Apple to end AT&T's iPhone exclusive?

Tony Smith, Editor, Reg Hardware (Written by Reg staff)

Re: Seek and ye shall find.....

This page shows you which world carriers will sell you an iPhone that's unlocked.

This is not useful for everyone, of course, but I got my unlocked 3GS from Apple itself. In Australia, Apple's own stores sell unlocked handsets. Buy one from a local carrier and it will be locked, but not if purchased from the manufacturer.

Ofcom opens debate on Freeview HD DRM to punters

Tony Smith, Editor, Reg Hardware (Written by Reg staff)

Re: Alienating iPod owners?

Except that iPods used Apple's FairPlay for video DRM - music is unprotected - and Apple refuses to licence FairPlay.

That means the BBC will have to tell set-top box makers they need to put Windows Media in their machines, which will leave iPod owners out in the cold.

Re: No SD Card, no Problem.

SD isn't proprietary - anyone can license the spec and use it. Ditto HD DVD while it was still worth doing so.

I have a Sony camera that uses Memory Stick - every other gadget I use has an SD card slot. MS only works if you buy Sony kit and no one else's.

Re: 8 year olds use mobiles?

Most eight-year-olds have phones because their parents like to be able to reach them when they need to.

This notion that before phones, computer games and TV kids used wander around gazing at nature in pie-eyed wonder is pure nonsense.

I didn't do this when I was eight, and no one else I know did. That was before computers, phones etc. All we had were bikes.

Prysm pitches ultra-green laser telly tech

Tony Smith, Editor, Reg Hardware (Written by Reg staff)

Re: sounds great but...

There's no reason to assume LPDs won't be flat. CRTs are big because of the electron gun assembly and beam control magnets. Guiding a light beam - perhaps fired vertically then angled onto the phosphor using a controlled reflector - requires a lot less gubbins.

Best in class for HomePlug AV-standard devices.

At top speed, the Belkins are not HomePlug AV-compliant. If you want compatibility, they will fall back to AV speeds, but are not as quick as the Devolos.

Re: NetBook killer also?

The key word you use is 'viewing'. I know Intel and PC vendors like to insist that netbooks are solely for viewing content, but rather a lot of us journos use them for creating too.

I wrote stacks of CES 2008 stories and edited pictures on an Eee PC 701. Tricky, yes, but I did it, and it sure beat lugging a 15in laptop (my main machine at the time) around.

Apple's tablet may work well - especially if equipped with updated Newton tech - for taking notes, but I very much doubt it'll do Gimp/Photoshop.

Netbook killer? Nah.

These are recommendations for readers looking for a Windows Mobile handset. We've done a similar piece for readers after an Android phone - http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2009/12/02/koy_2009_android/ - and we'll do other varieties too.

Personally, I'm not a WM fan, but a fair few Reg readers are and can't be ignored.

Acer Aspire 1810TZ

Tony Smith, Editor, Reg Hardware

@Neil Barnes

I briefly ran the Ubuntu 9.10 live disc, and can verify that Wi-Fi works fine - it often doesn't on netbooks, at least not out of the box. But I didn't look at other kit, such as the memory card reader, webcam or ethernet.

If I get a mo, I'll try these out and report back.

However, I did notice the fan seems to spin up rather more than it does under Windows 7. There may be a dedicated kernel to fix this, however.

Lite-on ETDU108 slim DVD drive

Apple's mini DisplayPort added to Vesa standard

Tony Smith, Editor, Reg Hardware (Written by Reg staff)

@Ed

DisplayPort technically isn't royalty free - it's just that Vesa isn't charging for it. However, it may do so in the future, though having established a precedent, starting to charge licence fees and royalties may prove difficult.

Why give it away in the first place? To encourage computer makers to use DP instead of HDMI. This doesn't appear to be working too well.

Toyota preps plug-in Prius for mass production

Tony Smith, Editor, Reg Hardware (Written by Reg staff)

Re. 18-mile range

Bear in mind this is a hybrid, so the range isn't as relevant as it is in a pure leccy like the Tesla. The PHEV Prius basically gets you a bigger battery than the regular Prius has, and gives you the opportunity to charge it before you set off.

It doesn't grind to a halt after 18 miles - that's just the distance it'll go before the petrol engine kicks in to drive the vehicle while the battery recharges. Having the leccy sub-system about raising the effective mpg rating rather than eliminating petrol altogether.

BTW, the conventional Prius' battery will take you 2-3 miles on a charge.

UK DVD sales plunge...

@serviceWithASmile

A plagiarist is someone who passes someone else's work off as their own, but you're right, my computer's Thesaurus app says synonyms include 'pirate' and 'copyright infringer'.

Interestingly - to me, at any rate - 'plagiarism' derives from the early 17th Century. It's from Latin plagiarius meaning ‘kidnapper’, itself from plagium ‘a kidnapping’, in turn from the Greek plagion.

@AC Re. Price

The price we publish in the panel is the recommended retail price or equivalent, which we quote so that buyers can more readily assess what discount they're getting from a given supplier.

As Simon mentioned in the paragraph before his Verdict, £50 is what you'll typically pay if you shop around. But you may pay more - or less.
