Apple 'gay-cure' app severely slapped

Leona A
Unhappy

This should be a no brainer

Remove the app. Apple should be neutral, as the article states, they would not be allowed to include a Racist related App, so the same should be for this. I'm sure this would be breaking the law in the UK under the new Equalises law.

Fukushima on Thursday: Prospects starting to look good

Alert Level Raised

From BBC News "Japan has raised the level of nuclear alert from four to five on a seven point international scale. " "A spokesman said it was made because of the condition of reactors 1, 2, and 3 at the plant. "The cooling function was lost and the reactor cores were damaged. Radioactive particles continue to be released in the environment," he is quoted by the AFP news agency as saying. " So everything is fine isn't it?

Asus to take fight to tablets with cheap Google netbook

Leona A
Linux

Here we go again.

The 'Small Cheap Computer' never really came to light, the EEE PC 701 Came close, really good effort, but nothing since, the idea showed great promise, but nothing really came of it, I think that what the Industry considers 'Cheap' is different to that of the 'Consumer' sadly, £200 is a lot of money these days, and with things the way they are now, its the choice between, paying bills and necessities and buying a new laptop, if they are going to call it cheap, it really needs to be cheap!

Or here is an idea, just worry about putting out the hardware and let the buyer choose what OS to stick on it, and save a few more £'s?

Wi-Fi security befuddles clueless home users

Idiot proof?

Nothing is Idiot proof, that only proves you've not found the right Idiot yet.

My router came with no security at set up all, good old Virgin Media National! Just sent the box and basically told me to 'get on with it', good thing then that I 'know' how to set it up.

If you 'have' to leave your router 'open' then you could lock it down to each devices MAC address and not broadcast your SSID, disable DHCP and use Static IP's, not ideal but might help.

Most my neighbours seem to be 'clued' up too, their routers are secure, though there is one 'open' one, which I've not been able to connect to, just tried for curiosity, I have and pay for my own internet :)

Paris, well I'm just a girl, what do I know about IT ?

PS3, Xbox 360 pass water on Wii

First for motion control.

Wii was first to do motion control, the games are designed with it in mind. Games really involve the player and its fun. Ok the Wii was my partners choice, I'd have got a PS3 personally, but there you go. As for its graphical output, it can do 480p which I have it doing, on my HD TV.

Its been around now for ages, it seems, its success can not be questioned! :)

Government needs to bring IT skills in-house

Leona A
Flame

Outsourcing is bad

Outsourcing projects is a total nightmare, never get what is required, the out sourced company doesn't understand what is required, the specification is not detailed enough, more time is spent trying to sort problems out, when all is said and done, more time and money is saved by having the IT skills in house, that way the requirements are more clearly understood, the bod programming it knows what the client wants, and is closer to the customer, everyone wins. Only issue is that government do not pay decent IT wages, so be prepared to take a hit there, oh and don't expect job security or indeed any decent pension, that's all been taken away.

'Wrong amount of snow' caused Heathrow chaos

Leona A
Megaphone

UK and snow bad combination.

It wasn't just the air ports struggling, we can not even keep our road and pavements clear in weather like this, so how do you think we are going keep an airport open.

This country just can not cope with extreme weather, our government is short sighted, doesn't take advice from scientists and does not plan ahead, well not longer than term in power!

We have a very good weather service here, 80%+ accuracy, its about them the authorities paid attention to it, and acted upon the information given, the bad weather WAS forecast, they knew it was coming, but still decided to sit on their big fat behinds and do absolutely nothing!

They shouldn't be saying sorry, they should be sacking people, as Scotland quite rightly did!

Neighbourhood watchers in Reading get speedguns

Leona A
Paris Hilton

agree

The speeding thingy always has drivers up in arms, but its really quite simple, a road has a speed limit, your car is fitted with a speedometer, match the value on the speedometer with the speed limit and you don't have a problem, Simplz! Why do drivers find this so difficult?

<< Paris, as I'm sure she's been done for speeding :)

Library e-books to become too tatty to lend

Leona A

How Ridiculous

Profif, Profif, Profif that's all we seem to hear these days, at times when Libraries are closing down because the government is refusing to fund them, surely this is a great way to save money, so if we don't have a library, there will be no one to buy your stupid book in the first place! Move with the times!

Ofcom shows average broadband speeds half advertised rate

Leona A
Unhappy

No surprise there

That really is no shock is it? We all know that what we pay for and what we get are two different things. Unless you are fortunate enough to be on Virgin's Cable network, which I am not, it runs past our home, but they say its too expensive to run a 5 metre cable to our house! :( Hence I'm stuck on their inferior and more costly 8Mb ADSL service of which I see 2Mb of that, tops :'( very unhappy bunny, I email 'Cable my street' weekly, but I think they ignore me now. (I even offered to cover the cost of installation, still no ball!).

Goes to prove, no matter what your disability, you can do anything you put your mind to. He isn't super human, just super determined, there are a lot of 'able bodied' people that could learn at lot from this, rather than sitting around saying 'oh wow is me!'

Good on him, wish him well finding work, sadly there is still a lot of prejudice our there, despite achievements.

Its about time

A spade was called a spade, and the word Unlimited is removed from ALL adverts from companies who Cap their data or service in any way, as its NOT unlimited is it? No, right then, how hard can this be?

The use of the word Unlimited should be banned unless the service truly is, if it isn't, then don't use the word, its really quite Simpliez!

Well sadly I can not see my partner buying me any of those, though I do like the candle and the USB stick ideas. Though I 'am' that one who has the 'Creeky' outdated hi fi tech, including a record player (remember those, when music was music (and not binary code :) )).

It's official: Nokia bets on Microsoft for smartphones

Leona A
Unhappy

No surprise

This is of no surprise really is it? Come on Ex M$ bod joins Nokia, what do you think he's going to do? There is only one thing he knows, people don't like change or stepping out of their comfort zone, so he takes the company in a direct he knows best.

I was so hoping that Nokia would be brave enough to do something different, step outside the box, develop something for the enlightened people of the world, but sadly this is not going to be the case. I probably makes sense to Nokia, make phones for the masses and clones out there, if I wanted to be a clone, I'd have bought an Iphone, I want freedom, expression and the right to do what I want, now there is nothing that embraces that, they say they will develop Meego, but that'll disappear soon for sure, Sad Times :'(

Discovery survives feeler gauge disintegration

Dumbing down

Ya ok, I think we all know what a 'feeler gauge' is thank you, even me! The same tool that is used to check the gap on spark plug electrodes, I was going to say it wasn't 'rocket science' but maybe it is now :) Anyway why such a big deal? What else are you going to use to check gaps accurately? To be fair these are procession tools not just 'thin pieces of metal held together by a screw'.

Nokia Digital Radio Headset DAB

Leona A
FAIL

But why

Is this not integrated into the phone, DAB has been around so long now, but they still put FM radio's in phones, if they want to improve the take up of DAB, then it has to start to be embedded into devices as standard, not an optional extra, who will pay for it? I mean £45! that is how much I paid for my Pure Digital Clock DAB Radio, I do think I would pay that for a phone add on.

Good luck with that,

as developers don't do accessibility on any platform, it cramps their style. As it doesn't affect them, they couldn't get a rats behind.

UK police crime map website: Who's the victim here?

Leona A
Thumb Up

same thing with direct gov if I remember correctly

I can not remember the figures, but at the time the 'govt' took ages and spent millions, going over time and budget on it, whereas a 'bored' student produced a similar site in 2 hours which only cost a packet of biscuits ! :) (bascily just re branded google, but the results where the same :) ), proved a point though.

Home Office crime maps go to street-level detail

Leona A
Thumb Up

Agree

Yep that's the issue for sure, they used all the money to buy a Micro$oft Server which can not handle the traffic, now if they'd used an Linux server it would have been cheaper, more secure and performed better, but government don't do Open Source, they don't trust it, if it doesn't cost > £65k they don't trust it.

Leona A
FAIL

Another great example

Of government attempting to do IT.

It'll be under funded, ill planned, inadequate, old, out of date technology which can not handle the load.

It will not have been thought out, and the whole thing designed by committee.

Lets say I work in such an environment, I know how these things go!

419ers strip lonely heart mum of £80k

Leona A

can't help but

Feel sorry for her, it must have been awful when she realised what had happened.

It isn't only done online, it is done in real life too, have you seen the cases in the news of incidents like this, its sadly not uncommon, but the first time I've seen this type of thing, with a 'gang' doing it.

The word I would like to use for this gang isn't printable, but they are nothing short of weak cowards who only have the ability to pray on the vulnerable.

Everyone is looking for that fairy tail relationship aren't they? We all want love, so what price are you prepared to pay for it, if you think this is what you will get at the end, I can easily see how this happened, I can see how I could have been in a similar situation.

Its so easy to mock and say nasty things, always easy to spot the mistake After it has happened, but just think about it, put yourself in her position for a minute and just think, what would you do, now much would you give for that perfect dream?

Sadly the old saying applies, "if something looks too good to be true, it usually is."

HTC Desire Z Android Qwerty smartphone

Leona A
Boffin

Nice phone

So 4 months after its UK release 'da Reg' gets around to reviewing it.

I have been awaiting the release of this phone since I saw a few 'leaked' pictures of it, way back in the summer.

I have read problems about the hinge, to the extent, that on XDA Dev, there is a forum thread about how to repair it, this does not sound good for build quality or durability, does it?

If you buy a new phone these days, you have to buy it on a 2 year contract, thus, you got to believe that the phone you are going to get, will actually last that long.

I agree 1 days life out of a battery is pathetic, I couldn't be doing with that, my old XDA Stellar (HTC Tytn2) lasts 4 days, on a 2 year old battery, as others have suggested, there are ways of increasing the battery life via apps, shame they don't fit bigger batteries though, maybe after market ones will appear at some point.

I didn't know that HTC had locked down the boot loader, that is not good, but then HTC do send regular updates? Motorola have done the same, though they're update policy seems quite dire by all accounts.

I am undecided on what I am going to replace my ageing Stellar with, has to have a physical keyboard as I can not use on screen keyboards, might wait to see what Nokia come up with, at least you know that those are built to last!

But then,

After reading the full article, one that that upset me was, the security staff where all to happy to laugh, joke and post the video on YouTube, but when her phone got stolen they didn't want to know, refused to help! Begs the question if the staff are Security or just sick Voyeurs?

HTC Gratia comes to UK - three months late

Leona A

Shame

the HTC 7 Pro isn't running Android, or that would have been one for the short list.

On another note, if HTC are bringing phones that 'were' bound for US only over to the UK, could they consider bringing the EVO Shift 4G over too, that looks a nice phone.
