UK attorney general plans crackdown on 'trial by social media'

ummmm....

"Well just as the US immigration are asking for people social media account before they can get a visa"

I recently visited the US (albeit on the visa waiver programme) you still need to apply for an esta and at no point was any mention of my social media accounts made.

My travelling companion required an actual visa and again no mention of of her social media accounts was made....

Re: Worth it?

"I can't imagine for one minute any other nation ally or not, who would be willi g to put their expensive toys at risk to protect ours. Not in a real war."

I guess it's because you don't understand the way these things work perhaps you should read up on some military history?

A bunch of countries with different capabilities "ally" themselves. These "Allies" provide different bits of any given task force...

Country A has a bunch of Frigates (say) but no Air cover, country B has a load of air cover but not many frigates... so country A says to country B "Hey, give us some Air cover and we'll protect you with our Frigates!" That's how being "Allied" works... for other real world examples see pretty much any armed conflict from history.

For what it's worth, I seriously doubt that we would ever find ourselves in a shooting war with either Russia or China. Russia's only aircraft carrier is followed around by a bunch of tugs and a ship full of spares.

Interestingly, there are several sites that I would be happy to pay a nominal monthly fee to browse but we all know that even if a site is behind a paywall it will still serve ads and that's the issue right there. As a consumer I'm willing to play fair ad slingers aren't, so fuck them. Unitl relatively recently I paid to subscribe to the Telegraph online... still had ads.. Guardian wants me to subscribe... still has ads., I'm willing to be that the Times still serves ads behind it's paywall.

And we know that Sky customers have an entirely ad free experience.... ho ho ho...

Re: I need Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom

"I am not sure there is anything other than GIMP to replace Photoshop "

GIMP is not even close to being a replacement for photoshop.

yes, there are alternatives to lightroom and photoshop but nothing integrates with my website or social media channels as well as lightroom. I can publish directly from LIghtroom into my portfolio, dropbox, facebook, instagram, twitter, I don't need to create multiple jpeg copies of any given image, I simply publish the raw files using lightroom, they are converted to the correct format on the fly.

This is such a huge advantage over everything else. all my images are contained within a single environment and greatly simplfies my workflow.

Re: Market research

"The dev has to sit beside the secretary first, before any dev work commences and watch what she does"

That is *not* the dev's job, that is the job of a BA. The problem I've found (speaking as someone that has done both) is that a lot of BA's don't seem to be able to understand how a person's business process works although to be fair a lot of users don't understand how to explain what they do but a BA should be able to get the process out of the user even if the user doesn't realise they're explaining!

The dev can only dev what he's/she's been asked to via the spec.

"only get one bill that would be less than the individual subscrtiptions"

And here is the flaw in your plan.

There is simply no way I can see any Apple product being sold for less than a single competitor yet alone a bunch of them.

I use Freesat / Netflix total monthly cost 9 quid if I were to add Amazon my monthly cost increases to 18 quid a month.

How can Apple provide me with the same services as both of those for enough of a saving to me to make me switch? I'd say they can't.

single sign on is not a deal breaker for me, I'm quite happy to switch between apps because its not exactly complicated and they are already both in the same place IE my set top box.

Most of its good stuff isn't made in-house anyway.

ummm.... they do still have to pay for it though and of course, those shows are made not speculatively but because someone [at the BBC] has commissioned it.

I know it's unfashionable but I think the beeb is pretty good value for money particularly when you compare it to say, Sky, that charges you twice as much money and still throws a large amount of adverts at you while showing a lot of programming that has been commissioned and paid for by the BBC.

Beeb plus Netflix / Prime is all you need for a full spectrum of stuff. It can be yours for less than the price of a Sky sub and is mostly advert free.

Of course, he should have been supervised so that's also an error. should he have been sacked? Probably not. and certainly not in the way he was.
