Windows 10 S: Good, bad, and how this could get ugly for PC makers

Think the plan for S is probably a bit different.

Maybe it's just me, but kind of see S as becoming the default install for OEMs. Why pay for an OS when they can use a free one from MS? Makes sense for them to do so as if the customer wants more they can pay the Pro upgrade to MS.

Why might MS think this is a good idea? Mostly as it's direct cash to them for the upgrade fee, but it is also a huge push for developers to make for the MS Store as it could well become the default for all new machines. Maybe it's just me thinking this could be the move, but nothing else really makes a lot of sense.

And hacking of medical devices is new? It, it's the only way many devices actually do what's actually needed due to the piss poor security and the fact with a bit of home fiddling and you can access them far beyond what the manufacturers claim are possible.

Security to these companies is seen as one of those "not needed" or something they'll only watch what the opensource community is doing to improve their devices and then going out of their way to make it harder to prevent the community having home brew hardware far in advance of that they sell. But security to protect people?! That's never been on the agenda.

And how many machines on say Ingram/Exertis/all the rest for example are shipping with 10 on it? Sod all! All the channel is still shifting is 7 Pro (downgraded from 8.1 Pro) and 8.1 machines. Not like it matters as we (when customers request it) upgrade during setup for them. So really it's all due to the channel still being full of old kit.

Yeah very much so!

But part of the issue is the OS. We've been testing the things for kiosks which seemed to fit them well, and a nice small form factor is a great bonus. The Bing bong version of Windows needs upgrading to Pro, but no big deal with that to enable Kiosk mode. The issue though comes if you upgrade to 10. Seems that MS has only fudged in Kiosk mode in 10, and it's an utter dogs dinner. It only supports "apps", no white list like it did in 8, and it's even picky over what app you can run. So it'll run calculator and 3D Builder, but Edge and Weather are locked out! As is any other browser since they aren't "apps". The hardware itself is pretty nice and will be ideal once MS get Win10 finished, although fudging on with 8 also works for now at least.

That's the weird one though isn't it. It's coming to Pi, but not tablets. There was the other week the info they were yes going to have "something" on the tablets which sounded very much like what occurred with the WinMo 7 devices getting something with looked vaguely like 8 on them, but wasn't. Doing something like that might be good enough for the RT devices, and even the Pi.

It'll be good for trying to limit OS fragmentation as they discussed. But the issue is it's really going to murder the OEM market. The OEM's are still going to be buying licenses so that will make MS some cash. But with hardware in the last fair few years now happily handling WinX. The amount of people buying upgrade licenses was probably be so small it was ignorable.

But what happens if many users (highly likely) don't bother buying new hardware and just go down the home upgrade route? Will the large corporate customers go into rolling out upgrades instead of a hardware swap? If they do than MS is really digging a hole here for the OEM's, and they aren't exactly in a strong position as it is. Do think it's going to be interesting though to see how it shakes out down the line.

We've just kitted out the suits with 530's and 630's, coming from some god ancient Android 2.3 devices. Yes we paid bugger all for them, but they are really oddly chuffed to bits with them. More so as they have Excel and Word on them than anything else. But performance on such a low end machine is very snappy considering.

Yes I'm not using one myself, but the amount of phone for the money, not even Android can offer that at this price point at the moment.

Ok general curious question on this: "gets its greenish glow from diatomic carbon gas fluorescing in the sun's light" so diatomic carbon gas forms a gas at about 3650C, and this is in deep space which is cold, so what's making it heat up to this temperature considering it's not about to prang into the Sun? Probably missing something here but curious if anyone knows? Thanks.

Ideal for all the fitness types also, combine the thing with a blood glucose reader and a DNA sampler and you have it taking a blood sample to access it. Incorrect blood sample and you don't get in. The blood glucose sample is just used as the marketing front :P

Other advantage with it having to take a blood sample to access is on a phone at least it'll stop people fiddling with the things all day long. Or am I just being a grumpy old git?!

I actually quiet fancy one. Only real snag I have is it's tied into the whole Amazon eco system which other than buying the odd thing off when desperate I just don't use. The TV stuff is still lacking, and my music is something I wouldn't want to move. I kind of quiet liked the open pod bay doors idea also for it to control the garage door! But really something like this needs to works universally with whatever services I choose but that would need these services all to work together. And not a chance in hell of that ever happening!

What I don't get is why anyone, even more so a CEO of a big company needs to go and make a big publicity things about their sexuality or anything else. It's their personal thing, and fair enough. But why go out of the way to feed the trolls? People don't go on stage and proclaim they are heavily into porn, or donkeys, or intimate relations with Dyson's, so why do people actively proclaim to the world things like this. EE network whacked by 'PDP authentication failure' blunder

Not just this issue. Orange (kind of connected) hasn't been able to authorise any new pay as you go SIM without a mountain of grief for the last few days. New SIM goes in, receive text message saying you'll receive a number and so forth in the next 24hrs. 72hrs later...nothing. Call Orange, can't talk to anyone unless you have a number (not yet given). So only able to talk to EE, who aren't best chuffed about discussing Orange issues, but in the end transfer you. Get through to someone, and Orange will then disconnect you. So back to EE, back to Orange again, and eventually get some poor bloke in India really ticked off at the number of these he's getting this week. He finally authorises the SIM, and gives you a number and a further 24hrs later ta da. A collection of working Orange SIM's. An utter waste of time at the moment though to deal with until they can get their back end sorted out.
