Adobe spies on readers: EVERY DRM page turn leaked to base over SSL

Re: Re:Railo vs ColdFusion

Agreed, took around 50 man hours for me to migrate all the sites as the original relied on stored procedures in SQL Server and some SQL Server quirks that dont work in MySQL. Not deployed a site on Railo / MariaDB as yet but definitely work a look at some point.

This was outside my day job which doesnt touch CF / CFML at all now so not had an opportunity since.

Re: How does Adobe stay in business?

Railo is a fine alternative to ColdFusion, performed a full server migration on it a while back for a small web company migrating 5 of its sites over from Windows/SQL Server/ColdFusion to Linux/MySQL/Railo. Works faster, fewer hacking events (even after fully patching and updating IIS there were still attacks on it) and, of course, license / hosting fees all got reduced.

Doesnt have all the features of ColdFusion (or didnt 6 months ago - not been on it apart from a few fixes here and there and some linux scheduling to backup / clear log files) but has most that an e-commerce / CMS site could need.

Major Freeview EPG revamp to go ahead after appeals rejected

Yup as the other poster mentioned this will be a regional issue possibly caused by a relay transmitter or a transmitter not broadcasting a network ID.

Happened to me using a mythTV system (I know, I know I deserve it) dug into it and it turned out there was no networkid for the channels in question. Once play around with the database later and I had EPG data but (A) how would you do that with a non PC based system and (B) WHY should you have to?

Sky confirms UK Online closure

Another reason to dislike Sky

I had the 24mb llu service (16-19 due to my distance from exchange). I can honestly say its the best service I had from a uk provider. Apart from a couple of scheduled outages (at 2-3am so I'll forgive them) and some router issues the service didnt hiccough even under high load (I develop web application service from home and often have to pull down little ditties like windows 7 from MSDN)

The technical support was uk based and first-rate every time unlike the medical waste that was Demon internet technical support by the time I left them in 2009.

Sad, very sad, to see a quality service go and fall to the lowest common denominator / worst service for highest cost Sky empire. The staff were even honest enough to tell me that they wouldnt suggest reproviding when I moved recently in order to save me hassle changing over in the new place, first class support to the last.

May I suggest for anyone trying to decide on Skys offer who doesnt want to line their pockets more, or register an Infinitesimal sign of disapproval, picks Be Broadband (if the LLU service is available in your area). Their support is yet to be proven but, so far, the connection seems stable and fast.

Bye bye UK Online we'll miss you...

re IR lights

I can see the idea here (no pun intended) but would bouncing large doses of IR into the viewers eyeballs possibly cause damage? Bright light is bright light regardless of whether its visible?

Meego goes 3D

mmm... I hate to say it but augmented reality

That and in-handset sat-nav are the only reasons I can see for it beyond gaming. My N95 had - at the time - a rather spiffy 3d engine but being the sort who doesnt need or want to play games anywhere except home I didnt really use them. My Nokie 5800 has no usable 3d I can see (maps does 3d-ish but is pointless in the car unless you want a close up and personal view of a lamppost since you were looking at the widdly screen).

Although I, again, am not a user I believe augmented reality (awful buzzword bingo term) may be a hot seller in the teen-something crowd and 3d may be useful to overlay augmented 3d information (and possibly commercial 'messages') to the user. I also expect geotagged augmented reality overlayed text messages to be dropped off and picked up depending on your location at some point if its not already in someones specifications sheet.
