A gold MacBook with just ONE USB port? Apple, you're DRUNK

Re: 1 USB port? Seriously?

Would it be too mcuh to ask to be able to watch my legally bought DVDs and to look on a big screen at the photos I took with my DSLR?

Both of these must be activities restricted to only the most geeky of power users?

Re: Need a bigger laptop bag

To be fair, it is innovative since nobody else has designed such a thin light laptop yet

Since when dd 'innovation' mean do the same thing again?

People have for years created thinner laptops as the technology becomes available. Using the latest version of someone else's technology is not innovation. The innovation is at Intel, creating a processor efficient enough to avoid the need for active cooling - therefore thinner. No doubt the Surface 4 will use the Broadwell chipset and might be thinner and lighter still - that doesn't mean Microsoft are innovative!

Euro ministers ditch plan to ban roaming charges

Hellcat

Re: Oh well

My roaming in France on 3mobile didn't work. Called their support number from my wife's Voda but no matter how many times I selected the required network it failed to connect. So no calls or data plus nearly an hour of holiday wasted.

The second I drove into Switzerland *BING* text message "Welcome to Switzerland, feel at home with no data charges". Same for Italy and then later Austria. I switched roaming off while driving through Germany and Belgium, and the gremlins must have been evicted by the time I got back to France as it worked perfectly.

For anyone who regularly visits any of the covered countries it's a real plus. I'd go SIM only next time though - they're not the fastest to get updates out to their locked handsets.

Re: I bought one in AU for $39

You bought a handset that has only just been announced for less than the announced cost? That's impressive.

Unless you meant in general, but then I've owned my 1020 for over 18 months and don't see any of the issues you suggest. The browser seems to run at a decent speed, and renders most websites fine in desktop and mobile versions. The couple of radio stations I've tried to stream worked fine, however I prefer to use Tunein to get a standardised experience free from bloat and adverts.

About time

Well, with IPv6 and everything being internet accessible, it's about time the security companies started talking about how we're going to stop a botnet of microwave ovens burning down whole towns. I've seen them sort of questions asked here enough about the internet of things, but very little in the way of answers from the developers and promoters.

Re: Elephant dead?

I'm struggling to find an app with adverts in it. I have a couple which do, but the majority do not. I don't notice the adverts and typically they're not as in your face as my Android, which were often pop-up full screen links just when you're about to click something...

I don't begrudge the developers the ad revenue, and if it's a good app I'll pay the £1 or so for the without advers version.

Re: Think of it another way...

Bit of a bad example. There is huge amounts of cross-engine sharing in the car industry.

Vauxhall (GM) use Fiat derived diesel engines. Suzuki have used Fiat diesels and in return used their small 4x4 platform (Rav4). My old Volvo V40 had a Renault engine, and a colleague's Kia had a Merc.

The main difference is car manufacturers can still stick their own logo on the engine cover, so to the casual observer it's the same brand engine. I can't imagine many people checking under the bonnet of their smartphone to see who's logo is showing.

So this puts more ambulances on the road?

When my young son was hit square in the lower back by a dinghy travelling at high speed causing him significant pain, how rapidly do you think the ambulance got there considering it was in a town centre, an under 10 year old, with a spinal injury, wet and cold, laid on a concrete slipway?

Three hours. We would have been waiting even longer for a paramedic to turn up to let the ambulance driver take him to hospital had we not given them premission to drive him there... slowly.

So permit me to consider this whole situation with some scepticism. It might call up for an ambulance, but there won't be any available.

Wasn't there some panic around the Google email backup streetview cars recording MACs and SSIDs and it being linkable with public IP addresses and MACs meaning public IPs could be easily mapped against a known location, within a WiFi range of around 30 meters? I guess if that's still the case then having a view into a known house would be pretty useful for a would-be burgular.

Not a worry for me though, my WiFi has always been separate to my router so good luck with that one!

Boxing clever? Amazon Fire TV is SO CLOSE to being excellent

Hellcat

If they sell the hardware for almost no profit, why not open up Prime to Chromecast? That's a device already available, with an already wide adoptance, which can be bought from Amazon (I assume Amazon gets a cut of the price), and would make Prime services attractive to those who have a Chromecast, but don't have Prime.

Amazon seem intent on constantly reinventing the wheel, and making it about as hard for themselves to get into the market as possible. Also see the Fire phone... available exclusively on O2 (no thanks).

Re: Specs - blimey

That's part and parcel of the hardware industry. compare power usage for the latest x64 CPUs and they're massively more efficient.

But are they limited by their OS?

If you compare this one with the oldest that will still run iOS8, what can this one do that the older ones cannot? I understand it will probably open apps a bit faster, and framerate in games etc is better, but is it limted to just doing things a bit quicker?

Hellcat

Battery life without the BS?

I've had a quick re-read but still seem to be missing how that reduction in battery size impacts the usable life. Does the new CPU, plus advances generally in power efficiency mean it's not required, or do you get less fondling between trips to the wall wart?

It's one thing to give us lots of benchmarking scores, but to miss off the typical charging cycle times is criminal!

Same old iPad? NO. The new 'soft SIMs' are BIG NEWS

Hellcat

Re: Do iPhones/iPads allow SIM swap without a restart

Not sure if you know this but the Surface RT (and I assume other Win8lets) can do just that with bluetooth switching on the internet sharing and the wireless auto-connecting. Means a 3/4G enabled tablet is pointless when your phone has tethering and unlimited 3/4G data. Just a shame the unlimited data abroad didn't include tethering.

Not sure if Apple/Google have identified that functionality as a desired feature - it wouldn't be hard to implement in a future patch.

Microsoft, Docker bid to bring Linux-y containers to Windows: What YOU need to know

Hellcat

Re: AppV

Damn! That is a scary looking dude! The eyes!

I hope I can explain better with less maketdroid. In our implementation, App-V is not terminal based. It has a couple of back-end servers that manage and serve the packaged applications either as persistent or streamed applications. These run on the client PC but are effectively stand alone as they hold their own copy of the relevant registry keys and dependent applications etc. We use our existing SCCM infrastructure to provide application streaming/download points so remote sites aren't WAN dependent. It's of most benefit to us when we have multiple apps which are dependent on different versions of a service that cannot co-exist on differing versions. e.g. App1 needs Java 1.6 and App2 needs Java 1.7. This is all centrally managed through AD groups.

Is the functionality similar in Docker, even if the management of the apps is different? Interested to hear what it offers and how it's managed.

Hellcat

Re: This all sounds very much like AppV...

Lazy downvoting because I mentioned Microsoft without the obligotory "sucks" after it?

AppV can run local, or stream sandboxed applications which from reading this article sounds just like what Docker does. Perhaps the article needs a bit more beefing up with detail for those of us who haven't embraced *nix yet? Rather than downvoting me, how about you post a comment explaining the difference and benefit(s), and then we can all upvote you?

Hellcat

This all sounds very much like AppV...

...but a Linux version, of which MS has now also got a Windows version?

If so, then everything is really cool until you realise you do want some apps to be able to talk to other apps. So you put in rules allowing certain bubbles to talk to other bubbles. Before you know it you have Microsoft asking if they can take a copy of your config because they've never seen one as complicated - yet working - before.

Virgin Media DOUBLE-PUNCHED by BSkyB AND BT over ad fibs

up-to: the scurge of advertisement.

I've not understood to this day why BT et all are able to advertise their broadband using the up-to slogan. I'd be interested to know how many people are actually limited to the advertised speed and the what is the average. At least Virgin has been decent in that aspect - 62mbps on 60mbps service.

VM bundles however - bad riddence. Dropping TV and phone ASAP. Who needs it when you can get HD freeview, most channels offer online catchup services, and PVRs are getting cheaper with bigger storage.
