Virgin downs 1and1 and Germany

VM problem?

I didn't have any problems yesterday, though I don't play WoW or use any 1and 1 services :P

I've seen routing issues in the past though... even identified the problem via a few traceroutes from my own and my neighbours Virgin Media net connections and reported to Virgin tech support... after being transferred around various departments the monkey didn't even know what a traceroute was and denied all knowledge of the problem!

On top of that, I haven't had a landline for 3-4 months... they were due to send an engineer who arrived BEFORE the agreed time before leaving. Further phone calls resulted in idiots with severely lacking english skills who are clearly reading from a script.

Might try again this weekend but I'll be damned if I'm plugging yet another handset into my line, booking ANOTHER engineer, taking ANOTHER day off work without pay, and having an engineer not turn up or post the "You aren't in" note and leg it without even knocking. Virgin Media's cable internet is great.. everything else is a complete farce in my experience.

RE: http://www.cheap-cigarettes.co.za/

"Congratulation sir, you are super fantastic winner of Zimbabwe lottery for lifetime supplying of 419 brand cigarette-ings. In order to send your prize we need you sort code and bank account numbaaah..."

What I'm really waiting for is the license to buy licenses to do stuff... :-p

Accuracy...

The Beeb (who admittedly posted it first) can't seem to get their facts straight: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6943385.stm

While they quote the defaced text specifically they still seem to think the message is "accusing the US and Israel of killing children"... So reassuring to know the BBC check their facts so thoroughly... even more reassuring to know that I don't fund towards this crap by buying a TV license!

Peterborough bloke warned over 'offensive' t-shirt

Offensive T-Shirts

Anyone remember the first story of this nature from a few years ago? Black metal band Cradle of Filth printed a t-shirt with a masturbating nun and the slogan "Jesus is a C**t"... resulted in a "ban" on offensive t-shirts for a brief spell however the band cleverly tried to justify the slogan by saying that "devout Christians consider themself born through jesus, and as c**t is a slang word for something pretty obvious involving giving birth the slogan is technically correct... in a longwinded, somewhat pointless way.

Anyway, isn't "offensive" purely a matter of personal opinion? I personally would giggle at silly £2-off-the-market-doodled-by-a-two-year-old slogan t-shirts, but a single coloured branded t-shirt that cost over £100 would offend my wallet and cause emotional distress, i'd have to cross the road quickly to avoid being passively converted to a chav... possibly resulted in me getting run over through running away from sheer terror and blind panic at the offensive t-shirt being worn in my general presence. Should the wearer be made to remove the offending garment?

No, course not. (cue "only if its a woman with huge jugs" in the replies!)

linkage

Not the first case I mentioned in my earlier post but it's the same t-shirt... blah blah

RE: So?

To the anonymous coward:

You doom-mongering git, why don't you go bury yourself and stop spouting your despressive, socially-inept twoddle all over this article? With an attitude like yours I'm surprised YOU haven't been made extinct by just about anyone unfortunate enough to be in the same country as you! Funnier still, you seem to take pleasure in the fact that you're a shallow, antisocial and dumbfuck with as much consideration for your fellow man as America has for personal privacy! Either that or you must assume that everything respawns just like in whichever MMORPG you got your life & debating skils from.

I'd suggest you get out into the world (big blue & green room outside, just beyond the entrance to the underground bunker you must be locked in) sometime and experience it while you can.

My own opinion on how we [humanity] are treating this planet and this article? Simple: Mother Nature has bigger teeth and one day it *will* bite back without a doubt... until then lets not do anything else to provoke it.

On another note, can I have all your money/bank details/possessions etc? You *will* lose them/give it all away/die one day so whats the point in you holding on to them when its easier to stop caring now and just hand them over... "like it or lump it".

Counter-counterpoint...

George, opening your post with sarcasm then slating everyones contribution while contributing nothing uselful yourself is one of the reason noone takes naysayers like you seriously.

Allow me to take your attitude for a second: are you a politician?

Radiators...

Thanks for answering the radiator one, Greg.

You're right about human hearing: children can hear a wider range of sound frequencies than adults with the high and low frequencies gradually fading away with age. If you recall health checkups at school one involved wearing headphones and signalling when you can no longer hear a rising scale of notes... repeat the test 10 years later and you'll probably stop a few notes earlier. This range is around 20-20000Hz according to most sources I've seen so I'm not sure how wifi running at 2.4GHz would cause problems to people considering dogs' hearing goes up to 60000Hz and our eyeballs don't explode every time a farmer uses his doggy whistle ;)

Radiation?

Guess I'd better get rid of the hot metal pipe things in my house... they're commiting the sin known as "radiation" by radiating heat. It's their job, they're radiators.

That box in the corner that makes noise and goes crackly if u pull out the metal-wire-leading-to-the-roof? It's receiving radiation and pumping it back out as light, sound and Big Brother. Bin it. Ah, the other crackly box in the other corner that only has voices coming from it? You know, the one that kept so many people during WW2, allowed the world to communicate long distance and is so taken for granted? Get rid of it, more radiation.

Or just get rid of the common factor: idiot journalists with no facts preaching to even thicker peons who believe anything they're told. By the way, dogs now have 2 rear ends, grass is purple and it rains Opal Fruits.

I wonder how many people have stopped to consider that the nausea and headaches "caused by <insert electronic device> radiation" is actually due to self-induced stress, and the "lethargy" (ahem, more like apathy) is just an excuse for their lack of understanding.
