Money from apps? It's all about Apple iOS, says survey

baryonic

Re: Of course $0 revenue apps are on Android

To be allowed to submit apps to Google Play, developers must pay a one-time $25 US registration fee. It is not "free".

Both Google Play and the App Store pay developers 70% of the app's earned revenue.

Re: Lightning

"The trouble with the Lightning socket on my iPhone 5 is that it is a little narrow deep hole that filled up with the detritus of my pockets and then stopped working after a year."

Your belly button must be a sight to behold…

Re: Lightning

I can do it blindfolded using my left hand, first time every time. Are you sure you're alright, old chap?

Apple Mac Pro: It's a death star, not a nappy bin, OK?

Re: Maybe they need a "surround" at the base.

Just a further note: At 7 teraflops, the new Mac Pro would have easily made the top500.org's November 2007 list of the fastest 500 supercomputers in the world.

Re: Apple Cube 2

There is no price premium for the new Mac Pro. See posts in this thread discussing this system's price. And if performance and noise are important to you, this is clearly your system.

Re: Maybe they need a "surround" at the base.

A "bit more powerful" than a Cray-1? At 7 teraflops, the new Mac Pro is 87,500 times faster than the original 80 megaflop Cray-1. I'm not joking.

Apple iPad Mini 8in tablet review

baryonic

@Maxson: I don't think the review admitted that the iPad mini is either "overpriced" or "underspecced," Maxson. I think it admitted that it was the most desirable product overall in its class.

In any case, it would have been a clear error to state or imply that the device was "underspecced" when, in fact, it's the best spec'd and by far the best performing device in its class.

Re: My diagnosis....bad value for money

Hmm...let's see...

GPS built-in on the 4G LTE model

Additional external storage rarely needed given the 64 GB built-in option along with transparent iCloud support

Display rated overall superior to the Nexus 7's by DisplayMate Technologies latest comparative display tests

"higher spec Android tablet" -- There are no higher spec'd Android tablets.

Good try though, Mickey.

Re: Say it isn't so

You're ignoring the fact that the iPad mini is an 8" 4:3 device, not a 7" 16:9 device like almost all Android-based tablets. That apparently small change makes for a display that is 35% larger in area.

I hope that clears up your confusion.

Re: Using it as a camera?

Actually, Psyx, it has excellent camera functionality for both stills and video and includes ergonomic features like touch to focus, face detection, automatic realtime stabilization in video mode, and automatic location data. It also provides instant photo display, photo sharing, and built-in basic editing functions. All in all, no point-and-shoot compact camera comes close.

Re: "Apple has launched an overpriced and under-specced turkey"

Not true, Anonymous Coward. The iPad mini is a mere 18 mm wider than the Nexus 7. In any case, the iPad mini is much lighter and much thinner than the Nexus 7.

baryonic

Re: Sheltered Life

Your £270 gets you a display that is 35% larger and rated more highly than the Nexus 7's by DisplayMate Technologies: http://www.displaymate.com/iPad_mini_ShootOut_1.htm

Re: Couldn't Happen To A Nicer Company

Why comment about something you clearly no nothing about, Anonymous Coward?

GPS is included on the 4G LTE version. Apple Maps is a significant advance over Google Maps and is a pleasure to use, providing greater speed, clarity, superior data presentation, and much better offline capability. That "rubbish" 4:3 display panel was rated more highly overall than that of the Nexus 7 in a comparative test by DisplayMate Technologies (Dr. Ray Soneira) and its aspect ratio provides much better overall usability and comfort in addition to 35% larger screen area. And regarding your stupidest assertion, i.e. that the iPad mini's CPU/GPU is "mediocre" by Nexus 7 standards, you need to read the latest comparative performance test by anandtech.com. When you do, you'll note that the iPad mini's "mediocre" CPU/GPU blows that of the Nexus 7--and every other Android device--into the weeds. The only mobile devices that outperform he iPad mini are Apple's A6-based models.

baryonic

Re: Sheltered Life

That "out of date device" blows the doors off he latest and greatest from the Android camp--including the Nexus 10--in terms of performance. See the latest performance comparison tests done by anandtech.com.

Apple snags blockbuster multi-touch patent

baryonic

Re: Douglas Adams : Genius

"On a windows machine, there is CTR/ALT/DEL. Is that not 'multi-touch' ?...Madness. Utter f#*!ing madness."

Oh, it's much worse than that! I mean, think about it--have people not been using fingers for a long time? Have they not touched things with them, even simultaneously? Did not at least some of those touched things react to said touch?

It's absolutely outrageous that Apple could patent "multi-touch"! Have they and the USPTO no shame?

baryonic

Re: Over to you

I'm fairly certain that a lot of patents make use of the wheel, even though the applicant didn't invent the wheel. Should they therefore be rejected?

baryonic

Re: Hang on, though

Wrong--Apple did design and engineer the screens.

baryonic

Re: Damn you America

"I dont think a patent should be allowed for natural use of the human body"

It isn't. It's about the unnatural reaction of a made object and its virtual elements to the natural use of the human body.

Apple MacBook Air 11in Core i5 notebook

baryonic

That would be true if Apple used ordinary LiPoly batteries and charging technolgies for its built-in batteries, but it doesn't.

From Apple's page on batteries: "Your new Apple notebook features advanced battery chemistry that greatly extends the battery’s lifespan. The built-in battery of your MacBook, MacBook Pro or MacBook Air is designed to deliver up to 1,000 full charge and discharge cycles before it reaches 80 percent of its original capacity. In addition, Adaptive Charging reduces the wear and tear on the battery giving it a lifespan of up to 5 years."

baryonic

Apple's new notebook batteries have a much longer cycle life than normal replaceable batteries--at about 1,000, about 3 times the number of cycles. I suspect the battery will last as long as the machine itself...

Apple MacBook mid-2010

baryonic

Keep up

It seems you're not as attuned to the Mac universe as you think you are: As it turns out, free blowjobs *are* a built-in function of the MacBook!

And, as far as WiFi is concerned, the MacBook provides full 4-protocol (a/b/g/n) support. Contrary to your implication, that is definitely not a garden variety feature.

BTW, how many $850 notebooks also provide Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, optical audio I/O, NVIDIA GeForce 320M GPU (or equivalent), LED screen backlighting, 10 hour, long life battery, and multi-touch trackpad along with the usual benefits of buying a Mac (iLife, etc.)?
