Intel outside: Apple 'prepping' non-Chipzilla Macs by 2020 (stop us if you're having deja vu)

ARM computers were emulating x86 30yrs ago

A virtual machine for intel based software shouldn't be a big deal.

Those of us old enough to have used the ARM based Acorn Archimedes at school or college in the late 80's and early 90s might remember the software based PC Emulator. Which if memory serves me correctly ran software at the same speed an original IBM PC would. Not exactly fast, especially when compared to an AT or 386 PC but pretty good going considering it was done in software.

Re: the post-Brexit relationship

It's easy to find out how that will go : just look at any divorce where the guy walks out on the faithful woman...

You missed the bit about finding exciting new international relationships. Only to find that it's Ursula from the Ukraine or Ting Tong from Thailand who seem interested. Then eventually discovering that they aren't really interested in you and only want to extract as much money from you as they can.

Re: I'll miss them

Some of us old barstewards remember when they were primarily a mail order business, with a few shops in larger cities like London, Manchester, Bristol etc. You'd have to buy a catalogue from WH Smiths but they were pretty good value though.

Unfortunately they basically went and filled the hole left by the closure of Tandy. So their few stores slowly multiplied and changed from a catalogue focused electronics store (more Screwfix than today's Maplin) to a larger version of Tandy (with the same reputation Tandy had for not being cheap).

They were once like that

From my memories of them in the early-mid 90's that was the business model for their stores (certainly in what was my local store at the time). The store was fairly small, some items were on display, but for pretty much everything else you'd go up to the counter screwfix style with your list of XY34Z style catalogue numbers.

I think it was around the late 90's - early 00's that the rot started to set in*. They moved to a larger store display area, they then started opening the 'out of town' stores, increasing the number of stores they have and the rest is history as they say.

* Probably around the time Tandy disappeared, filling the void they left.

What the European Convention on Human Rights actually says

I wonder why don't people bother quoting the 2nd bit of Article 10 of ECHR?

ARTICLE 10

[1] Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. this right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers. This article shall not prevent States from requiring the licensing of broadcasting, television or cinema enterprises.

[2] The exercise of these freedoms, since it carries with it duties and responsibilities, may be subject to such formalities, conditions, restrictions or penalties as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society, in the interests of national security, territorial integrity or public safety, for the prevention of disorder or crime, for the protection of health or morals, for the protection of the reputation or the rights of others, for preventing the disclosure of information received in confidence, or for maintaining the authority and impartiality of the judiciary.

BBC Micro's equipped with a Teletext adapter could actually download programs from Ceefax. IIRC the service ran until the late 80's.

Whilst watching the TV...

Perhaps I'm giving MS too much credit and foresight here.

Whilst watching TV last night I couldn't help but wonder how many modern TVs (and STBs) with HD and/or DVB-C/T/S tuners have some sort of ARM chip in them? Bung a more powerful ARM chip in and you've got a 'lightweight' PC/WebTV with a usable 720/1080p resolution display. Could it be MS are worried some TV company will add networking (for IPTV) and then bung Linux/Android on their TVs to create something that might be a threat to MS?

Yeah... I know I probably am giving them too much credit and they're just panicking about tablet PCs and Android/Linux and punters finding out there are alternatives to MS Office.
