Re: The 4 stages of security response

completely agree with you. Embedded systems never consider security they consider functionality. In this case it does not matter that pilots can overide tampering of aircraft controls its the fact that they can be altered that will distract pilots and thus cause accidents. For a more detailed explanation of this problem and respomse from pilots see http://arstechnica.com/security/2013/04/hacking-commercial-aircraft-with-an-android-app-some-conditions-apply/

Parking ticket firm 'exposed private info' - ICO making enquiries

It Sucks

These services should be returned to the public sector or better still local authorities should receive enough money from central government to have to not rely on "parking fees" to finance their services. The whole system of using public or private companies to obtain revenue sucks from start to finish. Think it was Lord Prescott we should than for this situation.

Hold on! Degrees for all doesn't mean great jobs for all, say profs

Privatised Education

I think this just blows the whole criteria for charging students fees for degree courses. You have no guarantee of earning more money if you obtain a degree.

As the privatisation of higher education is likely to continue I suggest that fees for engineering (Computer/mechanical/electrical) are reduced to zero, and subjects like say english, journalism, politics, History of art and other eclectic subjects be doubled. We might start to produce graduates who are useful to the economy rather than useless overpaid media types.

New rules to end cries of 'WTF... a £10 online booking fee?'

Syntax Error
Stop

The Whole Piint

of paying by debit/credit card is to primarily help the retailer get sell products and services. It is now carte blanche to charge extra for these services. Perhaps the real problem are the charges from the banks to the retailers. Why should you they be able to charge 50p or whatever for a transaction as they ultimately get the money in their accounts and can do what they want with it.

I think this change of regulation is indirectly there to help the poor old banks re-capitalise for some reason and the retailer can amke a profit as well!

When you buy a cinema ticket or whatever how do you know how much the retailer is being charged by the bank?

Trouble for Mr Webb is how much is an aerial picture actually worth?

Not 1500 quid to most people.

He just needs to find a new area of photography or more likely he is over-reacting. Perhaps he should wait till he starts loosing clients because of the change of law.

He could perhaps photo to order rather than just go out and take photos with the copter and try and flog them afterwards.

That square QR barcode on the poster? Check it's not a sticker

Syntax Error

Re: Devil's Advocate

The answer is to stop using QR codes.

Firstly I can read a URL but I can't read a QR code.

Secondly I know which web sites I have bookmarked - thanks.

Thirdly I don't have time or the inclination like most users or luxury of using a VM so I cant kill off my system if it gets infected by malware. .

QR codes are just another gimmick from the marketing world and hopefully die off together with tiny urls

Re: sacked for making dodgy Facebook posts

But hold on a minute. If you are not at work you can say what you want about work.

You are allowed to hate your job or your employer. There is no law against it.

This ruling greys the area between home and work. I know in the USA employers don't like their employees having holidays but trawling through Facebook twitter etc or more likely another employee reported the guy to his boss is just plain wrong.

Windows 8 to ship with built-in malware protection

Syntax Error

Difficult to Answer

As Windows 8 is not out, depends what you mean by "productively" as DesqView and DOS 5 are so ancient I have serious problem knowing what you could with such OSs. You would certainly have a problem using the internet unless you just like text. I don't think there is a web browser You would only be able to connect to the internet via SLIP or PPP.

I doubt you could record sound.

Printing colour would be very difficult. Inserting pictures into text documents? Possible but not easy. .Creating web pages would be tricky. No web browser.

You wouldn't be able to make a powerpoint presentation.

Modern PCs and OSs make people far more productive certainly in work. Ask any Secretary or PA.

Your whole set up sounds eccentric. If you have been using it for donkeys years and it satisfies your requirements then good for you. You cannot enjoy the pleasures of 21st century web browsing, video, music and other what you call non-productive tasks, but then maybe you don't want to,

'Leccy price hike: Greens to blame as well as energy biz

Simple Answer

Government sets the price of gas and electricity. Competition (free market) has failed. If they want to give people money for solar panels etc they can pay for it out of the fairest tax income tax. Saving the planet is naive.

The only countries which are really affected by increased CO2 and a warmer planet causing unpredictable climate are China and India and that is because they are overpopulated and have many people to feed.

Porridge for Ofcom IT boss in £500k software fraud

Unbelievable

That the head of IT of a Civil Service department can be allowed to flog hardware and software licenses to his department like he is a private company. This is totally unethical. This looks like very poor management by OFCOM .

BT, TalkTalk in court seeking axe for Digital Economy Act

Syntax Error

Good for BT and Talk Talk

Intellectual property is the responsibility of the "Creators" not ISPs, Government or anyone else. Its their "property". They need to look after it better and control the distribution of their properly. Not sit on their backsides claiming they are loosing billions of £ $ and expect everyone from the Government downwards to bend over backwards to protect their "wealth"

They cannot prove their losses. Lazy so and sos.

However, I am suprised at BT taking this action. Surely it is their interest to have the Digital Economy law in place as it would strengthen their Vision Box service. Why pay £3 or £4 VOD charge for the movie Inception if you can download it Peer-peer for nowt!!

Doctors warn on patient data

Syntax Error
WTF?

Protecting Doctors

Its difficult to understand the fuss about patient confidentiality. Who's really interested in these records apart from the patient and immediate family?

Generally speaking putting patient records on a database is very sensible. When a patient is admitted to hospital or they visit a GP their records are immediately accessible to every hospital and GP in the country.

People do not worry about which bank employee has access to their bank records so what is the fuss about medical records?

I think its more about Doctors protecting what they write about patients from patients. Patient confidentiality is a smoke screen for Doctors to protect themselves.
