Google to pay laughably minuscule fine over Wi-Fi slurp across US

Re: Consumers have a reasonable expectation of privacy

Let's have a look at some of your FACTS shall we?

Errm, then they should have switched on their Wifi security then...

Yes they should, but hey, not everybody is as uber intelligent as you, clearly. Shock, horror, some people enjoy using the internet and are not technical geniuses. Scratch that, you're a fucking moron for not realising that yourself.

1) It was a unintentional error that ONLY affected unprotected hotspots.

No, it was INTENTIONALLY designed into those cars' software. Whether you believe the company knew or not is another argument but it was put there by an employee of the company, therefore the company is responsible and liable for the actions of that employee.

2) the data was never used, and discarded.

You know this do you? (Tip: you don't) Google were already busted once after they said the data had been deleted yet they'd kept a backup which was uncovered when the right questions were asked.

Yawn

Samsung love to chuck everything out there to see what will stick. Fine if you are a geek who is content with doing their testing for them but I'm staying well clear.

Hey guess what, here's a revolution, neither Google Maps NOR Apple Maps are perfect.

Only one of them has admitted this.

Only one deflects attention by saying "Hey look what this other guy is doing".

Are you really that thick Leach? How can Apple lose 8% when they sold more?

You know damn well that the market is still expanding and like any expanding market there is lots of room for competition, especially where demand cannot be met as the market is expanding so quickly.

Your crud is really tiresome.

The best form of defence...

This 'article' comes across a little like a kid who defends their poor behaviour by pointing out how much worse the behaviour of somebody else supposedly was.

The Surface is ill conceived, barely works without being tethered by cable, be it a hard drive because of storage issues, power because the battery will not last 5 hours or a mouse because nobody sits there working between a keyboard and poking at the screen.

Utterly pointless. Until Microsoft zealots turn on Ballmer nothing will change.

Let's deflect attention with childish sarcastic headlines.

Let's gloss over the fact that Google knowingly wrote code to achieve their end goal by calling it a "cookie slip-up".

The truth of the matter is he liberated the Xerox engineers from their short sighted idiot upper management on the other side of the country by firstly recognising their genius (which the Xerox board never did) and then offering them a job at Apple. I wouldn't call that poaching them since their ideas were rotting in a lab and were never going to see the outside world via Xerox.

The fact that the Xerox board approved Jobs and Apple engineers visits in return for being given the privilege of purchasing Apple stock before their flotation tells you how short sighted they were.

Find an interview with Bob Metcalfe, Larry Tesler, Alan Kay or a multitude of others who worked at PARC what they feel about Apple and Steve Jobs and you'll find a frank, not always flattering but overwhelmingly grateful response to a man.

Putting phones and operating systems aside, I DON'T WANT Google having this amount of knowledge about my activities, movement patterns, buying habits etc.

We've seen how employers are increasingly turning to Facebook etc. and I've reacted by simply not using these services to the degree that I once did. Google is no different. I don't allow any emails to pass through my gmail account now apart from spam. Nothing important.

This desktop OS has underpinnings dating back over 40 years, how on earth can steady, methodical improvements be labelled in this way? Because you think everything is like Windows?

You should know all about systems based on Unix, you base your life on a Penguin-flavoured free-ripoff version of it after all and nobody is complaining that is "just a set of patches". You have no respect for the amount of work put into these things clearly.

Re: @AC: Why Apple and the PRC get all the hate

So Apple pay Foxconn more money for workers. Where do you think that money is going to go?

They've already tried this, twice that I know about, and there is just no way of guaranteeing that any extra contract pay will end up where intended, or at least after the inspectors have audited payroll.

You are closer the mark with the Chinese Government. The UK used to have labour standards like this once and it's only the government that can make a big difference quickly. Can you think of a good reason they may not be so keen to do this though?

So yeah, they wont have to pursue this for much longer. Hopefully.

Google fine-tuning iOS mapping app for Apple submission

messele
Mushroom

Re: Steve Jobs' position would have been...

The new Apple Maps App itself is actually very good - better than anything I've seen elsewhere. It's the dataset that let's it down and I've noticed that it is slowly being fixed, even in my local area some of the submissions I have made have been implemented.

None of these mapping datasets are perfect. Google's data is the best but then they've had the luxury of wardriving everybody's streets for the last five years slurping up every bit of private Wi-Fi data they can, so it bloody-well ought to be comprehensive.

messele
FAIL

Eh?

Why the automatic assumption that Apple will automatically block anything that Google roll out?

- Other Google software has been allowed through.

- Other mapping apps have been allowed though.

This click-bait is growing very old. I am sure most of us are using ad-blockers so just give up on speculation. Let's have some facts...when they happen.

Actually that's crap. They were caught with a copy of all that wardriving Wi-Fi information that they slurped from every one of us after they swore that the data had been destroyed.

That was after lying about "some programmer" putting the software on their wardriving car's computers without it having anything to do with Google as a whole.

Do you people actually believe that Google are giving you all of this stuff for free and they want nothing in return from you? Oh, they are getting lots in return. Lots and lots and lots and they know more about you than you do. As does anybody they care to share that information with.

IP addresses have never been detected / redirected nor have cookie redirects existed.

The only redirect is from apple.co.uk which has only existed a couple of months since they acquired the name.

But like I say, redirects, apology myths. Keep making it up.

That's a bit of a joke. No car has perfect weight distribution, except when it's motionless, driverless and has a certain fuel load in it.

If it can be proven (and this would be a systematic situation) that the software will record erroneous values then this could only ever be permissible as evidence, not proof, and therefore not of a great deal of use for legal purposes.

I think the goalposts as to why this data logging is a bad thing are moving and this far nothing has really stuck for any particularly compelling reason.

Let's not forget that the background logging of which antennae is seeing your IMEI number at any particular time is far more damning as this would be surely more provable since it's an impartial 3rd party (the telco) that logs the info and law enforcement already has access to this data.
