Re: Update Hansdets, WTF?

We all know this by now. Till Google takes control of updates, A. Buy a Nexus, and even after, B. Don't access banking online from a mobile device.

Comodo's 'security' kit installed a lame VNC server on PCs on the sly

scudcraft

Very likely not a blunder, but a business plan. Comodo's been sliding bad actors into their products for years.

Samsung sued over 'lackadaisical' Android security updates

scudcraft

Not that simple. You will not get Android updates on an unlocked Nexus if you have an AT&T (for example) SIM in it. That's because the carrier doesn't like costs, like OTA updates.

No, that Linux Keyrings bug isn't in '66 per cent of Android devices'

Re: Wahoo...

There are two issues. One is that most device companies are slow to provide what they need to to service providers. The other is that service providers are even slower to get updates to you.

I bought a factory unlocked N6 three months ago. Put an AT&T SIM in it. No updates. A few days ago I replaced the AT&T SIM with a Google Fi SIM. Instant updates.

Re: UI still needs important work

I still have not yet found an Export Bookmarks utility, and pinned tabs forget who they're supposed to be dancing with (Windows 10). When it's ready for the prom, it'll be my go to.

Re: Would love to try this...

I've been using Vivaldi for months. I have never seen a positive detection. Here's yours: Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted web site, aka "Internet Explorer Memory Corruption Vulnerability,"

PC sales go OFF A CLIFF to under 300 million a year

scudcraft

Nah

Advances in software used to drive new PC sales because your old one couldn't run the new and better stuff without making you want to kill it. Now everyone's developing mobile apps.

Interesting comments here. Google is not a monolithic funded essential utility for which you are billed.

How the FLAC do I tell MP3s from lossless audio?

scudcraft

FLAC is better than mp3 because it sounds better

I use headphones. FLAC sounds better than everything else because it is what it is and not some mathematical equivalent that strips anything out. I can't speak to the Sonos issue, but I can tell you that the musicians I know all prefer FLAC to Apple's supposedly "lossless" format and to all mp3, yes, even at 320k. It just sounds better in ways that are tough to articulate without sounding like a audiophile nutcase. It's more natural sounding. I don't care why and neither do they.

Anti-gay bus baron rages at being stuffed in Google closet

I assess websites for quality according to the criteria that Google uses. The reason that Souter's site has dropped in ranking is because Souter's site is low quality along several dimensions and Google's algos demote it. Google's search results aren't perfect but their crap detector has gotten much better.

Windows 7 service pack to land this month

scudcraft

and the "patches" suck

After the 2/9 upgrade, I got periodic warnings that I have an "unauthorized" copy of Windows and MSE refused to load/run. After wasting hours trying to find a rootkit, I rolled back the 2/9 Windows 7 x64 update and everything's fine.
