer the ship where it’s meant to go. It hasn’t hit an iceberg yet, still in deep Blue waters. When it does hit something hard – like a solid x86 non-Microsoft Operating System, then you’ll see the captain jump ship: I’m sure Ballmer will have an escape route contingency company somewhere to sneek to.

IE is stupid! But Im too lazy to learn Chrome

Why is Chrome and Opera taking centre stage? IE is a joke! I just can’t understand why, despite MS claims that its better than ever, it’s actually a pain. It crashes – without fail every time I fire it up the first time. I have to force it to shut down, only then will it start to work. I’m too lazy to learn Chrome – I just don’t think limiting XP to IE8 only - is a wise decision. MS YOUR DAYS ARE NUMBERED!

Yes, this may impact us “normal” users. I’ve multi-booted my main i7 PC – blah blah; when I turn off and go to bed, then I boot again in the morning – the bios is set to force subsequent boot-ups to Win 8 only. I have to restart Win 8 to get my BIOS boot up menu again; since I use that to multi-boot each OS drive. This is a presumption from Microsoft – they’re insisting we boot Win8! I DON’T LIKE IT MS!!

"Hi I’m a Mac, and this is my sister Paddy"

Blame the guy – pretending to be CEO of a highly advanced – sophisticated – awesomely cool – technology corporation. The Bald-guy needs to take a back seat; he’s been an utter frump for MS, ever since Vista wrecked the reputation of MS. I don’t think Apple will run those “Im a Mac, Im a PC” adds anymore – it would be in poor taste – like kicking a dead dog.

Hhhhuuuurr – makes me shiver if those adds were to show up again; “Hi I’m a Mac, and this is my sister Paddy, she’s cool; Hi I’m a PC, this is my Grandma – and she cleans surfaces by licking with her tongue. She sucks.”

Microsoft blasts PC makers: It's YOUR fault Windows 8 crash landed

David Strum
Linux

Microsoft lost the touch – not having touch and is very touchy.

We hear what you’re saying Reg. You don’t want to take sides in a tiff between Corporate Devas. It seems however, that reading between the lines, Microsoft is just plain angry at how its Win8 horse came in limping - in the race to catch peoples dwindling Christmas cash-blowout. But what’s an eye opener is its attitude, which in the days of Bill Gates, would have been unthinkable. It’s basically throwing its pictured-CEO weight around, like a spoilt brat, without the grace to ask OEMs nicely. Mind you, the PC makers aren’t exactly the public’s best friend; I mean fancy selling an OAP a Vista machine with only 1gig of Ram inside! They’re all out and out dodgy dealers: they’ve messed up, and they’ve only themselves to blame. But this shows how human Microsoft is – at the end of the financial year – very much like its pictured-heavy-weight CEO; a tubby tyrant whose lost touch.

Tanker is hasn’t run aground yet

The Big Elephant that no one wants to kick in the behind is that Ballmer fellow…

I’m just glad I missed the hype and used logic to resist the urge to go buy what seemed an essential new toy. I’ve got it installed on my PC, and it really REALLY looks out of place nestled next to XP and Win 7; like Vista is the missing link in my Multi-boot progression of OS’; but Win-8 just looks like a mutant.

I had a bad feeling about it right from the start; and sad to say, my instincts were right. But MS will now try to right the wrongs, that Corporate bullheadedness has inflicted on itself; I fear it’s too late. The Microsoft Tanker is hasn’t run aground yet, but its helplessly going round and round in circles in the high seas of Corporate competition.

Re: Excuse me Reg - your talking cr4p

Why, what do you buy in a recession?

Err, food, fuel and things around the house that needs mending. I don’t buy a monthly or quarterly stock of iPhones or iPads. I don’t dash out in an emergency to pick up a small tin of Desktop goodness, just for the hell of keeping up the image of being Technology affluent. This talk of PC sales being down, is like the talk they have about Tesco and Asda sales being down; and "poor old Morrisons, just made it 4th place."

Honestly, I build PCs, and despite my yearning to splash out and have CityLink drop off the latest Motherboard with USB3 as standard, I realize I still have the choice of ignoring the hype and keeping my feet firmly grounded in the real costly-world. Economies should not be built on PCs, tablets and computers: and people should be allowed the dignity to think – computers are not the be all and end all – worth-while quarterly investment the market men seem to want us to believe. Excuse me Reg, I know that without this push for ever new gadgets, you would have to layoff staff, and you may have lower your Webpage counts. But….! No, honestly, you can’t judge a market purely by the level of sales during a recession. All that tells you is the number of well off gadget addicts who have money or credit to burn. There’s still a whole army of PCs in people’s houses, and laptops being thrown about in kids bedrooms. The tablet thing is just hype! I just can seriously buy into one, just for the hell of believing media sites like you and market promo.

Win 8 is really not that good! Has anyone else sensed it?

I’ve just installed Win8 on my great-not-so-rubbish-once-highend-PC-because-6-months-is-old, and it really looks out of place and rather retro. It looks and feels like XP when you remove all the eye-candy and set the graphics for max performance. It’s horrid! I can’t believe I liked it! Maybe it was because I initially installed it on a Laptop; an old Inspiron 6400 – whooo hoo; and I got the graphics working too! I prefer Win7 actually, it looks more inviting rather than the drab-austere feel to Win8. I think this OS is the lean twin of Vista. It's at the opposite end of its flabby-slug-like sibling, very fast, but inordinately drab. I’ve got a GTX 570 and expected a bit more eye-candy from this pallet-challenged Ballmer attempt at “The Latest.” Win 8 is really not that good! Has anyone else sensed it?

Report: Tablets to outsell ALL PCs by 2016

David Strum
Headmaster

They may be old, but I like old

I know PCs are really looking old and tired; I got a super-gaming tower the other day given - that would have cost about £80 when new; I wanted to throw it in the bin! It just looked horribly big and archaic. But I simply think tablets won’t replace PCs or to be more accurate - Desktops; they may replace laptops though. So it as far as trends go, I think Desktops will morph into our HTPCs (we want the big screen experience still - not the weedy 10inch offering despite its HD credentials), whilst tablets and laptops will morph into a hybrid handheld form. I just can’t see me doing work whilst trying to balance a little slate with my hands. Tablets and Desktops are the same difference between reading a magazine and writing a letter: to me a tablet is too distracting. Unless stylus technology really improves, I prefer typing to touchscreen. But predictions like these are so insignificant, since if they fail to materialize, no one pulls the media men up for making such a stupid prediction.

Android forever

Looks like the writing is on the wall for MS. Google seems to have gone back to basics; people prefer cheap to expensive, reliability to affordability, simplicity over gimmickry. It means we technicians could be out of a job – if things turn out as expected; Windows finally kicks the bucket and becomes just as ubiquitous as a screen saver, and future OSs just simply works without update hassle. I do wish MS starts to realise people are sick and tired having these Updates interrupting their computing time; really, this is what’s killing Windows off. Fix that, and honestly, Windows will live forever; like XP – which now hardly gets updates.

No, the vast majority of us are sick of buying new

It’s alright for a few gadget addicts, with plenty of cash to burn. But I suspect schools who have just shelled out a couple of grand on desktops, just can’t jump on the band waggon and throw them away for tablets. There is an uneasiness that starts to become obvious to us punters, that MS and the rest, are taking the mick; having a laugh at our expenses as they rip open our dwindling wallets.

I’m just sick of being told my PC is now 6 month old, time for a new one. Sick to death; sc****w you MS. I’m not playing or paying anymore.

Is this the last gasp for the Redmond behemoth, or a life changing moment that will pave its future reinvention? Who knows? And who really cares? All people are wanting at the moment are cash to feed the necessities and their holidays. They don’t care how they get access to the Internet; so long as it’s secure and fast. Windows is not really that important in people’s minds, just what Windows can allow them to do - is what they care about. So all that hardware and money pumped into PCs are all of a sudden gone in a puff of Trend-fever? I DON’T THINK SO REG! In times of austerity, people are not going to all rush out to buy small screened replacements for their big screen behemoths. We know it’s moving towards smarter gadgets, but the main problem with tablets is the small screen. It may be possible to connect it to your 52inch TV at home, but I seriously doubt people will just dump their PCs because Apple and Microsoft demand they do. The idea does not ring true from both the majority of low budget consumers and mainstream suppliers. It only makes sense to Apple and smart phone manufacturers, and they’d love us to go their way. But they are living in cloud cuckoo land if they expect to sell their wares at the prices they demand.

Microsoft or Motherspider

In other words – the Mother Spider has worked itself to death, and now the little ones are eating her remains to continue the cycle. Microsoft has been a great driver in computer technology; but now that the idea of “Windowing” the computer screen is well established, the frontier has shifted to what is presented and by what hardware – not “what novel Operating System” does the presentation.

But I disagree that Software is Dead entirely: it’s more like the novelty of the Operating System has lost its prime appeal. Who really cares if it’s Windows 7, 8, 9 or 1000? as long as we get our pictures, videos and emails sent! But applications and games will still be selling – even if they are just 10p each.
