Re: Why - Oh Why waste so much money when Open Office & LibreOffice are free?
Actually, MS office has taken the hint somewhat that their new file formats are an affront to common decency, and have added rather robust ODF support in Office 2010 onwards. (2007 got an update that added ODF support too)

No SD card slot? Eh..
I'm none too bothered with the lack of an SD card slot on my Desire. I always mount my card onto my PC using the phone itself because taking it out means turning the phone off, and those silly little things are just begging to be eaten up by the dog the moment it slips out of my hand. So long as I can mount the thing as a regular disk drive with a usb cable, I'm golden.
The lack of removable battery however, is a more regrettable loss as it will make hard resetting the device quite a bit harder. I understand why they did this though, (battery cases take up lots of space) and I'm sure HTC have a workaround in place for tinkerers.

Re: yep
Resolution is down? I might be wrong on this, but I think this is HTC's first phone with a 720p screen resolution. Also, HTC admitted that their old 'we will build and they will buy' policy wasn't doing them any favours, so they're only releasing 3 phones this year. The X, a similar dual core job, and what looks to be an upgraded HTC legend. Looks like a decent range to me, abliet a little uninspired.

Re: No change at Nintendo
"All their consoles have been less advanced than their competition since the days of the N64 (and maybe before, I wasn't really paying attention)."
No, you haven't been paying attention. It shows. In terms of raw grunt, the N64 surpassed the ps1, though it fell flat with storage and v-ram. The Gamecube however, matched the PS2 perfectly, and surpassed it with better shader technology than it's rival. That's why the Gamecube was always flooded with Survival Horror games, because of it's ability to produce more realistic fog and whatnot.

Apple lands slide-to-unlock patent blow on Motorola

Really?
This is just getting silly. Motorola / Apple / Samsung / etc need to stop these pointless patent disputes and just agree that some things are just an industry standard. Goodness knows where we'd be now if some bored patent lawyer in the 80's decided to patent drop down menus or shortcut icons.

Facebook, MySpace, Twitter expose Google's 'evil'
So, let me get this straight..
Other networks are blaming Google for launching a service that lets people search Google+? If this new search included Twitter and Facebook and pushed them down in favour of G+ then sure, but from what I understand, this is a service for just Google+ users. People do like to jump on Google for breaking their motto for the silliest of reasons...

Very impressive service from what I've seen, even in early days like this. Bought Batman AC during the black Friday £1 sale, and today downloaded the android app (which is exactly the same as the PC/Console version) along with my free copy of Lego Batman, and was bowled over by the service both times. I expect very very big things from this service in the future.

"Every single review seems to comment that they hate Sense"
Not from the reviews I've seen. Though it's still quite chunky, Sense hasn't slowed down handsets since the HTC Hero days. From my experience, and from every review I've seen (including el reg), the sense UI is brilliant. Sense adds some much needed polish to the quite ugly Android UI, and adds features to android that have only just been added to stock (facebook/twitter integration into contacts manager, for example)

I bought the Desire mainly because I wanted to avoid this 'lol not enough memory' nonsense in the first place. I wouldn't be surprised if XDA have a working gingersense rom out by the end of the week anyway. If not, I'm sure CyanogenMOD will fill my needs when froyo comes to the end of it's life.
iOS 5 said to sport over-the-air update facility

Welcome to 2009, Apple.
It wouldn't be the first time Apple have pushed out a standard feature as something 'new'. A welcome break away from iTunes though. All Apple needs to do now is re-brand the Mac App store as the Apple App store, and shift iOS apps onto that platrform, which makes much more sense.
