Suspected dark-web meth dealers caught by, er, 'using real address' when buying stamps

emmanuel goldstein

Re: For fun..

I don't think the article stated they were conducting business using bitcoin. They may have used Monero which is very much more anonymous. And even if they were using bitcoin, it is quite common for these types to use "tumbling" services which make it hard to trace the final wallet address.

These stories are also interesting in that it seems L.E. are still unable to penetrate the markets themselves and have to rely on analogue detective work.

And yes, I would like to know how the $8.8 million figure was arrived at.

but other components of differentl (sic) varieties of cannabis do.

No they don't.

emmanuel goldstein

Totally agree with you. Cannabis (THC) does not cause anything like an hallucinogenic state and it is important that these fallacies are debunked because it is precisely this kind of misinformation that politicians regurgitate in their ridiculous "war on drugs". Rant over, I'm off for a (non hallucinogenic) spliff.

emmanuel goldstein

Re: So this was sometime BC?

Good one.

emmanuel goldstein

Molly? Er, isn't "Molly" the U.S. term for MDMA? Also, I'm quite skeptical that smoking cannabis (if that is indeed what you are talking about) can cause hallucinations. This is a field I am very familiar with (!) and even the very strongest strains (>20% THC) do not cause open eye visuals, I can assure you of that.

You're on thin ice there, my friend! Peacehaven is hardly a contender for most attractive town in the UK.

emmanuel goldstein

Excellent idea

Anyone who has spent more than 10 minutes in Newhaven knows that anything that even remotely adds a bit of zip to the place is a good thing. No disrespect to Newhaven or the good residents intended, it's just a bit sad looking.

Great Scott! Bitcoin to consume half a per cent of the world's electricity by end of year

emmanuel goldstein

Re: What a load of bollocks this bitcoin is!

I've said this before, but as far as I can see, bitcoin is only a tool used by criminals and hackers. It has no real-world application. Not really. Not when you think about it.

With all due respect, that statement says more about your lack of vision and, dare I say it, ignorance of the technology, than it says about crypto-currencies.

emmanuel goldstein

Re: Black Mirror, yet again..

I think the old "tulip" trope is getting a bit, er, old. Bitcoin et al. are becoming more and more assimilated into the mainstream banking system in particular and into 21st century culture in general. Ignore and mock all you want but I suspect you will turn out to be on the wrong side of history.

In fact Munger went even further, even more bat-shit crazy in his hate for Bitcoin:

“Suppose you could make a lot of money trading freshly harvested baby brains. Would you do it?” Munger asked.

“To me bitcoin is almost as bad.”

The more the likes of Buffet and Munger display this kind of weird, pathological hatred of crypto, the more I think it may be the future.

Tesla launches electric truck it guarantees won't break for a million miles

emmanuel goldstein

Re: Delivery

I agree and I'm quite pessimistic when it comes to Tesla's future. The financials are dire - the company is burning around $16 million dollars PER DAY! And the 2025 Tesla Bond price is falling off a cliff - which has repercussions in terms of debt repayment. Not to mention the imminent curtailing of the $7,500 tax credit for buyers. Even if the tax credit is not killed off by the politicians (which The House of Representatives wants to do), it automatically starts to phase out once manufacturers sell 200,000 vehicles.

I suspect the name refers to this Doctor Syntax, a comic character created by William Coombe and cartoonist Thomas Rowlandson in the early 19th Century.

Ethereum is the name of the decentralised platform. The value tokens for this platform are known as Ether, so it's more accurate to say "Ether tanks". The article itself seems a bit confused on this point too.

The energy cost of modifying the bitcoin blockchain is in itself a (not unrelated) concern.

The fact that there are alternative (already existing or potential) crypto currencies which may be less expensive to use, amongst other advantages, is the reason why I think BTC is not going to keep going up in value.
