Nothing quite beats an aircraft that can engage with a remote stand off from AWACS targeting and remain out of sight!
I recall a firepower demo that the A10 used to do in Warminster, They used to routinely fly it up a valley to take out dummy targets against real small arms fire.

4k Even Worth Bothering With?
I'm sure I read an article, right here on the Reg, that described the effects of delivering intrlaced video streams yada yada yada, that led me to decide - at least for me, that, "who gives a toss about 4K!" Was I wrong to think that, or does the whole raft of security on top mean it will just end up getting skipped over? I suppose as long as the consumer does not feel the bite, (which does not seem likely if non players have to license that tech) then they might give a monkeys.
As for me wanting 4k on my tablet? I doubt my eyes can tell the difference my my nexus 7 screen!!
I suppose "they" will make money as long as they persuade punters they need a 4k telly ?
Someone correct me if I was wrong to think "who gives a toss about 4k, " I'll run out and but a 4k set immediately!!
oh not to mention that "their" fabulous security plans have not fared too well in recent launches of ... er anything that I can think of.

Re: tablets - whats the point
I read books on mine, so I don't have to carry around lumping great paperbacks.
Also do my time recording in the office, which I export to excel sheets for my timesheets.
but aside from that and email and music and the occasional game and portable browsing (on a decent sized screen), and google navigation and a notepad that syncs with my pc and phone and tablet and dropbox sync for important data files and mangler or mumble to chat to mates across the world and netflix and bbc iplayer and ..... nah that's it, you are right, its good for nothing I should throw it in the bin immediately!!
Australia to issue passports for males, females and... X
You don't understand the need?
Neither do I. Why, in an enlightened and non discriminatory society does the gender of a passport holder have any bearing on their right to hold a passport at all?
Its the same as the job applications that say "we are an equal opportunities employer but please tell me if you are a black man"
Who gives a monkey's f?????? left nut what gender box fits? I don't and I'm reasonably sure most of us (meaning you) don't either. Sure I think its unusual for a guy to dress like a girl and want to be though of as female, but that's my problem, Maybe I should stop expecting to look at all women to see how attractive I think they may be And that right there Illustrates exactly what I mean.
Just drop the dumb need to categorise people into gender, race, age, etc etc.

anything passing from hand to hand (or .... eeeww mouth) in the lodge, is lodge (rolled up trouser leg ) business and does not constitute bribery of any kind. Rather its better to think of it as Lodge Love, the brotherly sharing of cash, ladies and expensive booze.

I served in the Army
Trust me, the army knows how to deal with angry youths. Its been doing that for a very long time. Its mostly about changing habit through the time honoured and accepted method of - keeping you so knackered that you have little energy left at the end of the day for rebellious though, let alone action. Before you know it, you are voluntarily polishing your mess tins for inspection.
Ok so I was a volunteer but there were guys in my platoon who were offered the Army or far less pleasant alternatives (by a magistrate I think). I don't think it was widespread, but he was from Manchester, who I think invented angry : )
But I am opinionated and from Scotland so WTF do I know eh ? actually since I'm from Scotland I could probably leave out the opinionated :)
Courts?
Because they have demonstrated a rational response: 6 moths for a bottle of water? 4 years for inciting riot (while the hook did it every day for years with no penalty) that had no discernible effects, while MPs simply walk away from stealing from public coffers via expenses? I think the example to the public has been set at the highest levels.
And it was not just the unemployed taking part, there were educated, employed people, joining in the frolics.
Excusing them? no not in the least, but with everything else that has been happening I find it difficult to condemn outright.

I'm rich and laughing all the way to the wank, sorry bank.
Lawyer School anyone
Hmm I think I should cast aside my morals and attend law school. The only people winning in the ludicrous patent laws are the amoral lawyers running their cases. They must be laughing all the way to the bank where they have a lunch (with their equally amoral banking buddies) of small taiwanese children dipped in the blood of refugees, washed down with a nice sancere.
OK I admit it, I'm pissed at myself for being only a mildly successful IT contractor who sleeps well and has never screwed a colleague or partner over to make a few more pennies. I've met plenty of them and often wondered why they get where they do.
I would love some of that big cash bonus action - I'm just not prepared to become the kind of arsehole that gets there.
Can I get through law school before these morons burn each other out and make my fortune? Should I even try? I mean telly's are going for free all across the country right? With luck like mine and late entry to the fray, I'd probably be left with an old SCART cable and get 15 years for it!!
Malware mints virtual currency using victim's GPU
you spotted that too
Wonder what rate of mhash(es) my i7 970 extreme can get?
Still won't be as high as a GPU.
Anyway this report is a bit behind the times, it suggests that GPU is the way forward from now. Miners have been using the GPU for some time, the new bit is the botnet controllers are using their network to mine isn't it?

The curse of Google?: Android licensees fail to cash in
Windows is our own fault
I'm not a fan or naysayer of MS. Anyone who has delivered software in a commercial environment knows they actually do a decent job of getting working stuff onto computers for the majority of people to use.
Stop right there Mr Linux superiority complex :) I use Linux at home and unix at work, I know what ACLs and role based permissions and real limited accounts are, Win 7 does not. However I can't play the majority of games I like to play on linux - I've looked at the wine premium services and the idea of trying to get a new MMO or FPS working chokes me on the spot. So unless my current contract is going to pay me to work out how to host BFBC2 on vmware VMs then I'm not going to be trying to do anything like it at home anytime soon.
Long story short, windows is most definitely shit and inferior to *nix but its that way because the vast majority of users (myself included) do not want to spend their leisure time getting the PC to work at all!! So windows is our (own) fault
Why Should A Consumer Display Brand Loyalty
WTF, I paid for you fucking product and now I have to stay with you and buy the next 3 slight variations? Fuck off - I'm off to buy an iPhone.
Alright the last bit was a lie, as in never in a million years or not even if you gave me one kind of lie.
But for Vendors to suggest that consumers somehow owe them loyalty is ludicrous.
MAKE BETTER SHIT THAN YOUR COMPETITORS and you will sell more!! or just do what jobs does and make shit, but tell everyone its the mutts nuts and you sell more than anyone else!!
Amazon Free Apps start to rile developers
The whole patent trolling pisses me off
How the chuff can patent offices grant a patent on something for which there is not prototype or working model of any kind. It happens all the time and a lot of the patent wars now taking place are for patents issued years ago, before it was even feasible to build the products in question.
It seems all the big companies are at it at the hardware and software levels and i also hear recently that the drug companies are playing similar games with relation to cures/drugs and methods that could save lives.
Am I missing something? are the patent offices just a bunch of fuckwits or is there a genuine purpose in allowing companies to patent something they cannot build for another 20 years? I though a patent was to protect your IP or product? Surely it makes sense that for a patent to be granted it has to have at least a demonstrable working prototype.
Someone fill in the big picture for me - ços all I can see is cynical, big corporate law getting away with it because they can.
Developer Class Action
There can't be any basis in law for that can there? Or does the contract provide them the facility to do what they feel like?
21a. The agent, retains the right to sell or distribute the product via any medium it chooses and at any price it deigns to set. The developer retains the right and privilege to go fuck themselves in any way they can and with any implement they choose (see Amazon store for suitable implements).
Seems to me they are getting too big, if you have ever had any dealings with companies who sell to the big uk supermarkets, this is exactly how they treat their suppliers. they are just so big and powerful they can set the, price and pace to suit them.

Doom guy: tablets, phones to be gaming platforms of the future
Current Gen Consoles
That's current gen consoles, since consoles take a long time to develop and have a life of, what, 7 years approx before a new one is due?
That means that the PS3 is not due a successor till 2014?
The PS3 was an order more powerful that the PS2 so its probably fair to say that the PS4? will be an order more powerful than the PS3
PC Add in boards are released to the public in small increments, but that's not how the technology advances, it makes a nice big jump. We, the consumers only get small increments so the hardware developers get a nice ROI. eg my ATI 5970 is better than the newer 6x series, but you can be sure that by the time the series has run its life it will have better boards etc.
So what ? Well consoles have to implement hardware and then they are stuck with it for the life of the console, no upgrades, just improvements in software use of the hardware, so its inevitable that other, newer technologies will catch up to a degree.
If we never see another console then I think its true that mobile devices will catch up. But the next console out will kick that back to touch.
The comparison does not take future console plans into account, so IMO, its a bit invalid.
However they could still be dominant for things like on-live, because delivering on-live on a nice fast tablet with decent video playback will work fine, probably just as fine as your PC (albeit without the 30 inch monitor - until wearing goggles is not too geeky) but that's not the same thing as mobiles beating up consoles.
Virgin Media blames Activision for Call of Duty lag problems
Steam ? you're Reamed
Hear hear on Steam, I've always hated it and when IU tried to fire up BC2 last weekend for a quick go and got to yet another black screen, I removed it and steam and every other steam game from my pc.
Maybe if I need and FPS fix I'll need to get an XBox or PS3, I'll probably keep my PC too in the hope the the MMO genre gets a grip too.
I don't think its really about any particular developer, ISP or drivers, it because the bandwagon went from a fairly small trailer like affair to a hug train very quickly which mean some stuff just gets pushed out before its ready (as in stable or fully tested) in order to be viable in a busy market place.
The only way to stop it, or get it improved, is for gamers to hold onto their cash before spunking it on the next FPS clone, only to find its just the same as the last 3(0) they bought.
I've been guilty of it also, I like a good FPS as much as they next person.
Back to UT 2003 anyone ?
no it isn't
Current "throttling" tehcniques involve rejecting a certain number of packets at whatever bandwidth your connection is at. This is for 2 reasons that I can see. 1. it works 2. gives an element of plausible deniability - "we're not throttling or slowing down your service" <we are just rejecting a % of your traffic, with some invisible algorithm that we can remove quickly so it looks like it was never there and it look to you like bad network service>
So throttling like that impacts everything regardless of the bandwidth you actually have.
