Oxymoron!

UK's antitrust watchdog is very angry and has written a letter telling Apple and Google how angry it is with them

WTF?

Re: I kind of stopped reading...

I'm Sorry! Somebody misunderstanding a point is kind'a human. Somebody who admits they couldn't be arsed to read the last bit of a short article, but whines that thay might have missed something, deserves some snarking! For god's sake, would have been easier to read the reast than write the comment!

Unless of course I take the view that so much of the world "wants to be spoon fed everything", rather than put any effort in at all! in understanding something properly! Oh! wait I doo! Okay! Hobby horse "No X" has had it's unexpected early morning gallop, back to the stable for breakfast!

Is it decadent that I use four different computers each day, at different times?

Re: Splunk's advice for those hoping to avoid the attack is simple

I read the Reg to keep myself educated, updated, amused and sometimes! frankly horrified & incedulous at the state of the computer networks most of the world have come to rely on (me included re: banking shopping etc!) This particular report has prompted a rare reply simply because I could not initially credit that any "cloud" system would not immediately see and flag/stop any brute force password attack within "it's own system"

Then I got to "mikepren" reply that there is such a system in place called GuardDuty, so went toff to read how that works and yes seems very good, however its an extra!

So I realise that in near everything I read on here, money (or lack of!) is the cause of so many of the gaffes, BUT the vendors have some responsiibility! otherwise we would have car makers saying it has "Some braking" but if you really want it to "Stop" you will have to pay extra!

So I am left shaking my head in dismay & agree (if it at all possible) go with "Howard Sway" comment "Oh, and don't use a cloud service provider, who can't notice and quickly stop something as basic as an attempt at a brute force password attack." As in a provider who has a "Mandatory" Security checking system in place, not just one who obviously does not give a damm! other than of course to see another source of income!

Re: On a similar subject, and it is sad to have to say but necessary to have it said ...

So it's dark and frosty outside, it's Christmas Eve (yeah!) And now I know what " Haikus" means/is! Gotta love a forum that you can learn something new from, that had nothing to do with the original subject! Happy Days..☺️ (Oh... and whilst Christmas Eve, a Merry Christmas to all, -if that's not to off topic either? LOL

Re: One day, not to far in the future,

Yes, in the "old days" of 30+ yrs ago, I acquired a Vic 20 and taught myself 6502 assembly programming (Ah.. happy days!) during which I acquired a word processing program called (if memory serves) Tempest. It was written using an assembler and was so blisteringly (unbelievably at the time!) fast it could scroll 100+ page of a text doc, faster than you could possibly read the screen.

I do often think of it when using various "high power" machines over the intervening years, whilst "waiting!" for something process. Given the near astronomical processing power differences between then and now, I still doo - sadly! :-) - expect every keypress to be instantaneous
