Re: Could be worse

Had a v. expensive book bought for me for a present (so I wasn't expecting it) - sent from Amazon - RM put it by the back door on a windy autumn day and thus it got covered in leaves! I found it 2 months later (ok - i should have dealt with the leaves sooner). Wasn't in the best of nick by then...

"some kind of tank programme that looked a bit like Lander"

That'd be 'Conqueror' - brilliant game. Great fun shooting at the other tanks and buildings...

Ten... freeware gems for new PCs

I downloaded a number of Stardock widgets including Fence and a number of other windows customising utilities (allowed me to alter all the system icons and themes etc.) I paid for a years worth of updates. I then reinstalled my machine sometime after the year was up, and lo and behold - because stardock utilised a downloader for all its software - this downloader was the only installer I had for it all. So I reinstalled the downloader - signed in - and it wouldn't let me download and install any of the software I had previously paid for as my year was up and I no longer had access to their software updates...

I must say I never contacted them about this - I wasn't overly bothered TBH - only lost about 40 quids worth of software. But it has made me wary of being forced to use a downloader for software which I have paid for. Maybe all I needed to do was find where the original downloader had plonked the installers on my drive before wiping my system - but it wasn't something I had thought of at the time and I thought I'd at least still be able to re-download all my previous purchases... If I pay for software - I want to manually download each installer so I can manage my own backing up of them - and not rely on a downloader which will lock me out after a set period of time.

Thumb Up

I like the current banner on the savethehobbit facebook page! :o) Can't see it helping their cause much - but the sentiment is awesome!

Last time I went there was about 15 years ago. Was a good pub then tho. I struggle to see how a pub that has been trading for 20 years can be infringing or damaging the rights of a company that owns film rights for the book the pubs name is based on (and a few other things)... Surely the Tolkien foundation if anyone should be more aggrieved (and they've not said much).

It's not just a coincidence the timing of this action with the release of the film due in the next year or so...

Hmmm... I'm struggling to see how the online multiplayer is going to work... They'll be more camerapeople running around than soldiers.

Mine's ok

I must be one of the lucky ones - mine works seamlessly with iplayer. In fact recently the menu lag has all but disappeared. A few months back I'd have to wait 10 seconds for a menu to update, but now it's nearer 2... Ethernet cable connected direct to my router (through a network switch).

i feel your pain

My old ok vm router (netgear) bust a few weeks back (everything it downloaded was corrupt), so I got them to send a replacement. A really cheap looking DLink arrived (admittedly very quickly). Since I've had this - I've experienced very similar problems to you. I don't do much gaming anymore - but I can't count how many times it's needed rebooting due to the delay between clicking on a website and it showing up on screen getting often upwards of 20secs. Switch off router - switch back on - everythings hunky dory again for maybe an hour or so...

Think I'll be investing in a better router - any suggestions as to which?

I thought this

and cursed thinking I'd need to change all my passwords - but then checked my old emails (which I never delete - a bit lazy i know) and when you sign up (certainly for the forum) you get an email stating the temporary password. If you then changed this at any point - you got another email telling you what you changed it too...

Unhappy

required title.

Thankfully I only signed up to use their forum and used a pretty weak password that I don't use anywhere else on the net... So I take it other than receiving a possible deluge of spam and phishing attempts to my email address - and having my name and possibly gamertag associated with that address - there's not too much for me to worry about...

I await the aforementioned extra spam with glee!

UK cyclists hit by fraud after online purchase at website

The title is required, and must contain letters and/or digits.

I've never heard of the website - but I recently got 2 charges of £15 to O2 charged to my bank account. I have a mobile - but not on O2. Fortunately my bank's fraud trigger worked and prevented the payments going through after checking with me...

I haven't bought anything from this cycle website - so could it be a wider-based issue between several companies on the web? Although I have to say I'm not sure I'd even used the card that was compromised on the web...
