Comcast expands public Wi-Fi net using customers' modems

bumpy
WTF?

This can't end well

This could only work if:

1) You are given a way to opt out so sharing does not impact your performance.

2) Comcast provides a clear audit trail over who using your access point downloaded kiddie porn.

3) Even if (2), Comcast needs to indemnify you so you are in no danger of being prosecuted for any misuse of "your" connection.

I have avoided Comcast to date due to their one-sided terms of service and this does not help.

Good old days

To me CRT to LCD is like Vinyl to CD - it just seems warmer and more lifelike.

Beer bashers

OK, I'll fall for the bait and step up to defend "American beer" (a sweeping generalization). Yes you'll find watery crap going by that name but we also have 1,000's of excellent beers. If you visit the U.S. just ask around a bit!

AT&T hits back: 'T-Mobile USA merger will be great, actually'

bumpy
Mushroom

Put up or shut up.

OK, let the merger happen - if they DON'T add all the jobs they are talking about, and if their network quality continues to suck, and they continue to have lousy support, then make them spin T-Mobile off again.

High tech help

Sounds like a high tech version of what you can find in the big home stores - a switch activated flashing red light to request help from the elusive orange-aproned clerk.

Larger Kindle Fire coming soon, say moles

bumpy

Fire OK with me

I reviewed the feature set of the Fire carefully before buying and it is meeting my expectations. No, it's not the same as a full featured tablet but THAT IS NOT ITS INTENT! Yes, after using it there are things about the interface that are annoying (a "carousel" is cute but not the fastest way to locate content) but I suspect there may be changes coming. Just a guess - I have no moles in Amazon.

16.5 inches

Japan does not seem to have as many "wide" people as some countries (*cough* USA *cough*) and ANA may be expecting most of their passengers to be domestic. I think a more typical coach seat width is 17" That half inch might be just the difference...

Starbucks extends gratis Wi-Fi to UK

bumpy
Flame

Why all the hate?

Starbucks may not have coffee beans run through a civet cat, but here in the U.S. most of them offer a wide selection of beans and many have single cup brewing systems that yield a fine cup of coffee. Their staff are uniformly friendly (as required by policy) unlike some of the small coffee shops with their snooty hipsters pulling the shots, and equally hip clientele hunched over their Macbooks with ironic stickers plastered on the lid, using the local Wi-Fi which requires a WEP key that represents an inside joke.

Special training for the bush rats (firearms etc) could help ensure success.

Before the PC: IBM invents virtualisation

bumpy

Semi-virtual

I remember working on a VM/370 system. I was testing an MVS/370 virtual machine during business hours and used an VM command in the wrong way - the production VM just froze- much rumbling was heard from the console room. I quietly quiesced my test system and all was well. Good times. Nice to be able to test your new sysres volume during the day (when done correctly!)

Microsoft plans to open 75 retail stores in US

bumpy

What's in the shop?

There's a Microsoft retail store in a mall near me (and not too many miles from 1 Microsoft Way itself). Just a few doors down from the Apple store. Pure coincidence, I'm sure! The MS store has quite a variety of things for sale - MS software, Windows phones, XBox hardware and games, desktops and laptops (mainly Dell), and MS schwag (stress ball anyone?). When I last popped in it was just as busy as the Apple store. They look similar, but not the same. Lots of black&white and metal in the Apple store, lots of glass and primary colors in the MS store. I'm guessing some of the stores will do well, but they certainly have a long row to hoe.

Booze for wrinklies: Good or bad?

Your mileage may vary

One of my grandfathers never touched alcohol, and lived to 94. The other enjoyed cocktails regularly and lived to 95. There are too many factors that determine our lifespan to get all nanny-ish about any one thing.

Dolphin Browser HD

Annoying

I tried it, but every time I load it it asks me to re-accept the license agreement. AND fails to retain my home page. Other than that, a nice browser but not my primary one.
