What are you, Apple? Storage upstart patents filesystem wrapper tech

Obligitory?

I sense the headline writers at El Reg have had a diktat from on high that they must have three verifiable and preferably sane excuses for not putting 'Apple' in.

Seems to be working as a lot of articles have Apple in the title and, actually, bugger all to do with Apple in the article.

Western Digital 'fesses up to Mavericks data loss mess

Re: Treat third party drivers with caution

@Dan 55

You didn't read the article, did you?

There are problems losing data when the WD software is installed, not with Mavericks itself. WD has known of this problem for a long time as it was reported on their own client forum when Mavericks GM came out over six weeks ago.

A LOT of people have lost a LOT of data due to this. And don't say 'backups' as they could have used a WD drive for that as well.

If tablets running Android range from £50 kids stuff to highly capable items like the Samsung Note 10.1 and above, then it's only common sense that 'Android' will sell more tablets.

Point is, will these companies make money and still be around or making tablets in a couple of years time? You can bet your nads that Apple will.

Re: not as bad as they could have been

Point is, Blackberries are simply unfashionable at the moment. The pace of change in fashion wif da yoof can change on a tuppence or celebs seen holding them, so don't write Blackberry off. They were just a 'little' slow in reacting to the iOS and Android revolutions. The Z10 looks like a damn good phone and promises well for the future.

OTH I think that Microsoft has a hill to climb (which is getting much, much steeper), dead weights holding them back (their reputation and Ballmer) and the fact that they've obviously completely missed the tipping point for Windows Phone success. As far as I can see the phones are reasonable attempts, but with a current coolness factor of a cardigan.

"and allowed OSX to be installed as a Windows replacement on x86 machines in order to dominate the desktop and laptop market when they had the chance"

And with that old, tired and incredibly stupid comment, you demolished your own credibility.

Apple uses its OS to sell Macs, on which it makes its money. A loss-leader in fact, and a great USP.

Microsoft (or 'Wintel' as you call them for some reason), make their money selling licenses for their OS on other people's hardware. They then make a huge amount of money selling software to run on that OS. It's Windows and Office licenses that keep Microsoft going, as most of the other things they do make very little or are huge loss-making black holes.

Why should Apple configure their OS to work successfully with the myriad of other computers, built by other people, for NO advantage? If they actually managed the feat (which in my opinion Microsoft has never achieved 100%) they would have had to indulge themselves in an on-going R&D effort that would cost billions. For NO advantage.
