UK.gov denies 'Google tax' plan

Jonathan Schofield

Will this tax really.....

.... be used for the intended purpose? Just like Road Tax or National Insurance?

Microsoft names Windows 7 RC1 dates

Jonathan Schofield

I like it.... Really....

I am running build 7000 on my Dell XPS M1330 as my main PC. No real problems, only one crash in the last few months, and rare re-boots even when using twin screens at work and then going home and VPN into the work network etc.

Only issue is when browsing our network, sometimes it takes ages, sometimes it's really quick....

Also the RAM runs at 60 - 80 % even when nothing is open.

Bootleggers jump on 'complete' Windows 7

Jonathan Schofield

Been running the Beta for 2 months

Apart from the explorer issues (painfully slow and patchy across our domain network) I have no problems at all. In fact I quite like it. Running on a Dell XPS M1330 with 2GB ram

When I come to the office I twin screen it... works "straight out the box". Shut the lid, go home and connect to VPN..... Only rebooted twice since I got it.

Info chief slaps Met on CCTV in pubs

Jonathan Schofield

Hope the wife can't see it!

This is an appalling intrusion, and yet another example of our descent to a police state where we are encouraged to sneak on each other.

I fear it is nearly too late to prevent this.....

Windows 7 'upgrade' doesn't mark XP spot

Jonathan Schofield

It gets my vote!

I have been running 7 for three weeks now, and apart from some issues with Exploring on our Domain it's fabulous. Dell XPS M1330. I might even buy a proper copy.........

National Safety Council seeks total* cell-phone driving ban

Jonathan Schofield

This'll stir it up!

I am of the opinion that if you don't have the brain capacity to talk and drive at the same time then perhaps you should do neither.

Demise of British tank industry foretold admitted

Jonathan Schofield

I agree with....

....Anonymous coward.

When I was using a chieftain many moons ago it was able to hit a target 22 miles away (with a bit of luck) and a good gunner / loader team could get three rounds in the air. A squadron of those could be a fearsome combination. A more reliable engine may have helped, but I still think that there is a need for these vehicles.

Cellular repeaters: Can you hear me now?

Jonathan Schofield

Just what I need

I have an insatiable urge for an IPhone, sad I know but O2 does not work too well where I live and Vodafone is the only working alternative. Because of this I was first in the queue for the Blackberry Storm with which I am sorely disappointed. There seem to be too many software glitches and I have lost a few calls and called a few wrong numbers due to Fat Finger Syndrome. The IPhone is just so much more sexy.

This lust for technology is crazy, when I was at school the pocket calculator did not exist and "photocopying" was done with a hand powered Xerox machine utilising a form of carbon paper wrapped round a drum. It was a punishment duty to crank out the copies and then clean the machine; I soon became an expert.

MP calls for Jezza Clarkson's head

Jonathan Schofield

Let's ban all humour

This is in a different league to the Ross / Brand affair, and Mr Mole is on a publicity kick looking for a bandwagon to leap on.

May we should just ban all humour and comedy and allow our MPs to amuse us instead

Password pants-off at Lloyds Bank

Jonathan Schofield
Thumb Up

They can see your password

My Lloyds card was swindled to the tune of several thousand pounds and as a consequense had to change my password from my mother maiden name to something else. Now when you ring up they ask for the password with the hint - "it may be your mothers maiden name". The first time this happened after the swindle I had forgotten what the password was and the lady at the other end helpfully reminded me!

Road Pricing 2.0 is two years away

Jonathan Schofield

Its all about money....

This is driven by the two overriding objectives of this Government: Control and Money.

When almost 1/3 of the population derives ALL their money from the Government than the desire for more cash is inexhaustible.

Water?

I agree with Michael, in that nuclear is the only sensible option, but I think we have left it too late......

I have read that hydrogen is a possible answer, but I gave up on chemistry when the teacher could not adequately explain why water doesn't burn. It's made of hydrogen and oxygen, how explosive can you get?

A neat succinct sum up of the way Nu Labour have stuffed us all. We are sleepwalking into an Orwellian nightmare...

El Reg nails Street View spycars to Google Maps

Jonathan Schofield

Also in Leeds last week

I also saw it in Leeds going up Scotthall Road towards Harrogate. I successfully cut it up with a natty overtaking manoeuvre near the two way speed camera.

Does this mean that I can be googled?

HMRC pays criminal for 'tax dodger' discs

Jonathan Schofield
Pirate

They need the cash

The relationship between the taxpayer and the Inland Revenue (as was) has changed over the last ten years. They are instructed by their political masters to accrue as much as possible by fair means or foul so as to pay for the massive overspending that this government has committed us to.

We're off to hell in a handcart.........

IT contractors cry foul over HMRC income splitting law

Jonathan Schofield
Thumb Down

Don't complain, Darling needs the money.

With a large and growing proportion of the Governments income going towards Civil Service pensions they need every penny they can get.

He may be a little hasty, but he would still get my vote.

I could still find her attractive even with such little cash left!! Might have to move on when that's gone though.

Drivers on the phone face the slammer

Jonathan Schofield

Mental capacity?

It may be the law, but I am of the opinion that if you don't have the mental capacity to both use a phone and drive a car, then you shouldn't be doing either.

Virgin Media network collapses nationwide

Jonathan Schofield

Get a decent provider!

Ah the joys of Metronet, reliable service, no contract, static IP..... £13 per month

Only downside is that I am at the end of the line, 1/2 MB is the best I can do....

Offender tracking database could be binned

Jonathan Schofield

How Much?

That's around £11,800 per offender. They could almost have a full time probation officer EACH for that.

Truly the lunatics have taken over the asylum.

Scotland ranked 'worst small country'

Reduced Pension liabilities

I should think that big business will clamour to get to Scotland with the reduced pension liabilities that this report highlights!
