Why the BBC is stuffing free Micro:bit computers into schoolkids' satchels

Thumb Up

I like it,

When I was 10 i was coding my ZX81 followed by my CPC464

they were both limited,

but people with much better understanding and imagination then me were creating games and business apps that it took me years to compete with (the business stuff anyway, never been any good at creating games)

If this is a stepping stone for a few kids to become interested in coding rather than playing then that can only be a good thing.

Aria

Shame about this company, they used to be one of the biggest and best in the Northwest of England.

I've had a trade account with them for over 15 years but over the last 3 or 4 years they have really let the business slip.

The lack of care in the company is evident even in the retail shop.

They have always been a bit iffy on customer service as they traditionally employed tech people rather than sales people, but now they just seem to employ people who will work for the lowest pay.

Aria have been on the slippery slope for a while and it looks like nothing can save them now that Ari has got too big for his boots.

Re: Where's the science?

One day, before there were days, absolutely nothing, located absolutely nowhere,

So where's your Creator in all this?

You have faith that he exists,

I have faith that he doesn't.

Unless he's made of noodles of course.

Re: Surely?

Hmmm, I guess that the amount of stuff sent off earth won't be that much (yet, probably increasing exponentially though)

But if large amounts are hitting earth every year then we are all dooooooomed I tells ya.....

I'm getting out of here on the first available space plane.

Surely?

If people start mining hundreds of tons (or thousands even) of space rock and bringing them to earth that will affect the earths orbit around the sun (Increase earth mass, increase gravitational effect on the sun, drag earth into firey furnace)

how much space gold would that take?

IIRC

I think they are called Guinea Worms, I read about them years ago, they can be as long as your leg and they come out throught the top of your foot, if you pull them to hard they snap and die inside your leg but if you are gentle you can get them out a couple of CM a day (Hence wrapping them round a stick, couple of turns in the morning pulls it out slowly). They are mainly found in poluted water (wells and such like) and once the head comes through your skin they react to water and release eggs which then start the cycle again. fascinating but in the same league as bott fly for me, I remember the article everytime I get an itchy foot!

@ Dave Murray

Thats just a good example of how much you use your PC then. Sure 8m22s is almost certainly a rubbish estimate, but once done the machine won't be useless.

every Computer is basic when box fresh, it's the apps you add that make it more usefull to you as an individual. If it takes you 3 days to reinstall all your apps then you obviously use your PC for lots and lots of things, well done.

As for re-installing updates since RTM, not long on a new OS, if your talking about XP then yeah ages, Vista quite a while, Win 7 not so long. Win 8 probably a couple of mins. Big whoop.

Snowbound Alaskan survives on frozen beer

I Call BS

If the coors had frozen in the cans and he had to dig it out with a knife the inside of the car must have been well below zero.

(Given that the alcohol in the beer will have lowered it's freezing point)

he spent 3 days sat in a below freezing car with minimal insulation ?

The cold would have got him and he'd be dead, much more likely he ran the engine for 3 days with the heater on to keep warm (hence the lack of fuel when found) and he embelished the story with frozen beer and only turning the engine on once a day (even though it was only on for 23 Hours 45 mins)

Missing the point?

Has nobody realised that the security guards were playing back the recording of the fall?

Pedro from housekeeping probably told security about this stupid bint falling into the fountain and then later that day they looked back through the tapes and watched it. they won't have been recording themselves watching a live security feed.

As far as putting it online, there was no real way of identifying her before she came forward so no invasion of privacy.
