CrowdStrike file update bricks Windows machines around the world

Have Microsoft not heard about backup and rollback?

The point of containers is they aren't VMs, yet Microsoft licenses SQL Server in containers as if they were VMs

markl66

Now with .NET Core and EF Core, can host database in MySQL and talk to it via EF Core by C#/LinQ, so avoiding using the expensive SQL Server solution, esp. the one that tries to tie you to Azure. .NET Core/MySQL can be hosted on Linux/Mac

So how do the coronavirus smartphone tracking apps actually work and should you download one to help?

Having worked in operating theatre, I use my knowledge of infection control to leave my phone at home. Not only will it likely get contaminated outside, but it's automatic to put it to one's face on incoming call. We are meant to be in lockdown, so should not be walking more than 2km from home, at least here in Ireland. Can we surely go 2km without the need for our phone?

Chat messages in Skype for Windows are bang out of order – so here's how to 'fix' it for now

markl66

no excuse

How can there be any excuse for such a bug, it is one of the most basic requirements for a messaging system and it used to work. Someone has re-factored the code no doubt but without proper regression testing. How this company still exists is unbelievable

Windows 10: What's coming in 2016?

What comes next for Windows 10?

thanks for the fish

no surprise here, one of the reasons I emigrated to Ireland last summer, good luck and thanks for all the fish

SMS

""If you create a product that allows evil monsters to communicate in this way"

In the case of Paris, that is vanilla SMS, so we should ban SMS?!

These people are idiots. Maybe look at the evidence and find out why we failed to uncover the plot that was not using encryption?

UH OH: Windows 10 will share your Wi-Fi key with your friends' friends

markl66

This now the top "feature" for not "upgrading" to Windows 10

What is scary, is even if I stick with Windows 7 and Ubuntu, any visitor/friend/family that visit who have Windows 10 or an MS Phone and I share my Wifi password with then shares it with unknowns. Considering the average number of Facebook friends people have, it's a lot. Since I let a room using AirBnb, and my guests quite rightly would like to use my Wifi, if they are using Windows 10, the answer will be NO. I also have work computers on my network with sensitive data from clients on.

Android 'stands on Microsoft's shoulders', says MS lawyer

markl66

quite absurd and incorrect

"These devices have moved from having a rudimentary phone system to being a full-fledged computer, with a sophisticated, modern operating system"

Android is actually based on Linux derived from Unix an OS that I was working on in 1984 and existed earlier than that, at a time when it was already ahead of where MS Windows is today and before I ever heard of MS. I fail to have any idea what patents they can be talking about. Is it not true that Windows phone 7 has only just managed to handle multi-tasking? Apple Max OSX is also built on basically BSD Unix, is that two derived from MS? I was using Unix in 1984 on a computer that could handle 30+ students logged on at once, that is not a modern operating system, but one certainly more advanced than any MS has come up with. lol

Ballmer disses Android as cheap and complex

Computer Scientist

Yes, I am a computer scientist and I do own an Android phone. I think what Ballmer meant was he is not a computer scientist and does not know how to use an Android phone.

Mass ASP.NET attack causes websites to turn on visitors

markl66

yes it is to do with ASP/ASP.NET

if you read the blog entry and look at the link to google search results, you will see it IS targetting ASP/ASP.NET websites. Whether the attack would work against PHP sites is not the point, the google results clearly show .aspx pages being returned, so yes they are affecting ASP.NET sites. OK they may be poorly codes, and they may not be:

As a PHP developer and an ASP.NET developer, I can say it is not always the case that developers are at fault, sometimes the framework code in .NET does not do what it should, as in the past I have had to code my own routines. Not saying that's whats going on here.

Win 8 haters are just scared of change, say MS bosses

FAIL

touch on desktop = fail

I agree with Steve Jobs, touch on vertical does not work. As a programmer of 20 years experience and having suffered two bouts of RSI, one thing I know is really bad ergonomically - working with arms raised. It's not comfortable and will damage people. The mouse and keyboard work fine. At home/office I use Windows XP/7 (games), Ubuntu/Mac (work), Android (phone), iOS(iPod). Horizontal on the desktop is bad too = neck problems.

Apple blocks sale of Samsung's Android fondleslab across EU

It's not a design

Being an engineer and looking at said "design", I am pretty sure that is not a design, more like a sketch. I can't even see any dimensions. Have I missed something? Actions like this really turn me off Apple.

SQL survives murder attempt by mutant stepchild

Microsoft is easier

Having programmed for many years in both .NET and PHP, my personal opinion is I find PHP easier. I still like the idea of being in control of exactly what gets sent to the browser. I made a choice to cross from .NET web application development over to PHP, because I like the language, it's more compatible with my preferred platforms and I know I am not going to be forced to retrain every few years or be totally dumped in favour of the next big MS tech. I used to work in the NHS, where the management thought PHP was not for big professional applications, I thought Facebook?

Nuclear not required for life on this planet

Why are some comments on here so aggressive? I don't like the attitude that because some people have an opinion, others of a different opinion call them twits. Well I am no twit but personally would feel safer in a world without nuclear energy. I don't full understand the physics, but to my reasoning, even if the chance of a bad nuclear accident were very small, over the possible lifetime of the global nuclear industry (1000s of years?), multiply by the number of power stations and take into account the time these radioactive elements take to decay, I expect the risk to life to be high. I personally like the path of energy conservation and using as little energy as possible in our lives, that then we dont NEED these scary technologies.

Thumb Up

Nice backdown

I am super impressed with how they got off the bandwagon, politicians could learn a lot from that - well done!

Firefox ahead of IE in Europe, boosted by Chrome effect

markl66

I use them all

For Web development Firefox cause of the add-ons, otherwise Chrome. I use Opera to open really big xml files etc, but I dont like it except it is fast. I use IE for testing only. And of course my desktop is Ubuntu.

mickey mouse

As a professional ASP.NET developer I have migrated to PHP out of choice and view it as a more useful language. As for Mickey Mouse - Facebook is written in it - end of.
