Micros~1? ClippyZilla? BSOD Bob? There can be only one winner. Or maybe two

We'll see you on Monday, in the [Insert Name Here] roundup. ®

Mind you, IF it arrived here in a timely manner, I'd perhaps had added to the hilarity. But since it didn't arrive till MONDAY morning, my humor would be received far too late!

HK$ 60 - haircut for life!

Here in Hong Kong, many years ago, I used to sit - in very close proximity to the crowded sidewalks of Aplui Street in Sham Shui Po - to get a HK$40 {about 4 UK Quid} haircut from an aged crone.

But when progress wiped out her stall, or old age carried her away, I then invested in a ~HK$60 package of rechargeable haircutter & ancillary attachments in the aforementioned Aplui Street, but after some years of use, I had to crack open the casing to replace the rechargeable batteries.

It is still going strong, and every 4 weeks or so, my 'pina domestic helper does an excellent job of making my head look "good" again.

Forget about those pesky closures, Windows 10 has an important message for you

Re: "not giving Windows 10 enough headroom"

"" "not giving Windows 10 enough headroom"

Just how much is enough ? Windows has long been the specialist in eating up the disk space, nice to see that the latest version is keeping with tradition.

Microsoft has always considered that it has the entire disk to itself.""

Last year, here in Hong Kong, I acquired a Laptop from a far from far-thinking manufacturer (an Asus) sold to me by a young lady who said that she was going to UK.

I was far from "chuffed" when I tried to update it on a 32GB SSD - It was totally unable to surrender the required SSD "space" - tho' I did much later discover that this "problem" could be got around by using an additional "Thumbdrive" of ~16GB.

Farting around like that was not my forte, so I wiped the SSD clean & replaced the original W10 perversion with its latest creation which fitted okay.

Not wanting to every be limited to *having* to reinstall sometime later, I promptly sold it - at a profit via a GeoExpat website here in the "Pearl of the Orient".

Re: The long, dark teatime of the next few months

Hmmm, here in "the Pearl of the Orient" (Hong Kong) there's no shortage of Milk !

Sod the Tea! That's what my HK Chinese wife quaffs [without milk]

I need instant Coffee, and that's easily acquired in the Supermarkets.

As for MILK ----> there's plenty of that; I much prefer full cream "Jersey (UHT) milk" from 759 Shop, though they do also have skimmed *&* semi-skimmed milk!

At little more than a Quid a Litre, they bring back long suppressed memories of drinking Jersey milk out of glass bottles back in UK in the 60's.

That was shortly before I saw the sense of getting out of 'nose-diving' "Darling Harold" Wilson's misruled UK.

Get burned up - sure kills Wuhan virus !!

I say *YES* too.

I didn't bother to renew my UK driving license when it expired.

I could still drive around on my Hong Kong driving license - but I don't any more ... I'm getting too old to drive in Hong Kong - for my own safety - or for that matter, in any other country!

As for my UK Passport: that co$t a small fortune to renew about 8 or 9 years ago.

With Xi's Commie Wuhan virus going around - I'm uncertain that I'd survive before the Passport "dies" - I might just die before it expires, and if I survive, I getting to the stage when I'd far rather "stay home" especially since my expensive 5 year Commie China visa expired half a year ago & I no longer have the lust to go just across the "Bamboo Curtain" to Shumchun to visit the massive computer malls there.

One might say, "there's some part of a foreign land that will be forever England" ---> But not for me, I'll be cremated after the local anatomy classes in HK University have finished cutting me up - and my ashes handed back to my family to be deposited into the South China Sea.

It's the cheapest way to go and no Ching Ming / Cheung Yeung nonsense for the survivors each year!

Stiction and the utility program to beat it!

I recall, in the dim & distant past, that I acquired a utility that allowed the users to "park" the heads close to the spindle - rather than anywhere else on the "Viagra" disk's surfaces. [40MB MFM Seagate]

Not so much effort to break the "stiction" if the heads are parked up close to the spindle.

So many years ago that I completely fail to remember if my acquisition of this utility was ever strictly necessary, or whether it was a "just in case" belt, braces, and a long bit of string" to "save my trousers hitting the floor". <Grin>.

Re: Bankers

Oh "Nationwide" is NOT okay as far as I am concerned - having lived in Hong Kong and elsewhere abroad for more than 45 years, Nationwide dumped me into the shit some months ago !

I can no longer view my balance "on-line" any more.

I'm demanding that since I can't see the balance increases with my miniscule UK Gov't pension they revert to airmailing me a statement showing the balance at frequent intervals.

So far, I've not had any confirmation that they WILL do that !

It's not that my "Atlantic Pesos" amount to much value there, but it would be "nice" to know how much is there!

Me - a HK$50,000 SCMP Ikea Winner.

Many years ago - when I wore a younger man's clothes - I entered a South China Morning Post competition (can't recall what it required me to do).

I "won" a coupon worth Hong Kong $50,000 to be used on Ikea products.

Well, that sort of "win" could have required SWMBO & I to purchase another flat to use up all our winnings [and some more].

We took some items and then circulated around that anyone wanting some discounted IKEA stuff and were willing to collect the IKEA delivery from our home [Ikea demanded that all the HK$50,000 stuff was delivered to one address in a maximum of three deliveries].

That was more years ago than I can now remember. We had enough "buyers" to get rid of everything that we couldn't use and gathered in some loot for it.

Of all the items we got "for free" - only a solitary table lamp remains beside one of our TV's.

Weird civilians who have the right to use potentially lethal violence against other civilians.

Don't know about "potentially lethal violence against civilians". The black "pigs" here in HK have been running out of control for months now!! Lost count on the number of assaults on protesters *&* passers-by!!!!

Hong Kong i-Cable

Hong Kong i-Cable:

Hong Kong i-Cable: Telephone "line" : $65 per month - riding on my i-Cable connection.

Hong Kong i-Cable: "Broad Band" D 200/ Up 10 Mbps : $123

I have been using 50/10 for the last 4 years, and that is perfectly adequate for my purposes.

Contract renewal time gave me an opportunity to cut the costs & somewhat increase speeds!

US$1= ~HK$7.75

Grotty British £1 = ~HK$9.67 and getting worse by the hour! [ I recall when it was £1=HK$16 !! ].

Yes feeding your baby vodka, whisky etc. is abuse. Whereas traditional Gripe water (3.6% alcohol) is good parenting. ""

That "traditional Gripe water" only ever worked once with quietening my daughter some 32 years ago.

I don't think that she ever bought any for her new born - now 4 year old daughter - years ago.

Haven't even seen it in Hong Kong pharmacies nowadays - but I really don't go seeking it when Chinese "Bamboo Wine" from the supermarkets works well for my indigestion !

A Policeman's lot is not a happy one: "The Pirates of Penzance" Gilbert & Sullivan.

I recall, something like 60+ years ago, a UK man who'd fitted up his car with a bell [well I did mention it was a looong time ago] - Belled a car in front as it was driving through Thornton Heath in South London.

His choice of "prey" wasn't very good - for he'd chosen to "gong" an undercover Police car.

I don't think it turned out very well for him!!

Here in Hong Kong, during recent weeks, the "Fuzz" have been accused of failing to display their rank & numbers whilst beating up marchers against the Hong Kong Government's attempt to force extradition laws to fling ALLEGED criminals back to Communist China.

It was put about by the "Fuzz" that Warrant cards need only be carried by one member of the squad tasked with beating up violent (& not so violent protestors) on the streets.

Needless to say, I rather chuckled when the protestors surrounded the Police HQ in Wanchai all day and into the early hours of the next day - so it was effectively "sealed off" !!

I think I can say that any "goodwill" towards this in-Disciplined Service has rather evaporated if one questioned the majority of the Hong Kongers - apart from the Commie Running Dogs that infest HK.

Re: 32 Gigs

I know the feeling well ! I bought a secondhand Asus and also discovered that it was similarly un-upgradeable due to a crappy 32GB storage inside it.

I got around this problem by "force-feeding" the very latest Win 10 - deleting anything that stood in the way - with perversion Win 10 May 2019 issue.

I then shifted it to someone else just to get rid of it.

HK$50,000 Ikea Winner.

Loooong long ago, I was a winner of a Hong Kong $ 50,000 "cheque" to be spent on Ikea goods in their HK shops.

I thought that I'd have to buy another HK flat to make use of all the stuff that I could acquire - but my SWMBO rustled up a number of friends who actually wanted some Ikea gear at a discount.

I ordered their requirements - had it delivered to our abode - and these friends did the right thing, collected and paid ca$h for the discounted items.

That was ~23 years ago, but now the only item we still have is a heavy table lamp - which seldom gets switched on, but have got rid of the obsolete incandescent bulb for a modern LED lamp & Dimmer.

NS&I is a persistent PITA

I'm pissed off with NS&I as they NEVER advise changes of their "rules" anywhere subscribers can INSTANTLY see them.

Like today, in Hong Kong, I was in receipt of my returned cheque for Atlantic Pesos (£) 720 which has infringed somehow on their CHANGED form for subscribing my miserable UK pensions (for several months) into the hands of my Granddaughter.

It was several years ago - when I had collected all the info that THEY could provide - that I decided that my pittance would be better served in passing on to my granddaughter - that they - and especially Jane.Platt decided to "evict" my own £50,000 holding a few days from the next draw on the specious argument that I had complained too much at being buggered around by them in my attempts to get my initial deposit secured for my granddaughter.

Hi, Are you "Hull Exile" ?? Can't find "Radio Paradise" in the Pangasinan Philippines via my "RadioSure" player!

"Home Radio" and Mitcham brings back memories!

Loooong ago - I lived up on Pollards Hill, Norbury S.W.16 - and weekly went to the Mitcham Ham Radio Club & also constructed items - mostly from bits acquired in Lisle Street & Tottenham Ct Road,

By 1967 I had "woken up" to the way UK was heading - so I headed out on a round the world hitch-hike, and finally, years later I ended up in Hong Kong with a HK Chinese wife!!

Been here more than 40 years and am as happy as a "Pig in shit" - with places like Aplui Street in Sham Shui Po filled with components - and then there's "SEG Plaza" in Futian District of Shumchun which is a veritable cornucopia (12 floors of components & electronic devices & has several other competing component buildings close by).

Weighty subject ---> AR88 !!

Looong, Loong ago I went up to Lisle Street in Soho & bought this wonderful radio - an "upgrade" from the R1155 radio I'd been using for years.

Now came the problem of getting it home from Soho back to my then home in Norbury, SW16.

Luckily, in those days, it was possible to phone up for a mini-cab at a Shilling a mile & get it into the back of the vehicle for the ~20 mile home.

I completely forget just how I got it upstairs to a very sturdy wooden table in my bedroom - or even when, years later, I sold it sometime prior to hitch-hiking around the world. Well at 77 years old - it was back in the mists of antiquity, so I can't recall those time now.

Latest Win 10 update screws ALL Internet connections

It does deserve repeating - at least in my case: Latest Win 10 update screws ALL Internet connections !!

Hong Kong Rules OKAY!!!!

It IS interesting to read the comments here - makes me VERY happy to be in Hong Kong where the mobiles I have had cost me between £60 & £70 with a dual SIM, and talking about SIMs, I only use voice & NO data, and the original HK$50 "starter" for something like 180 days actually cost me HK$30 (£3) with a "recharge" co$ting me HK$48.

The ONLY reason I "recharge" is because at the end of the recharge period I always have an astonishing HK$150 or so still in credit. I just CAN'T drive down the balance !!

Previously - I'd run the credit balance down to microscopic value - letting it expire - since a new SIM with new number would only cost me £3 for another multi-month validity.

As for the mobiles - a Doogee costing about HK$700 (£70) which I sold for $750 a couple of years later, and a Lenovo [also dual SIM] for ~£80 ----> Both from Groupon.HK.

HK$10 South China Morning Post for free for many years!

Many years ago, I found that I was receiving an apparently "free" copy of the local "South China Morning Post".

I lapped it up, reading it before the usually one day late "The Register" arrived in my e'mail box.

Then I got qualms that, one day, I'd be lumbered with a massive newspaper bill.

The SCMP has gone from what I now reckon was a paltry HK$1 in the late '70s, to its grossly inflated HK$10 nowadays..... But I digress.....

I finally tackled the newspaper delivery office who also delivered SWMBO's "Ming Pao" Chinese squiggle-talk newspaper at the same time - and they calmed my fears by saying that my "free" SCMP was one of many freely handed out to bloat the SCMP's "Circulation figures".

How they also justified the free handing out the weekend edition of the "Financial Times" - I didn't bother to try to find out !!

Having spent ~20 years owning an up-market flat, I'm rather loath to sell up & move elsewhere, I'm afraid that the "free" SCMP will never re-appear!

Optical media not obsolete - Yet.

Well, I don't know about "the rest of the world" but I - in "the Pearl of the Orient" - still make use of the occasional CDROM {I used one to create a WinPE rescue disk just yesterday}..... and I've collected a load of Win 10 set-ups on DVD over the years.

I've even got a few - seldom used - 3.5" floppy disks which are VERY occasionally called in for "rescue" purposes too.

Of course YMMV.

Lenovo's 2017 X1 Carbon is a mixed bag

Damned Ethernet dongles

I have, on occasion, had to use a USB2 to LAN dongle on a Pipo Win 10 Tablet and a Pipo "Airweight" Laptop, but it seems that such data transfers are little better than 5Mbps.

I had hoped to try the dongle (at about HK$50 each = GB Pounds ~5) on a USB3, but don't have a device with USB3 available.

I looked at the Lenovo dongle - in the futile hope that at least one of their various varieties was a real USB plug on the end - but the ones I saw were "customised" to NOT use any USB port at all.

My tests of my locally purchased [Aplui Street, ShamShuiPo, Kowloon] showed that my Wi-Fi connection to one of my several Wi-Fi Routers was considerably FASTER than this HK$50 dongle to my LAN !

OK... Red wire or black... *Clickety* You've emailed the schematic? Yes, got it! It's opening. And... WHAT? NO!

Can't find "a" mode on modern Laptops

The LAST time I had access to "a" [5GHz] Wi-Fi connected computer was way back in the days of IBM T60 model.

I - long ago - bought a "Groupon" offer of a Belkin a/b/g router - but almost as loooong ago I sold my last IBM T60P - and since that time - I have had many Lenovo's offerings, but NOT ONE of them had the option of hopping on board of 5GHz.

I have yet to find any of the models that offered 2.4 *&* 5 GHz connections.

Come to that, none of the other manufacturers have had 5GHz on then - or even as an optional "extra".

For a few months I blasted my apartment blocks with signals on almost all of the 1-13 channels, I finally desisted when I reckoned I was just wasting my electricity & my family didn't really need such a plethora of channels to select between.

Having let (per)version 10030 install itself automatically, not only did it totally screw up my 500 GB Samsung SSD, but also a 120GB Intel one as well, & to crown it all, it somehow managed to screw up my 1TB "Viagra" Disk when I swapped over - to get a what was a previously working W8.1 & connected up the Samsung SSD.

I've only recently come back home from a trip across to Lenovo Service Centre the North shore of Hong Kong Island to dump my Lenovo 440E in for fixing.

Give me "Cockies" any day!

Several - make it about 13 years ago -I had an over inquisitive Hong Kong pigeon forever landing on my balcony's floor, so I decided to get it 'pissed out of its tiny mind' by soaking some bread in some "high octane" liquor - what the Chinese call "Bamboo Wine" which is great for indigestion at 45% alcohol by volume.

Well, the pigeon partook of the alcoholic bread & managed to fly off to a lower level in my building and created such a cooing racket that it drew its friends & relations from the locality to see what the fuss was all about!

As I recall, the pigeon never came back for "The hair of the dog" again!

Where I live now, on the West side of HK Island, I can frequently see Sulfur-crested Cockatoos flying by in a gang, all squawking their heads off. They are not a "native breed" here but allegedly escaped captivity multi-many years ago and attempts by the then local council to stop 'em breeding, but filling up holes in trees with concrete was - luckily - a failure.

FON ownership a waste of time - for me anyway.

Hmmm, I have THREE of the basic FON Access Points around my home in HK, one is troublesome in that it requires power-up and then pull the DC power cable & re-insert if the unit is ever to connect back to one of my many routers & on to Internet.

In my travels - I have never found ANY FON access points to connect to - and I have THREE good working reasons as to why I should - if I can ever find an access point outside of my flat.

Also, I've never had any "traveller" access via my FON Wi-Fi points - the only access has been the occasional very local - read, in my building complex - using the "Open Channels that my FON's offer for free from their additional high gain antennas.

The only reason I keep them active is to provide my 'pina maid with Wi-Fi signals in her room.....

Luckily, when I travel, I usually get "free" Wi-Fi from the hotels I stay at; the FON units - which cost me HK$48 or so (years ago) at a promotional time - are rather a waste of time!

What's that crunching noise? Lenovo running over rivals' bones

Lenova's failure to upgrade drivers

My grouse with Lenovo is that they did not make the Windows 7 touchpad drivers available for their N500 model, so I'm lumbered with HAVING to carry around a USB Mouse *&* a spare battery for it!

Added to that, I got this model secondhand in Hong Kong from a non-techie user who couldn't get it to switch on.... I just removed one of the two RAM strips & it has booted up ever since.

Fitting a second RAM strip again caused it to fail to boot up until removed!

I now run with a single 2 GB RAM strip 'cos the Lenovo Service Dept in HK couldn't offer any solution that was co$t effective - or supply a Win 7 driver for the touchpad. <Grrrrrh!!!>

Reg man says '拜拜' to Honkers, ponders Asia's future role in tech world

Hordes of street crapping "Locusts" from the North!

So '拜拜' is "simplified Chinese characters"??

Actually - Hong Kong uses "traditional" Chinese characters!

Neither of which are understood by most of the rest of the world - even the so called "Yellow Bananas"!

And as for Chinese place names "converted" into "English" - Pah!

A city in Canton Province's Pearl River Delta is spelt out as "Shiqi" - which you'd *think* ought to be pronounced as "She-kwi" but actually comes out as "Sek-Kay" from the mouth of a local.

And due to "re-education" - the Commie Locust hordes who pour into Hong Kong to strip the shops to resell everything from Baby Milk Powder to luxury goods expect the shop staff to speak Mandarin *&* provide "simplified" Chinese character signs too.

These used to call us "westerners" 'Barbarians' - But frequent altercations between the civilised Hong Kongers & the barbarian hordes from the North over their kids shitting and pissing on the streets of Hong Kong really show that it is THEY who are today's Barbarians!
