James Cameron back from dive to world's deepest point

James 36

blah title blah

I won't get back the minutes of my life wasted watching Avatar and Titanic , both films are unutterable bad (IMHO natch !) and yes I agree he has made some good stuff in the past but I always like rich people behaving like Howard Hughes.

If Paul Allen and James Cameron can help us explore new things by using their own money then good on 'em , probably isn't their own money seeing as the trip was sponsored, but more of Bilionaires spending money of stuff us mere mortals can only dream of, I mean what other point is there to being that minted

Is private cloud the next step for the data centre?

James 36

blah

There are two issues for me (these are strictly my opinion and not to be taken as fact !)

1) security is still in its infancy regarding private clouds

2) pricing models for creating cloud is a nightmare , I have been down the road a couple of times from the provider side and it either requires a large investment or a willing rich customer

Apple lands slide-to-unlock patent blow on Motorola

FFS

this shit just makes me angry !

the US patent system is clearly broken ,

UK one probably is too

though it is amusing you can buy a patent and retrospectively sue for damages (IANAL so sue may not be the right term)

New sat data shows Himalayan glaciers hardly melting at all

disaster discovered by research, disaster averted by more research

“If we could understand the physics more completely and perfect numerical models to simulate all of the processes controlling sea level - especially glacier and ice sheet changes - we would have a much better means to make predictions. But we are not quite there yet.”

so more research into this sea level thing required, too early to draw conclusion, more science and less interesting headlines and based on the success criteria of the quote, the answer may not be known in the next 50 years (which is the standard measurement for when flying cars will be available IIRC)

american tech company ties another american tech company up in court over pointless patent battle even though they have both made tons of cash out of the market over which they are fighting

Plan hatched to view Milky Way's black hole heart

messy eater

I always get confused at this point,

I thought that as light couldn't escape a black hole then nothing can

so how come it chucks load of stuff around the galaxy if nothing can escape it or is the first statement an oversimplification which has left me confused

Vint Cerf: 'The internet is not a human right'

James 36

@walandscott

Driving is not a human right, this is the right to which I believe you refer

Article 13.

(1) Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state.

(2) Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.

LHC results may solve riddle of how universe can exist

James 36

obligatory Hithchikers quote

There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

Where am I going tomorrow? My electric car charger wants to know

James 36
Alert

what's in a title

won't the economics of battery powered cars fail once everyone has one ? The cost of electricity will go up as it will become a scarcer resource, and the cost of fuel will also go up as it will be required to generate more electricity for the cars. Doesn't this mean that transport costs will go up no matter what ? Doesn't that also mean that the cost of everything will also go up ?

I dunno I have probably missed something,

High-frequency traders attract regulator’s interest

James 36

"some people argue it makes the market more stable - others than it makes it more jittery - they can't both be right"

therin lies the problem with economics, it is bloody complicated and ends up being about people which are notoriously hard to predict.

"The more complicated an economic system is the closer it is to failure" i cannot remember where that was from but I likes it

Stop sexing up IT and give Civil Servants Macs, says gov tech boss

PGP CAPS approval

http://www.cesg.gov.uk/find_a/caps/index.cfm?menuSelected=11&displayPage=1111&id=139

As clearly stated in the above link the only OS's that have CAPS approval for baseline are Windows OS variants . Mac is not mentioned on the CESG website which supercedes any BS you have been spun by the manufacturer. As long as your accreditor is aware it will be fine though as he/she may have accepted the risk based on its approval for Windows.
