Jeeezus, perhaps you need to wonder a little further than the first "free broadband" provider that comes up on google. There is a vast difference between good and bad providers, and the fact that they may use Openreach infrastructure has nothing to do with the quality and security of their offering.

My Humax box has just told me it's going to delete the YouTube app because YouTube is switching to https and they can't be arsed to update the app.
I had to phone HSBC when my old phone died in order to re-enable the security app on my new phone. At the end of the call they suggested I might want to try voice recognition for phone banking, despite the fact they'd spent the last 10 minutes struggling to understand me because I'd almost lost my voice completely with tonsillitis.
Do we really need to be worrying retaining the sort of tech firms that inhabit around Silicon Roundabout? Hipsters sucking up funding catapults to write apps with no viable business model, except hoping they might get bought out by Google or Facebook.
The real UK tech industry is based all around the UK, and intends to stay here.
It seems that the claim behind this story is that AI systems have been trained on datasets which reflect the majority culture in the countries which are developing them. Then this has been jumped on by those eager to take offence and mislabelled as racist. According to them every dataset has be to ethnically/gender/sexually balanced, or even adjusted to be positively discriminatory to certain groups they feel deserve special attention.
tl;dr It's crap.
Brands aren't even consistent any more. Some of the better named white good manufacturers don't make their lower end models, but farm them out to cheaper companies. It might allow them to cover more market segments, but if those models don't have the same quality and reliability, it's going to bring down the entire brand. See exploding tumble dryers for example.
