Apple vs Bank of China in iPad Shanghai showdown

CmdrX3

Re: Hmm

No it's not really up to one Proview unit to sue the other. If my son sells my car without my permission to someone, and I say "oiii hang on a sec, that's my car, he didn't have permission to sell it... I want it back". I don't sue my son, I get the police to return my car and it's up to the purchaser of the car to sue my son for his money back. Obviously things are a little more complicated than that and that's a very basic analogy.

Personally though as regards to Proview and Apple, I could care less either way. I don't plan on buying an iPad so whether they are available or not affects me not one jot.

Why bother, the man has been the most ineffectual President the US has seen in a while, probably on a par with Carter. Once you get past being the first black US President and getting Bin Laden (although he probably had little to do with that other than giving the go ahead) what have you left. Gitmo is still operational, the banks still got their money and no accountability for it, the Health Care bill was so watered down and concessioned to death that it's practically useless. Quite frankly his rally cry for his next campaign should be "No we didn't".

Sadly, the US is now likely to get some Republican lunatic (probably Mitt Romney) as the next President, although to be fair he seems to be a good bit less loony than Bush, Boener, Palin, McCain or indeed 75% of the other GOP representatives.

LOHAN's flying truss: One orb or two?

CmdrX3

Sidewinder missile style (except vertical)

What about one single balloon in the centre of the platform with the avionics and camera where they are. At the tip of the platform a vertical launch guide rail and at the opposite tip a counterbalance. Not sure of the width of a fully inflated balloon but even so, placed at the tip of the platform it would allow the launch trajectory to be reduced and more vertical.

Yes you could, if you had applied for it. There would also be absolutely nothing RB could do about it. As it would be your own name and you genuinely made porn movies, then the name would not have been registered in bad faith. It's more than likely RB would have had to just suck it up (so to speak)

LOHAN flashes fantastical flying truss

CmdrX3

In regards to horizontal stability

As you are already putting some electronics in there, would it be a big problem adding a tilt sensor connected to a small motor that could move a counterweight back and forward along underneath the length of the platform. I don't really know how much extra weight or power that would require, but it's couldn't be that much

Proview fears fanbois will derail iPad export ban bid

CmdrX3

Re: Here's a thought

Because if they did that an iPad would cost £1999.99 because of the higher wages and they wouldn't have ANY customers for it. Just because it's a US company with US customers doesn't mean they should manufacture them there or any less American because of it. If companies like Toyota, BMW, Sony and the tens of thousands of other non US companies all took the same kind of xenophobic views on manufacturing as you suggest American companies take, the US would be in a hell of a lot worse state than it is now

40,000 Apple fanbois demand ethical iPhone 5

@BillG

I hate to burst your bubble but in general Western society just doesn't care, as long as they get cheaply manufactured goodies of every description, it doesn't stop at Apple and their iPhone users. The average bloke or blokette that walks into their local phone shop or electrical supplier just wants to buy their gadge at the lowest possible price. They couldn't give two monkeys whether their kit was put together by a half starved low paid chinese work slave or by a 9 year old child working 12 hour shifts.... as long as they can get it for £20 cheaper, the conscience generally remains at home. Am I one of those people, yes sadly I am, and I don't have a bit of Apple kit to my name.

TripAdvisor: OK, not all our reviews are trustworthy or real

CmdrX3

Exactly right, if 20 out of 30 people say the food is nice, 5 say it's bloody fantastic and 5 say it's absolutely horrible, I tend to assume that 5 people are very easily pleased, just happened to really enjoy the food, or the owner and his family posted reviews. I would also assume that 5 people got really unlucky the night they visited or just tried the wrong food, or that they the kind of people that nothing would please them. In the above example, I would go with the consensus and be willing to try it out.

I have left several reviews on trip advisor myself, so I know there are definitely genuine reviews, and probably many (if not most) of them are genuine reviews, but as said any review sites should only be used to AID in a decision about something and not the definitive truth about something.

Newt Gingrich wants Moon to be 51st US state

CmdrX3

I'm sure it could be done

While I think its certainly possible I think its highly unlikely. I'm sure there were many who thought it was a bit of a loony idea when JFK made the moon challenge but with determination, the will and lots and lots of money they succeeded. However, in this case it's nothing more than vote catching from a creepy old politician desperate for a bit of power. Shame really as its the sort of thing we really need to happen to progress space exploration further.

More Brits desert high streets to spend £50bn online

CmdrX3

The trouble with your steel box idea though is that unless you have a camera recording what is going on it's too easy to abuse. If you have two deliveries for example, what's to stop the second driver from nicking your first package and blaming the original driver, or for them to use the code then not put the parcel in the box. They simply need to say they delivered it and the customer is trying it on. Now I'm stop saying delivery drivers are thieves, as I used to be one myself and like in any other job they are normal honest people, but also like any other job there is always a few bad apples.

Well for a start...

It would make all those I'm a Mac, I'm a PC ads look a bit stupid and pointless (even though they were anyway). On top of that you have a shed load of Apple users who would rather have their toenails pulled out with a pair of pliers rather than admit to owning a "PC" when in actual fact what they own is a "Mac" or a "Macbook" or an "Air", etc and what they most definitely don't have is a "PC". Basically it's just something that's stuck over the years and to be honest it works perfectly well. you either have a PC which can run Windows, Linux, OSX and god knows what else and you have an [Insert Apple band name here] which can run OSX, Windows and I don't know what else as I don't have or want one.

I don't know about TeleAtlas

but I wouldn't bother submitting any changes to Navteq via their "map reporter". I submitted quite a few changes to them including a two way road that was categorised as a one way. A pedestrian only road (with no through route) that was marked as a normal road. An alleyway at the side of a house that was marked as a road and a road that was separated in the middle by a fence, and a largish gulley with a river running through it that was marked as a normal connected road (even though it's never been connected). Of the dozen or so changes I submitted nearly two years ago, they have completed only two changes which was to add an Iceland supermarket and remove a petrol station from the POI's. To this day the rest are still "In Process". Needless to say, I didn't bother wasting my time submitting any more.

If they are taken to the small claims court which they likely would be as the value is only $2500 then it will probably be the smarts of the judge and not the greenbacks that decide the outcome. Besides, for the piddling amount of money that it is in the grand scheme of Fleabay/Praypal income I hardly think they would attempt to bribe or coerce a small claims court judge into finding in their favour, and given the facts as they "appear" to be, then any judge with at least relatively modest smarts would find for the seller.

Microsoft de-cloaks Windows 8 push-button lifesaver

Well a fully updated Windows 7 backup system image with a few extra apps takes up about 17GB and takes about 10 minutes to re-image a hard drive at which point I would usually update everything and do a new backup image which takes 15 to 20 minutes. Considerably less than the 3+ hours it takes the normal way). With drives the size they are nowadays, it's not exactly occupying all the space. There may be easier ways to do it with Acronis or something that take up less space but for me it works and it works well.

I imagine that Windows 8 will take up around the same give or take a GB or two.

Is The Gadget Show still on? Anytime I view the timeslot it used to be on there seems to be an hour long iPhone advert on instead. Funny thing is, it's the same people in the iPhone advert that used to do The Gadget Show. Oh well, maybe they'll bring a new gadget program out that concentrates on gadgets rather than things the iPhone/iPad can do, things the iPhone/iPad can control, things that fit onto the iPhone/iPad, things that the iPhone/iPad can fit onto....... and hoverboats (that can probably be controlled with an iPhone/iPad).

Yahoo is really nothing more than a pointless leftover from the dot com boom that failed to keep up with the times. Microsoft pitching Kinect control tech to telly makers

CmdrX3
FAIL

errm because it would be extremely useful.

I actually said in a comment months ago they should be doing this as well as pushing it to monitor makers to integrate. The fact that it was one of the biggest selling gadgets of all time and took the T3 Gadget of the Year pretty much puts paid to your statement about it not being wanted.

Fortunately there are quite a few people in the world with considerably more vision than yourself that have seen the possibilities that what was a simple gaming gadget would bring. Even Microsoft have caught on to the fact that it has much much more potential than just gaming and is taking the opportunity that it sees.

Maybe it's time to get the chip off your shoulder about Microsoft and move on with your life.

Microsoft to offer dual upgrade path for Windows 8

CmdrX3

To be honest the upgrade procedure has never bothered me in the slightest what has always bothered me is the fucking hours of installing updates, patches, service packs and seemingly endless net framework updates we usually end up having to sit through. On this one I've got to give it to Apple (much as it pains me). One large combo update every so often with a few updates in between. Even on a reinstall of OSX it's basically install OS, install update combo and possibly a few program updates and it's job done. It's a shame it's such a dull OS.

I have a better idea, how about people just pay off their debts. The number of people who probably say they can't afford to pay off the 50" LCD they "bought" but can still manage to buy a packet of cigarettes everyday would probably scare us. There are genuine reasons for getting into debt, but very few genuine reasons for at least attempting to get out of it. The number of people that can't afford at least a £1 a week is not high.
