Boffins spy on iPhone screens from 200ft away

lip reading through binoculars.

Interesting work, but it still requires a steady handed operator plus stationary and unaware subject, or can they carry out this analysis from composite CCTV footage?

Surely easier, more reliable, but probably less deniable, to intercept at the network message centre end.

Alert

Safety first! Do NOT "tune up" your power amplifier stage.

One of the biggest problems with non-type-approved CB kit is the splattering of its 4th harmonics plus intermodulation all over the air navigation band. Bit of a problem when you're on an instrument approach in precipitation down to 150 feet over a built up area when all of a sudden your ILS needle sods off to infinity whilst some numbnutz Kris Kristofferson wannabe endeavours to chat up the burger-van lady. No more than inconvenient to an experienced pilot, but extremely harrowing, potentially life-threatening to an IFR tyro.

I might have missed an earlier article wherein their fate was explained, but I was expecting some mention of the plucky pommie underdogs.

Meh

Timekeeping by atoms not sloshy, precessing rock rotations and wobbly orbits.

UTC is, as you are well aware, based upon international atomic time (TAI) which simply measures the unrelenting march of caesium fountain clock cycles aggregated from over two hundred atomic clocks distributed around the globe. The quaint affectation of sidereal time is disseminated as merely TAI with the appropriate offset applied.

Much harder exploit via PS2

Of course nobody uses PS2 any more, but the exploit would also need to invoke an assembler, enter the code, assemble it and >then< run the executable instead of just [windows+R, malware_executable_name, Enter]

It is simply a metaphor which extends...

Other icons should be more controversial... really...

Iconifying a weapon of war really isn't that big a deal. Swords and shields are stock in trade for heraldry. It's also hard to go anywhere without seeing icons representing one of the most hideous methods of tortured execution conceived by man and it is simply accepted as ordinary. Perhaps other instruments of death should be made symbolic emblems. Cannister of VX nerve gas anyone?

Yes that's right. Jesus had blue eyes, wore long hair, a goatee and spoke with an English accent.

Cool story, despite only the slightest glimmer of truth, it seems perfectly plausible and entirely amusing.

I guess the clue is in the name of the "news" website: Bobolhando roughly translates as Silliness. Whilst we're on the subject, "acidez bucal" is more like "spitting vitriol". These guys are well into their Playmobil too. I think we should arrange a twinning ceremony, hook the Playmonaut up with some gorgeous Playmo-garota de Ipanema.

Pegman takes a holiday.

I would like to see Pegman donning a black balaklava to carry out virtual burglaries then pegging it off along his meticulously planned escape route with Peg-Police in hot pursuit. Oh how I wish I'd studied media production :(

YES! It's the twists-in-midair FALLING GECKO ROBOT!

Next out of the bag: CatBot

Geckos are all well and good, but since they're in the market of getting funds for dropping inverted animals and filming the look on their faces as they fall, can't we get conclusive evidence from the Gaffer taping two cats back to back gravity paradox experiment. Whilst we're at it let's have a try at the epoxying buttered toast to a cat's back experiment.

Step aside LHC lamers!

We're exploring the anti-gravity properties of toast buttered on both sides.

The 99p mobile phone: What's the catch?

Imsimil Berati-Lahn

Oh, of course...

So you buy your 99p phone (with mandatory £10 credit), sling it in your glovebox for emergencies.

Six months down the line, your £10 credit will have miraculously evaporated and your phone's number will go MIA.

Unless your account has a billed event within a period of six months, the network swipes your wonga and scrubs your account. They bleat something about credit holding / banking regulations when you protest. That's how they'll make their money on this ice-lolly.

Imsimil Berati-Lahn

The perfect mobile...

...For IED fabricators?

It somewhat of a bittersweet vindication for me as a former mobile phone design engineer that the technology has matured to such an extent that a communication device representing millions of man-hours work is sold for less than an ice-lolly.

Top Ten Retro PC Games

Old, not retro.

?...Retro...?

How do we define this term?

OCED says:

Retro: adj.

Contemporary creation imitative of a style from the recent past.

The works of Charles Dickens are old, not retro.

My recent (rather poor) novel written in a Dickensian style could be consisdered retro.

These games may be dated. Retro, they are not.
