Don´t let facts...
...stand in the way of a good story.
Ron Fidler, the guy at Knight Ridder behind this, actually had prototypes made. Not mock ups. Prototypes.
There is a huge difference.

"Ok, a more accurate picture for the iPad side would have simply have been a blank space before the iPad as there weren't any iPad clones (modern tablet computers as you call them) before the iPad. Just heavy, slow flattened PCs that consumers weren't interested in.
And yes, android was built from day one to use a touchscreen, because it's was built as a copy of iOS. even then, it wasn't designed for tablets and there are still iPad clones out there being released with non tablet versions of Android for unwary consumers to buy thinking they're getting a cheap iPad."
Wow. I mean wow. Like really, wow.
I´ve not read anything as surreal as that in quite a while. The last line is simply breathtaking for its, well, craziness.
One of things about this that I find worrying is that it is politicans who demanded Magistrates ramp up penalties, in a fairly quick manner. Justice Clerks in Magistrates Courts have been advising Magistrates to disregard usual sentencing guidelines, resulting in more cases going to Crown Court, as Magistrates have a quite limited arsenal of sentencing powers. So, who specifically advises these Justice Clerks? There needs be absolute transparancy over this, or we´re no better than some of the dodgy regimes we constantly harp on about.
Many Magistrates are already suggesting that quite a few of these sentences could be overturned quite easily upon appeal. Both of these numpties are already planning to appeal.
Personally, I do think these idiots deserve their sentences. But giving looters/rioters six months (guilty plea) by comparison is simply bonkers, by comparison.
As for comments about only liberal lefties being concerned about this, I think many people of all persuasions are slighlty unnerved by this.
The application of the law needs to be consistent and this simply isn´t consistent.
A friend of mine, a publisher, had his page modified to say he had died. Being upset about this, I rang him to ask him about his death and how it would affect his short-term plans and whether we were still on for a beer on Friday.
Despite not being dead, the numpties at Wikipedia initially refused to change it, citing "notability concerns". After a whole raft of emails, which have been become legendary in our circle, as well as pictures of him with that days Evening Standard etc., they relented.
You can´t make this shit up.
At least it´s not as bad as the coverage on La Sexta, in Spain. They cut to adverts every 15mins and reduce the main picture to a small subframe. Worst bit, the cycle of ads, is exactly the same on every break. Frikkin´ Groundhog day or whaaaaaaaaaaat.
They typically cut to an ad in the seconds before a race and have actually missed the start of at least three races this season. Even missed the restart of Monaco. Un-fucking-believably piss poor.
Sky isn´t all bad by comparison. With the sound down, naturally.
Still, you´ve got Eddy Jordan, so it all balances out, I guess...
...Somewhere near Nottingham, off M1, if memory serves. Big brown sign, with a picture of rocket that looks like it was ripped off from a Tintin comic...
re first post. Stop being a numpty and overinflating your sense of importance. As others have pointed out, a Gmail account can actually be quite beneficial. I´ve been a user since first launch and get no spam. Repeat no spam. Nada. Niente.
My old BT account (since 1998) gets swamped everyday. Practically unusable, because of sheer volume of shite.
So chill out, learn how to actually use your device in a manner most suitable to your overt paranoia (disable sync, turn off location sharing etc.) and enjoy the app.
I installed it and decided to click on Bread. Rather than show me recipes for bread, I had to select Grain as a second option. Finally selected Any for cooking time and got a wadge of recipes. OKish, but clumsy.
So, rather than select bread and get a list or next level of filters, I have to tell it that I want bread recipes made with grain and not beef or pork or legumes (FFS!), although steak sandwich with onions on ciabatta is the dogs and a good bacon sarnie is, well simply, orgasmic.
The Spinny interface doofer, whilst having its merits, doesn´t work for all occassions and makes the app a little infuriating after a short period. Why would you want to search for a beverage made with chicken or a dessert made with pork?
Odd UI and American-centric recipes. Force Close twice on Galaxy S in 5 mins. Uninstalled.
Shame, as I love to cook and like to try different things out.
@AC whatthefuckshouldimakefordinner.com - most excellent!
They are not buying the company per se, but buying its portfolio of patents in a fire sale. There is a big difference between the two. Buy the company and acquire all the debt/obligations etc. Buy their junk and well, you´ve got a pile of junk, not the legal entity that was previously Nortel.
Except it´s not junk, hence Microsoft and everyone up in arms because, er, Google have got there first. There will be some seriously hardcore patents in there, which is why all the others are miffed...
mmm... It sounds a very impressive machine, but there is definitely something retro about it´s look. Casio sums it up. Guess I´m shallow like that...
Whilst I really like the idea of large form slabs, the convergence with keyboard and mouse isn´t quite there yet and begs the question, why not just get a wee lappy/tabby instead. I use a Galaxy S and a HP Tablet and think there is merit in both, but neither device has enough of the magic stuff that makes me want to completely ditch one of the other. Tis a reet bugger sometimes.
I really want this sort of tech to work and get a foothold, but with manufacturers vomitting products at us with alarming speed, it´s all feels like landgrab/goldrush and needs to settle down.
Nice review, BTW...
Mines the coat, overly stuffed and bulging with doubled up tech...
"There is a risk that the working processes in the dispatch or call taking functions of the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) do not align with those required by Command Point, causing a delay to the date of Go Live, causing a cost and time overrun."
In other words, "it might not frikkin work and it´ll all go titsup".
I now remember why I quit working for big consultancies. It´s all about Wank Word Bingo (Google it . nice little PDF - used to make meetings fun).
Grrr
As a suggestion and given the almost daily reporting of this sort of tomfoolery, why not simply create a boilerplate doc for this...
"It has been reported today that [Insert Corporation] recently sufferred a serious hack that allowed miscreants to make off with [Insert scarily large number] of customers account details. A spokesperson for [Corporation] said "Whilst customers data has been compromised, it poses no real threat to their [Select from Bank Account/Email Account/Credit Card/Gaming Account] and this in no way diminishes our [loveliness/credibility/share price]...."
Failing that, why bother with all that guff. Simply provide us with a simple RSS feed that lists the company names and nothing further...
Citibank
Sony
Gawker
etc.
Would save you guys have to come up with a bunch of clart everytime.
Do I win a pint for saving you oodles of time?
To get to the Comments on dearest El Reg, I have to zoom in, and click on the link. On the standard view, it simply can´t handle/thumb it.
I was an early adopter of both Palm´s and IPAQ´s and had quite a few tablet PC´s, which were OK to a point.
Whilst I like my Galaxy-S, it is not a replacement for my PC or lappy. It´s just another tool in my collection and not a replacement for all the other tools.
Talking of tools, it´s time this one went for a beer.
pip pip
...As someone who does a lot of sailing as well as climbing geet big hills (the one I can see out the window is 11,400ft), it is pretty damn important to understand what the weather is doing now and what it is forecasted to do at various stages throughout the day. It might be sunny where you are, a few kilometers might be quite different. Local can mean a big difference where I live, especially when you throw verticality into the mix.
For example, the weather here today (3,000ft where I live) is stormy and very wet. Above 5,000ft this means snow and pretty nasty conditions. Down on the coast, the wind will be mild, two miles of the coast it will be a different kettle of bananas altogether.
My weather apps, with radar images/animations etc are extremely useful and something I use frequently for planning my misadventures, alongside the usual cockerel blood and unicorn tears...
Quite a few boaties are moving over to diesel-Electric, with solar backup, with small diesel charging battery bank and electric motor driving propeller. However, current deployed panels are about 26% efficient, which is a bit shit. I' ve installed solar panels and wind turbine on my boat, with wind being far more efficient. Wind works a treat, but solar can barely charge handheld vhf, unless I'm very, very patient.
Still, boat is in Newcastle and I'm in Spain, so would get better results if I grow some and have a go at Biscay...
Ps, me and a mate are building a solar cooker and are planning a solar kiln are some stage. Google Scheffler + solar. Guy is a genius in all things solar.
Pirate, obviously...
Unlike a lot of Samsung software, Allshare isn't as shit as you'd think. I use it on Galaxy S to stream/access media clart, without the usual associated nosebleed-moments.
Scary isn't it.....
Ps why are there no cursors on the keyboard of G S? Frikkin' pain the arse, even if you're not fat-fingered... Grr
Like many others, I´ve been using this for a while now on Galaxy S.
I live/work in the Sierra Nevada and do lots of trekking/climbing/falling in the mountains. What´s useful is that you can load the GPX files onto Garmin´s Basecamp or Mapsource software (both free) and do funky stuff with them (annotate, add pikkies etc.). I use a proper GPS when in the mountains and can transfer the data to Mapsource, Googlemaps/Earth as well as my minature fondleslab. The latest version of Android Googlemap gives a terrain-view, so you can sit in the bar and review/plan your misadventures in 3D.
Additionally, you can, if you´re a nerdy-outdoorsy type, go to Wikiloc (www.wikiloc.com) and download other tracks/routes or upload your own. This site is a goldmine for all that sort of stuff.
"(Humphrey) Davy settled on aluminum by the time he published his 1812 book Chemical Philosophy: "This substance appears to contain a peculiar metal, but as yet Aluminum has not been obtained in a perfectly free state, though alloys of it with other metalline substances have been procured sufficiently distinct to indicate the probable nature of alumina."

Last time I checked, he was British...
Do you remeber when Netware was a networking client that shipped (5.25´ disc) with Microdyne(?) 10 base-T network card? My memory is about cloudy on the detail, but think it was some kind of peer to peer doofer, but did the job efficiently. Less tears than IBM´s Token Ring (shudder)...
Or running Compsurf on 200Mb drive on Netware 2.x - could take 20 hours to do its biz....
Aaah, the joys of Netware. Still, as many here have said, it was, if done right, a proper "fire and forget" server install.
RIP Novell
Let us not forget that Jobs and Wozniak toured Xerox´s Palo Alto research institute back in the day, when Xerox had the whole WIMP (Windows, Icons, Mouse and Pointers) malarkey nailed down. Sadly Xerox didn´t realise what they had (just like Postscript) and by some strange *fluke* they "came up" with the Mac...
Typical Jobsian hypocrisy.
Rip off other peoples ideas, make them your own and do some Stalinesque rewriting of history...
Flame on Fanbois....
Will you numpties stop whining like a couple of schoolgirls arguing over Justin Trousersnake vs. Justin Bieber.
I´m trying to enjoy a beer, work on my tan and plan tomorrows trekking here in the Sierra Nevada and the pair of you are simply spoiling what WAS a fun afternoon, reading some of the canny banter on dearest El Reg.
Shame on you both. Go stand in the corner and woe betide you if I hear another peep out of either of you...
grrr
My first job (week before 16th birthday, Top Man tie etc) was converting an Aussie accounting program (basic) into being UK compliant. The Osborne was my putah! It was an absolute joy to use. Used to use Wordstar as editor - remember that beauty?
There was also another similar box, might have been a Hyperion? PC AT compatible with ´orrible orange screen. Felt like it was made out of spare bits of the Forth Railway bridge...
God, makes me feel like a wrinkly
How can you agree 300% ? Strictly speaking you either agree or disagree. Percentages don´t come into it. Is that 115% clear?
What would give congress the right to shut down these businesses? Microsoft has never been "broken up" in the same way the baby Bells where, so all in all, what a strange post.
