Researchers spy on BitTorrent users in real-time

Darkwolf

simple

The reason that the music industry goes after the downloaders, is because they are some of those who are uploading content.

How else you think they get your IP addy or trace you?

THEORETICAL POSSIBILITY

--------1997------

Music CEO: We need to make more money.

Underling: We could start uploading music via torrents for others to download.

CEO: Why would we do that?

Underling: Well, when they download the music, we can obtain their IP address.

CEO: And how does this make us money?

Underling: Our lawyers can then sue the downloaders for "losses". We will make millions.

CEO: Brilliant, thats the best idea I have heard in years. You will rise very far in this company with thinking like that.

---2002----

CEO: That was a great idea you had years ago, we have made a large amount of money over the years. By the way, we need to cut costs, your fired.

Underling : Damn.

---- Early 2011 ---

After many years of research, the original underling now releases his own software for P2P that prevents the music companies from being able to track users, without the need for the users to "hide" via proxies or other methods. Pure protection for users of the software.

He releases this completely free.

--- early 2012---

The music companies finally realize that they have a failed business plan, however as they do not want to change, they instead get involved in politics, making every country mad at every other country.

--- late 2012 --

Due to the music industry medling, all countries launch nukes at the main offices of the different musc companies.

This results in the countries that house such industries to launch back.

The Earth become no longer able to support life.

BOFH: The PFY Chronicles

Darkwolf
Alert

Simon dead??

Say it isn't so.

This must be some previous agreement between the BOFH and the PFY to first milk money from the company for his death (hence the "widow" who may be BOFH in drag), get rid of anyone who knows the BOFH (expect lots of death, especially beancounters) so that the BOFH can be later hired again?

Would not be the first time he faked his own death.

Alternatively the death could be legitimate, as a final retribution by the PFY for years of torment, so that he can become the new BOFH?

Google gets all Minority Report with Street View

Darkwolf

Was only time..

Projects such as street view, while generally provided free, do eventually have to fund themselves and ads on streetview is the next implementation.

Perhaps google should work in someway to block the ads, for those who use street view for other purposes.

I can just imagine a company, such as a cell provider, who integrates streetview into their systems, would want to keep people from seeing ads by other cell providers.

Dell crowned Bad Santa computer maker by angry customers

Darkwolf

Its not just hardware...

In early November I had ordered a restore disk from Dell for a clients computer (he never made one and HD is buggered), and that order kept getting backordered, finally got the disk about a week ago.

In this particular case, the client had paid for the disk, and due to the delay I had to reduce MY charges to the client to keep them happy about not having their computer for nearly 2 months.

Previously whenever I ordered a restore disk, would have it within a week, and was expecting to receive it earlier then I did based on previous experience.

At this time, any clients looking for new computers, I am not recommending Dell, and actually recommending custom built systems built by myself, as you can sometimes get a better system this way for only a slightly larger cost (in some cases less) then you get buying a "off the shelf" system.

DARPA seeks orbital wheely-bin plan

Darkwolf

hmm possible solution

A mid size/large electro magnet, setup in a partially degrading orbit.

First, you put it at the highest orbit you can, allow it to circle, slowely leaving orbit heading to earth.

Along its trip, it collect any metallic objects in orbit.

Then, you either have rockets attached to send it back into a higher orbit for later pickup, or allow it to enter atmosphere to burn up.

sunny vs cloudy

"There, I took over 200 shots to discover how each performs under ideal conditions: a bright, sunny day."

Most photographers I know would consider "ideal conditions" to be a cloudy day, as then you don't get the harsh shadows that a bright sunny day would give.

How bout a comparision between bright and sunny and slightly cloudy?

Comparisions

Sorry for the long post, does el reg have a character limit?

Just did some quick math.. per wikipedia (I know, not reliable source) regular flu has a .02% kill rate, swine flu has a 2% (im averaging its actually higher) .. a worldwide populate of 07/08 at 6,710,926,117 (according to some sources) if everyone got the flu, the total in deaths would be:

Total population: 6,710,926,117

Regular Flu : 1,342,185.2234 potential deaths.*

Swine flu : 134,218,522.34 potential deaths.*

(( *Regular flu deaths is actually much smaller each year, however not everyone gets infected each year, and its fairly easily treatable. The above totals are if the WHOLE population got infected, and there were more limited treatments. ))

and thats if the swine flu doesnt do an antigen shift (which it has a high posibility of doing, higher then regular flu)... which would mean if you survived the initial, you could get it again and die.

Some people have done comparision to the 1918-1919 flu (Spanish flu which was estimated that anywhere from 20 to 100 million died), saying that this could have the same results. The pandemic is estimated to have affected up to one billion people (about 1/2 the worlds population at the time).

One of the biggest debates on this, is that in 1918 - 1919, medical care was not as good as it is.

While this is true, and medical care is much better now, in 1918 - 1919 we also did not have the potential for much larger spread.

With the ability to go 1/2 way around the world in a few hours (instead months at that time), and how crowded airports are these days, the potential for a larger amount of infection is much greater then it was then.

Imagine someone infected, going through a large airport, how many you think are going to infected, who are then going to other busy airports.

Having a stopover between flights, may be hazardous to your health.

However the way that this is going to be turned into a true pandemic and get out of control would be for it to get a stranglehold in a "slum" area, with a few thousand people, who are to poor to get to a doctor or cant afford to miss work, who then spread it out via people going into / out of the "slum" area, infecting an even larger population.

For example, if any area of 100 people get infected, and they pass on to 10 people, you then have 1000 infected who pass it on to 10000 people, and so on so on, before they even realize they are infected.

Also with those who have a "macho" mentality, and pass it off as a regular flu, they will potentially infect a larger number of people, before either deciding to go to hospital or dieing of it.

At this point, organizations like the WHO are probably less conserned with current totals as they are with the POTENTIAL of this virus.

Luckily, I have a homebased job, and don't go around large groups of people, so not to worried.

Yet.

Outlook / outlook express, setup to use IMAP rather then POP will result in emails not being lost if client computer gets virus, as the emails will be saved on the server.

"I would also point out that you can run Windows on a Mac, but NOT vice versa. Is that monopolistic practice?"

You can run a windows on a Mac, but only on newer Macs. (and its not running windows on the mac OS, just running it on the hardware, almost like using dual boot on pc's)

Regarding running Mac on Windows, dont you mean running Mac on a non apple pc?

Which by the way, thats not M$ fault. Thats Apples fault. The OS specifically checks to see if its running on apple hardware.

The one company that was putting out Mac OS on non apple PC's is being sued by apple.

Cease and desist

Turns out, one of them damn IP "companies" (you know, the ones whos only existense is to sue for copyrights) found that they held the copyright on the letter t (but not T) from a screw up at the US patent office.

Cisco was just the first company that they found to be violating their IP and they sent a cease and desist order on the letter t's usage.

Cisco promptly removed all instances of t from their website until such time as they were able to negotiate a licensing agreement.

Keep an eye out for other sites who will the removing all instances of t or replacing t with T.

@ Paul

"If you normally eat a reasonable meal at a restaurant and then one day they offer you an all you can eat deal do you stay there eating constantly till, ala Mr Creosote, you explode?"

Actually, at an all you can eat, I have been known to eat more then I normally would, considering that as I spend about 15+ hours a day at a comp, eating a decent meal is rare.

However, when it comes to internet speeds, currently I have a 16mbps/2mbps connection. On average, I may use only a small percentage of said connection, BUT if im attempting a large transfer between systems, I expect to get my 16mbps connection ( in reality, due to transfer rates between systems, congestion, and other junk, it may be lower, however anything less then 13mbps/1.5mbps and I complain).

I do NOT expect, that the 2 or 3 days a month I actually use the connection to the fullest for a few hours , to suddently find myself stuck at 2mbps the rest of the month.

Now for example, if I had a 150mbps/100mbps connection, if i needed to upload a file, I would expect to get a decent speed as thats what im paying for, so I should get it.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/319044780.png my connection, done at time I was writing this reply, while also connecting to my work. When ive seen it below 13mbps/1.5mbps a quick call to my cable company, and I am usually back up to speed, or in rare cases (about once a year) I get a new modem from them.

Darkwolf

Comcast

I find it funny how comcast complains that they need to manage traffic, and how 5% of their users use 90% (give or take) of their network, however a friend on mine on comcast got a letter, telling how they are going to be offering 150mbps (down) and 100mbps (up) fios connections.

With the caps they are placing on their service, what are they gonna do to users who sign up for this service and then attempt to fully use it? (math may be wrong, but doesnt this mean you would hit the cap in about an hour?)

What happens after a bull fight....

A man goes to Spain and attends a bullfight. Afterwards he goes to a nearby restaurant and orders the specialty of the day. The waiter brings him two very big balls on a huge plate, which the tourist eats with relish.

The next day he goes to the same restaurant again, once again orders the specialty of the day, and he is brought two very big balls on a huge plate. It tastes even more scrumptious.

The third day he does the same and the fourth, but on the fifth day he goes to the restaurant and orders the specialty of the day, and they bring him two very small balls on a big plate. The man asks, "What gives?"

And the waiter says, "Senor, the bullfighter doesn't always win!"

Missouri law, at 210.110.(1) RSMo., defines "abuse" as:

". . . any physical injury, sexual abuse, or emotional abuse inflicted on a child other than by accidental means by those responsible for the child's care, custody, and control, except that discipline including spanking, administered in a reasonable manner, shall not be construed to be abuse.

Darkwolf

simple solution

Simple solution would be to just decide on one, set it as a primary domain, then set all others as parked domains.

This gives you the benefit of being able to use either to locate the site, then in the url it would show .co.uk or .com depending on what the user went to. Of course this means you would need to stop making the links url specific (use /folder/link rather then www.sitename.com/folder/link
