Ubuntu's latest OS not so Gutsy

Sander van Grieken

not so impressed with gutsy

Both my laptop and desktop booted into a black screen after upgrading to 7.10, requiring me to boot in rescue mode and do the proprietary video driver routine. I used framebuffer consoles on both and both ended up with no console at all. the ATI system insisted on running on XGL, which crashed on the restricted-modules provided driver. Of course I could only start to diagnose this after I fixed the console. They run fairly well after this hurdle, but I get a constant 3% cpu use from KDED (for god's sake, is it folding proteins or what?), are occasionally left with a zombie nspluginviewer eating cpu, and I'm occasionally experiencing the slow network problem as well.

Why is Hotmail so bad at spam?

Sander van Grieken

Hotmail is even worse than described

..because they don't just falsely flag legitimate mail as spam, they even 'blackhole' mail! (This means the sender thinks the mail is delivered, while the receiver doesn't even get the mail in the spam folder). This is unforgivable for a company that holds 30%+ of the email market.

Apache packages: creating a support vacuum

Linux Standard Base

The default Apache installation doesn't seem to follow the Linux Standard Base specification for filesystem hierarchy, so why expect distros to adhere to the defaults? There's also no suggested configuration file hierarchy for a virtual host setup. If apache would provide a good default for that it would probably mildly force the various distros to converge on that.
