Re: Patents dear boy, patents
Errr hasn't push email been around since IMAP?
Doesn't MS have Push email in exchange?
Surely there is way too much prior art for push email...
Personally I use IMAP and get instant notifications...

What I don't get is why we don't make our own fighters? surely if the French can do it, and the Americans can do it, we can do it??
This whole F35 project has taken what 20 years to get finished? really it takes THAT long to design and build them?
I say lets go for catapults, rent a few aircraft for now, and build our own combat planes in future!
Google protecting its employees? I'm actually quite impressed, no matter what their real reasons, its stopping any employee from being dragged into this just for driving a car!
I can forgive google for snooping un-encrypted data, since its unencrypted, and anyone using an open wifi network should know that their data is free for the world to see!
I've seen the improvement in gps since using wifi to assist, its a great idea, now all we need is some form of easy feedback for google maps/navigation to help fix the few times they don't tell you in time, or give bad instructions!
@DRender
The experiment sounded quite simple to me, I am surprised no one has thought of doing it before, surely its obviously a great way to generate random numbers (and I am no crypto nerd either, I just know more randomness is good for cyphers, the rest I leave up to the experts)
How will this work???
What is porn?
How will they detect that it is a porn site?
Do they consider a streaker porn?
Do they consider a nudist porn?
Do they consider an artistic nude by a famous artist porn?
It is just censorship in another form, once the ISP's show they can do it, then the gov will slowely creep what they censor until were restricted more than China..
I for one am going to write an email to my MP right now!
That landlord sounds evil,
I am a landlord myself, and I would never dream of entering my tennets home without prior notification and I would always prefer them present, while their renting from me, its their home and I won't violate it! I hope that landlord got locked up for what he did!
If someone walked in on me unannounced in my home, they should expect to be physically incapacitated & restrained before I ask who they are, I don't care who they are, in my mind an intruder is a deadly threat to my family & me until they are secured and identified...
It is different, my car can do around 140mph, and I can take it to a track in the UK and do it...
IF I buy a 3G phone, it will work in the country I buy it, I don't expect it to work over all different countries unless specifically brought for that, BUT if I buy a 4G device and a contract for it, I expect it to have 4G available..
The fact is the 4G device isn't even 4G really... Its a bit of a fraud.. its 3.5G at most...
"Your call is important to us, we are sorry for the delay.."
What a load of nonsense! we must stop this... I hope the person who signs the order is one of the people held responsible when someone dies due to this decision!
And lets be honest, privatizing a service is bound to lead to lower quality, forget saving a pitiful 5million, i'd rather save lives!
It makes you wonder whether they actually have brains inside those skulls?
No wonder our economy is in the toilet, the inmates are running the asylum!
Its like the stupid decision to buy trains from Germany when we build them in the UK, don't they realize that keeping people employed improves the economy, that in turn means more tax revenue meaning over the life of the project, keeping it in the UK is financially better.
It just goes to show that the decision makers can't handle the information..
If it was some kind of dirigible/weather balloon, I can see this being within the realms of possibility.... If they have the right minds behind it that is....
Who fancies coming up with a standard for a constellation of low cost dirigible network access nodes?
No central owner, just build, launch and they self configure!
There is nothing revolutionary about the screen, its evolutionary, i.e. basic evolution... they upped resolution to something that really is not needed but is nice to have.
There is nothing revolutionary about the ipad, tablets have been around for over a decade, we before ipad hit the scene, the difference now is that the tech has reached a point where they can be powerful as well as handy.
So far i have not seen ONE thing that the ipad can do that has not been done before in one way or another by someone else..
Personally I'd not touch an apple TV , I am still frustrated that the iPad can't play AVI's!
My PHONE plays AVI's, MKV's & any other format I've tried, and that was out of the box, so does my TV... Plus they both can access all the media from my Windows 7 PC, my iPad can't, neither can my Mac Book (well not found software that can yet)..
I do think an Android/Google TV sounds good, but as I've just brought a new TV, so i wont be upgrading that for a good few years...
"Voda and O2, two of the worst companies to deal with when you complain"
Odd I found Three to be the worst, since when I was with them their indian call center workers were incompetent, yet with Vodafone i've never had a problem, and always helpful UK call centers when I call.
But I do hope 3 stay in the market, since in Canary Wharf its hard to get a decent net connection on Vodafone but 3 works well
Skylon may not be fully funded, but they have a good chance of getting more funding once they prove the Sabre engine. I was mainly saying that they (a British company) has a better chance of a space plane than the USA government does, (and that is a slim chance funding wise so I doubt Skylon will see the light of day until way beyond 2020).
I agree totally that the US Private companies are much more likely to get into space next with a manned vessel, and I bet at a fraction of NASA's costs and complexity.
I'm looking forward to the next few years developments in US private space flight.
"At this point it's hard to tell just how much of a threat China's space plans pose to the US. China wants to reach the moon by 2020. By this time the US will have developed a space plane and other scramjet technologies."
You Really think that??? the US gov will be lucky to be able to get to the ISS without hitching a lift from Russia, China or a private taxi service...
Us Brits have a much better chance of having a working space plane by 2020 than the US of A does.. At least we have boffins (private company tho) working on a space plane, NASA just retired its rusting (metaphorically) space truck..
"the captain was not in the cockpit and had no chance of getting to it before the inexperienced copilot had stalled the jet into the sea"
Personally I find it concerning that the copilot would be so inexperienced they would not be able to control the plane without the computer, surely thats part of the regular tests they do!
The young generation have had their minds polluted by false information, until someone puts out a decent publicity campaign for nuclear power, they wont know anything better and they will oppose nuclear.
Nuclear is our ONLY option unless we want to loose our gadgets...
And as for nuclear waste... the volumes are minimal, and in actual fact I am sure much of it is radioactive enough to be of use in RTG's or similar!
Nuclear now I say!
Apple has no truly original design in the iPad/iPhone.
It looks like a star trek padd!
It looks like my notebook sitting on my desk, you know with paper in it..
Icons look just like my old Amiga desktop 20 years ago! A grid of icons, WOW!
The courts should have thrown out the apple design claims unless samsung were selling them AS iPads....
People want iPad like devices without the iOS or Apple, so let them buy them!
not really
There have been tablets/pdas/phones around for many years that look similar to the ipad / iphone.
my ancient 3g PDA video phone, that I cant even remember the name of, was similar enough to the iPhone 3/3gs. and acutally i think my galaxy s looks nothing like an iphone 3gs, and the galaxy s 2 is totally different to the iphone 4, there is no way you could mistake them as being the same!
Apple are just taking advantage of dumb judges that know so little about technology and design they will rule on anything that gets them media attention.
I would accept a technical patent on a real technological innovation as being a valid reason to pull it, but design? that's nonsense.
Next you will have them claiming they invented windows and folders in the os!
Sorry to say I tried installing Skype while in china recently, it gave me a version one so full of ads provided by a local partner, I quickly found a UK installer... No ads for me....
I for one will remove skype as soon as ads are added, it costs them nothing to let people use the free features, and they already charge for calling phones, so whats the problem? They NEED millions of users so they get super nodes, dont they realise they will alienate the people they need???
As soon as someone releases a decent video chat/conference client that works on android, iPhone, Windows and Linux, (well mac aswell I guess) then skype will go the way of ICQ, anyone remember that apart from me?
@John Molloy
have you ever used an android device?
Mine came with wordprocessor & spreadsheet that syncs with my online office choice,
yet I have to buy it for the ipad.
My android phone will run remote access programs in the browser, I have to spend $30 to get similar functionality with my remote destop provider on the ipad.
I can copy any files to and from my android phone, can I do that with my ipad? fat chance.
I can play ANY media file i have tried on my android phone, it takes me hours to convert for itunes to bother to take them.
I can run java apps on my phone, I can access ANY web page on my android phone.
and this is a PHONE not an ipad, not a tablet, just 2.2 android.
If your in any kind of business you would realise the ipad is just a toy not a tool.
And with apples locking down of apps, it means many apps will just never appear on it.
All he did was watch star trek and copy the padd!
And as for innovation, I was using PDA's for years before the IPhone came out, I was watching movies and doing things on my symbian pda phones well before the iphone came out.
All Apple did was buy out a keyboard company (fingerworks) to get the touch tech, (which stopped me from buying one of their lovely keyboards), then they stick in a pretty(ish) case with a pretty standard pda phone and a pretty interface and bam you have the iphone.
Then a few years later, stick the a pda in a bigger pretty case and here comes the ipad, just a large iphone.
All they did was make it pretty and have good marketing along with Apple fanboys to buy it.
I for one am glad he did not get it.
Bill Gates, while I am not a microsoft fan, he did deserve it for his non MS work.
