Londoners can bonk their way to work without Oyster cards TODAY

David Harris 1

Not for me

I keep my Oyster card (and mainline rail ticket) in a separate holder, easy to get out for the barriers. If it's lost or stolen both can be replaced with a small amount of hassle.

My credit cards and debit cards live in my wallet, kept somewhere deliberately hard to get at because they are more valuable to me and more of a pain if lost or stolen. I do not want to be riffling through my wallet at every ticket gate (as I can only present one card). That feels less secure, and it will slow me (and those behind me) down.

Nor do I want to be waving my phone around at the barrier, for the same reasons.

So I think I'll just thank TfL for this and carry on as I am.

Re: >"when exactly was Bilbo rescued from Wargs by Eagles, after all?"

"Technology trumps magic every time - Sauron and all the orcs/wargs/trolls/balrogs/you-name-its going up against any reasonably competent modern military is going to be over in a few hours at most."

But that's missing Tolkien's point. That's exactly what Saruman does. Then you become Sauron.

Oh no.

Last time they did this (about 3 weeks ago) both our rather elderly Humax PVRs failed to auto retune properly - we kept getting BBC London but with very weak signal (we live about 2 miles from the Beckley (Oxford) transmitter: we can see it at night from down the road). Had to find the right frequency and do a manual tune. So I'm not looking forward to all this again.

If they really have to do this, it should take place once a year on a fixed date.

"when the user isn't reading a message, the "Reply" menu disappears completely."

So you can't reply to a message unless it is open? (If, say, you read it, closed it, and came back later to reply). You have to open it again - extra clicks or taps or whatever?

Why are they so keen on dictating how you will use the service, removing alternative ways to do things?

Just trying to get this clear in my mind

Under the new Metro regime, you go into Metro to start anything - there's no Start menu in the desktop. You can go into Desktop from Metro, but it's just another Metro app. But can run things, as you can now, if they're "on" the desktop.

So there's nothing to stop somebody writing a "Start Menu" app that lives on the desktop and does the job of a Start menu, preventing the need for any contact with metro?

"Microsoft cuts back on Windows keys"

Won't that leave a gap on the keyboard?

Don't want this

Isn't it bad enough that the thieving system regularly pinches money from your Oyster card when the exit swipe fails - and there's no feasible way to reclaim it? I don't want them rooting around (pun intended) in my credit card or bank account.
