Sony PS3 narrows gap with Nintendo Wii

Tom

Hmm

Surely a more apt headline would be "PS3 sales fall less than Wii sales do".

Bin charging back on as Brown gets dizzy

Tom

Bah

I don't currently recycle and know I should... our house of 4 people produces around 5-6 bags of rubbish per week which is obviously too much but not probably enough to get fined. I think it's a good idea though... fines are a good way to kick people like me into line!

Re: Sky

My dad was in the first wave of Sky broadband and they gave him a router with WPA running and the key for it printed on the box... non-default SSID and no admin password in site... in fact we've been unable to find anywhere the login and password for the router. What is the default login for a Sky router?

Symantec accidentally warns of internet meltdown

Errm

Errm... except it's not like the Defcon scale since the higher the number in Defcon the more peaceful the situation.

"Standard peacetime protocol is DEFCON 5, descending in increasingly severe situations. DEFCON 1 represents expectation of actual imminent attack"

MIT student walks into airport wearing circuit board and wires

Tom

Hmm

I don't see what the problem is here... she wasn't carrying some piece of equipment, she was attempting a bomb threat? I could let off the circuit board but what's the excuse for the fake detonator?

One plug to rule them all

Hmm

Nokia may have switched to their own micro charger plug but they did issue an adapter from old-to-new with every phone!

ICANN dukes it out with the USSR in cold war rematch smackdown

Hmm

Actually, Northern Ireland is part of the island known as Ireland. England, Wales and Scotland reside on the island known as Great Britain. Collectively these two islands form the British Isles. The British Isles is made up of two countries; the Republic of Ireland (which makes up the other 75% of Ireland) and the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland.

Basically, if we used .gb we'd have to give Northern Ireland their own CCTLD...

Mac, Linux BBC iPlayers in the offing, says PM

Tom

Hmm

This is news? The BBC have said from the start that they'll bring along Mac and Linux iPlayers as soon as they can?

Jason Bourne disses James Bond

Tom

Hmm

The irony of this article was that the BBC article was about how Bourne compliments Bond and includes the full quote from Bourne, stating that there is "a place for both" in the modern world.

Halo 3 hits one million pre-orders

Tom

Halo 2 isn't outdated

Sure, Halo 2 came out on the XBox years ago but the PC version isn't just a port; I was under the impression they redid all the graphics as well as some other things?

Cops taser crap-smeared Oz clubber

Re: Improper use

There were better solutions than tasering him. Personally, I'd suggest a set of long sticks to beat him down with.

Doctor Who signs up thinking man's crumpet

Tom

Nah

We really should wait and see how Tate does. I thought she was apalling before but then again Billie Piper was apalling in her first episode... you have to give people time to get used to the character a bit.

RTD is leaving after Series 4 anyway... so I guess you'll all get what you want (the death of Doctor Who again)

First Vista service pack beta for 07

Tom

Not such a bad idea

Making a crappy core that hogs hardware is actually very good for us, the end-user. Hardware speeds and capabilities only really develop around need... Vista will make developers release better hardware sooner and cheaper which we can then get a real advantage out of on Linux!

Kylie comforts the Time Lord

Tom

Re: Jumped The Shark

How can Doctor Who have "jumped the shark" from those things you said?

The new series started off with stunt casting... Billie Piper is a prime example. As it turns out she was an excellent actress, so maybe you should wait before writing off a stunt casting as a bad casting?

And who is it exactly trying to outdo for disasters? Doctor Who has no rival, unless you're somehow counting Eastenders and Corrie as they're the only two programmes that get equivilant viewer levels.

Beeb reveals Kylie as Titanic waitress

Tom

Well, good thing it hasn't

Tate's not in the Crimbo episode...

And Doctor Who isn't and wasn't Science Fiction. Science Fantasy is more apt but still pretty inaccurate... I don't see a whole lot of Science in it.

I prefer "an adventure in time and space (as long as the space is Cardiff or London)"

ISPs face down Tories on file sharing

Tom

There goes the election...

Regardless of the rights or wrongs of this policy, the Tories are going to lose a lot of friends over this... a large proportion of those he's recently managed to persuade that he's green, not blue, in fact.

Torchwood sends inspection team to CERN

Filming

Shouldn't John Barrowman be busy filming Torchwood Series 2? Or maybe he is and this is a filming site!

Or maybe when Captain Jack heard about a huge tunnel and things being fired down it, he just couldn't help but think he was the man for the job?

Sky is 'silly' to whine about HD for All

Tom

Re: Bitter?

Afford the HD TV? Most new TVs come HD. And how are they going to sort it out if Sky own all the dishes, Virgin own all the cable and OFCOM sell off all the spectrum that has previously been used for TV?

Tories offer record industry cash for righteousness

Errm...

What utter crap...

(the Tories, rather, not the author or the commentors!)

Catherine Tate to accompany Doctor Who

Tom

Whatever

I'm a big BSG fan but it had some appalling episodes last season. Doctor Who's main problem is that it doesn't give enough time to each story anymore and BSG's is that it tries to drag far too little story over far too much time, leading to constant filler episodes while you wait for something to actually happen.

I'm against the casting of Tate, as she's talentless, but then again everything said the same about Billie Piper. I know we've had an episode of Tate already and it wasn't great but Billie's first appearance wasn't mind-blowing either.

As for jumping the shark... surely 8 million viewers giving an AI of 88 for the last episode says it all.

And why does everyone say Dobby? He looked quite Dobbyish but he was surely designed as more of a Gollum character? Dobby was an elf, he looked like he did because he was of a different species, Gollum was a hobbit who was given an unnaturally long life but at a high cost. Surely that's more a representation of what the Doctor was meant to be?

Microsoft finds good facts to sell Windows Vista

Tom

Stop whinging

Vista works fine as long as you have decent hardware. If anything, it'll just end bringing lots of fast but cheap hardware which you can use for Linux.

I installed Vista early December on an old PC, it detected all my drivers and worked fine, got a new PC, transferred the disk from old PC to new and it still works fine! Never had it crash, although initially confusing, it is far superior to XP.

The only problem is file transfers have slowed down... hopefully MS will fix this in SP1.

I currently dual-boot Ubuntu and Vista but have to say that I think Vista is slightly better.

No, if you read the article you would have seen that it just means that the telcos can't get a 17.5% reduction off the amount they already paid!
