UK IT should 'fire men first', says Kate Craig-Wood

IT Angle

What if...

...it just so happens that some of these companies pay salary on a sliding scale based on experience and/or performance? Obviously pay discrepancies based purely on gender are wrong; however, if some men are getting paid more than their female colleagues purely because they're doing a better job, wouldn't it often be better to keep them and safeguard the smooth running of IT systems rather than cutting employment costs and hoping the cheaper employee can handle it?

Kate Craig-Wood needs to think before making blanket statements that don't take into consideration all possible scenarios at different companies.

SMC fan control?

I myself don't have an Air, but I do have a 1st-gen Pro (Core Duo), which as you may know is also prone to getting pretty hot (highest temp recorded so far - 97ºC while encoding video!). I use a little app called SMC fan control (freeware) that allows me to control the speed of the fans manually, so I can increase the speed to full and pre-empt the heat problems before I start loading the CPU with something intensive. I don't know if this app works with the Air, but I assume it would, so any Air users out there still having problems give it a try - it saved my laptop!

I dun made a facebook group to help spread the word

Here it is, should anyone be interested:

Yes, I realise the irony of starting a group on facebook, a site which is notoriously shady in terms of privacy issues etc., but it is a powerful social tool after all. I just hope facebook members glance up from their lame Vampire/Werewolf fight applications long enough to notice something important going on.

Left-handeders finally unlock the closet, researchers find

What's that about musical instruments?

I can safely say that, for the guitar at least, being a lefty can be an advantage. I started playing bass guitar left-handed when I was 13 because I simply assumed that would be best... how wrong I was! My weaker right hand is much more suited to plucking or picking the strings, and my stronger left paw is naturally much faster on the neck.

Strong laptop demand drives Apple US retail share to 13%

Doing very well - however...

So Apple's share in laptops and desktops is rising... clearly the advertising is working. I believe that there's still a lot they could do to increase that share, however. I know I'm far from the first to say it, but Apple really, really should be thinking about making a customisable mid-range desktop with support for a wide range of graphics cards. That way they could really take a massive chunk out of the desktop market and possibly the gamer market too.

There's a lot of people out there who want this, and yes I realise it will mean a lot of extra work software-wise to make OSX compatible with a wider range of hardware, but the payoff, if it's done right, could be absolutely massive.

That was either incredibly stupid, or a rather bizarre poem. Or possibly both.

Oh man...

He actually gets to play his music at work? That's so awesome! Not that I don't because I'm working at a fairly relaxed music tech facility, but still... working the 9 to 5 with your tunes blasting out all the while has got to be a bonus.

Why is Hotmail so bad at spam?

Ben Saxon

Some advice that seems to work...

Make the start of your hotmail address long, and strange. I have been through two hotmail addresses over a period of at least 7 years. The old one had 18 characters and the new one has 22. They both used strange phrases and/or nonsense words, and to date I have not had a single piece of spam delivered to either one. No idea why, but saved me a hell of a lot of grief.

I know, I know, I shouldn't use hotmail in the first place - but I need MSN and now everyone I know uses my MSN email because they know it from there.

The only explanation I can think of for this bizarre claim is that David Tennant does tend to camp it up as the doctor. He's no Tom Baker, that's for sure.

Tough on words, tough on the causes of words

So Channel 4 now seem pretty jumpy on the whole racism thing purely because of the massive backlash and seem to have taken a 'no-risk' stance on this one, despite the fact that it seems pretty clear there was no actual racist intent.

Many people I have met use the word 'nigger' or 'nigga' as an ironic or humourous reference to its use in r'n'b/rap culture, which I can only assume is how this particular victim of modern British pop culture was using it. As a matter of fact, the word was used in such a way in the hilarious 'Nathan Barley', which was broadcast not that long ago on... Channel 4!

Channel 4 are so fantastically inconsistent in their stance on almost everything now, I find it very hard to take anything they do seriously.
