A valid use for Windows 8?

Works well for me.

Going out on a limb here, but I've found Win8 has actually improved my workflow, the trick is how you use it.

I'm a 'heavy' desktop user and run a pretty standard setup with nice chunky widescreen for getting stuff done and a 4:3 panel off to the side.

The thing that TIFKAM allows you to do is park all your social & media stuff under the one hood and keep it contained.

When I need to get work done, I send Metro over to the second screen (tricky before you get the knack), where it can sit there and bleep away with it's tiles/webmail/Facebook/YouTube/whatever.

Meanwhile my main desktop screen has fewer windows open, less clutter and is more focused.

For what it's worth I've found having a clean and obvious seperation between work & play helps keep me on track when I need to, but still has my life accessable with flick of the eyes or the mouse.

Been running Win8 preview on my home PC for 2 weeks straight now.

Running a mix of games, social stuff and web development.

Took about 3 hours to get use to the new "workflow", but after that everything becomes very fluid.

Metro takes everything social and parks it under one hood where it's neat and contained.

Desktop apps function as always and the desktop now feels like a real "work space".

Switching between desktop and metro is visually jarring for the first few hours, mainly because metro looks very slick and a deskop looks a little 'last decade' by comparison, but after that is about the same as alt-tab in terms of annoyance.

Launching apps and searching for local (and remote) content in metro by just typing is easy and fast.

Starting Gimp is "Windows-Key-gim-Enter". Actually considering how much work has gone into the UI, getting tasks done with the keyboard is seriously fast and efficent. Application "contracts" are the secret sauce here.

I've got concerns about Win8 on ARM and I'm not sure it's an enterprise os.

But for my money at home I don't plan on looking back.

I played Civ and numerous other resource/builder type games.

I know that the best way to advance is to create a class that don't have to worry about where their next meal is coming from and can devote 100% of their resources to the crazy wacked out shit rank and file population can only dream about.

There is way to much confusion about this situation so simply ban sales of BOTH manufacturers devices in the markets in question until the courts can untangle the patents.

I suspect that would bring the parties to the table quick smart.

Been playing with the Office365 beta.

Took three lines of PowerShell to connect from my desktop to the remote Exchange server and import all the nice cmdlets into the local PS session.

Full cmd line control of my cloudy email.

As someone who's spent the last 15 years supporting MS environments, that was a bit cool.

Integration is certainly their selling point right now.

I just hope it's secure as all hell as well.....

As a consumer we all ready know some distribution channels are more expensive than others. You can buy Levis at a high street store or you can go hunting for the same thing in a discount mall.

Is there something stopping content providers, simply stacking a 30% margin on the Apple subscription vs the "factory door".

Some people will pay for the convenience of an in app purchase and others can save a few bucks by logging into the content provider web site.

All seems fair to me.
