Hey fanboi, is that an EXPLODING BATTERY in your MacBook Pro?

Re: True it's about batteries, but...

Wrong. Read the article. The batteries in question that were sold at Best Buy were third party batteries----not the batteries that Apple uses as replacements. If you ordered a battery from Apple or went into an Apple Store to have a Macbook Pro battery replaced you will not have this problem.

Facebook jumps then slumps in first few minutes day's trade

Re: So they priced the IPO about spot on then

No they didn't. Read the article again. JP Morgan Chase, Morgan Stanley and other of the IPO underwriters purchased loads of stock before the closing in order to prop up the share price and avoid and even more embarrassing opening day. The big institutional investors and the big hedge fund managers were cautious because they have looked at the numbers and realized that Facebook has a revenue per user of only USD$9.00 which has been in decline the past three quarters (by comparison Google has a revenue per user of $63.00). Those guys in the market who do their due diligence know that so far Facebook has not come up with a viable profile growth model. All those 100's millions of eyeballs mean nothing if they are not clicking on sponsored ads and buying things (ask yahoo).

Charge of the Metro brigade: Did Microsoft execs plan to take a hit?

Re: What?

To: Hayden Clark:

Yeah, except that the UI on their Windows Phone is not going to look like the UI on their HP laptop unless they recently bought a new Windows laptop with the Metro UI; if they are using Windows 7 (or Vista) then your argument makes no sense---I assume you are aware of this and that you read the above article.. On the other hand, let me play Devil's Advocate here and refine your argument to make it more reasonable. Millions of Windows users around the world have purchased iphones and ipads and android devices DESPITE the fact that the OS is different from what they are used to (also millions of Mac users despite the fact that ios is different from OS X--although with Mountain Lion they are somewhat beginning to merge). Of course, consumers have not had much choice up until now if they wanted to purchase a mobile device; ios and android and not too much else. I have no opinion on whether or not Metro will be widely adopted on desktops and laptops or on phones. However, I think the only way a Windows tablet will be successful is if it can compete with the ipad and android tablets on price, weight, battery life and apps. I don't think people are going to buy a Windows tablet just because it is Windows.

The iPad is killing laptop sales

The really important salient fact

I think the really important, crucial aspect of the advent of the ipad is not how many units have been sold or whether or not android and other slates will provide serious competition for the ipad. In the long term the interesting thing to me is that very few of the slates, tablets, smart phones what have you that are expected to me introduced in the next 3 to 12 months will be running any version of Windows. In other words, Microsoft will have a lot of catching up to do in order establish any kind of position--let alone dominance-- in the mobile space as they were able to do so successfully in the desktop space many years ago. That is the real story here. I am not a real techie and I have used Windows PCs and Macs in the past and am not a fanatic about either OS. But I do know and follow business news and trends and to me this seems to be the most significant aspect of the whole ipad/slate/ mobile device sector. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft deals with this issue if they are unable to somehow leverage their near monopoly on operating systems to achieve success and whether or not the W7 phone expected to be released later this year will be successful and help make them a player in the mobile market.
