Cheapness of Nexus 7

Why do the fanbois always criticize the "cheapness" of Nexus devices. These are the same people who say how wonderful Apple are as a company for making so much profit.

What they don't seem to realise is that the devices that Apple make are just as cheap to produce, just that they are fleecing the fanbois by adding a massive premium!

I think that is more down to lax gun control than facebook or twitter. Information always gets passed somehow. I don't like facebook much but it is not their fault if people decide to go nuts.

Re: What the fu..

Between the age of 18 and 20 the minimum wage is £4.98 against the minimum wage for 21 and over being £6.08. Personally I think this is age discrimination. It means that 2 people doing exactly the same job but different age get paid different rates.

I experienced this a long time ago when I was a 16 year old summer vacation worker and I was working with an 18 year old doing the same things. I found out and pointed it out to the boss who was genuinely mystified why I should be upset!!

Yet again the UK is behind on customer service

I lived in India for a couple of years and tried to get an 8mb connection. The ISP would not sell it to me as I was too far away to get that speed. Even when I told them that I would be happy with 6mb, they said I could only buy the 4mb package (next one down) as otherwise I could report them afterwards!

Note that I almost always got the full 4mb when I ran speed tests.

Difficult to compare Android but....

Android is a difficult platform to judge due to the many different manufacturers and their versions of the Android experience. I can understand why one example phone was used, however it seems strange to me that the reviewer did not choose a phone with Android 2.3 especially as the latest iPhone 4S was chosen.

Why do people think therer should be anything in it for them?

Well these are businesses providing a service. If you don't want them spying on you, don't use them. As they say, nothing comes for free. If you want to use the service, you have to pay the price. In this case you give your personal browsing habits.

It just depends what price you are willing to pay.

Please do not comment on personal tastes

There are too many issues of personal taste in this review, especially at the beginning.

E.g. you don't like haptic feedback , I think it's good though so why is this a bad point of the device especially as you can turn it off.

I can also see that a swish noise when turning a page is annoying, but it may not bother others.

Also you have started off the review with what seems to be a negative point of view regarding the name "10.1". It's just a name!!!! Andto then criticise the use of Android 3.1 is then just plain ridiculous.

'Up to' broadband claims out of control, says Ofcom

"UP TO" is meaningless

But the problem is that "UP TO" can be anything. There seems to be no liability on the provider to PROVE that you can get the fastest speed and how regularly. I would say that there should be some kind of measure stating that on average speeds should be within 20% of the "UP TO" speed. Otherwise I can have a service which I state is up to 1Gb and charge £100 per month for it and only actually provide 1Mb.

What we need along with the "UP TO" speeds is SLA's and the relevant software on the routers to give the figures to back them up.

I've had no problems

I have the VM 50Mb unlimited use package and have had no problems at all. Whenever I have tested, it has been the website I visit that has the limitations on speed, not VM.

VinnyR

Other countries do it differently - but it is not necessarily good.

I lived in India (Chennai) for a couple of years and at the time (2008) tried to get the fastest available connection which I think was 8Mb from my telephone provider (Airtel). However they actually refused to sell it to me because they said I was too far from the exchange and there was no prospect of getting those speeds. Instead they sold me the 2Mb connection and I virtually always got the speed that they stated.

There is a down side to this however. I would have loved a faster connection and I could probably have got 4-5Mb if they had allowed me to buy the 8Mb connection. So the problem is that unless you want companies to vary the cost according to what speed you can get based on distance from exchange etc, you will be limited to either doing what the UK does and "mis-selling" speeds or refusing to sell speeds that aren't available, but at the same time not allowing people to get the speed that is available.

Re Ugggg

@MS Rocks

What's the problem with the OS? All you see from the 2 pictures is a home screen with various apps scattered around. Yes the choice of the background looks a bit childish, but the rest are app icons, a widget and a status bar at the top.

Apart from the fact that Widgets are available, what is so much different to the disorganised list of apps that is available from Apple?
