How Microsoft will cram Windows 10 even harder down your PC's throat early next year

Re: Evil

How can you call it "just" an upgrade? And you consider their changes to be "tweaked a few bits under the hood"? Microsoft must LOVE people like you...

What gets me the most about that 'upgrade' comment is (and no-one else seems to have mentioned it yet) is the look and feel of the new OS!

I have no desire to use an Operating System that looks like this - starting with Windows 8 M$ have tried to ease us into the 'this could be your phone you are using now' mentality and I am curious why? No, I'm not actually - I can work out the advantages of mobile technology for myself and don't need others to tell me I need it.

And the new Windows 10 flat-UI look - what happens if I literally just don't like it, can I make it look like XP anymore? Even Windows 7 with Aero was survivable but this...

Perhaps I am just too old-fashioned but having a GUI that looks like a GUI is important to me - if I wanted a flat look I should be able to apply it, not have it shoved in my face and down my throat.

</rant> Phew! I've been waiting to say that for a long time...

Max Payne 3

Was looking forward to it but the hype has put me off...

I really enjoyed both Max Payne 1 & 2 but ever since Rockstar have have the code ready to run we've been bombarded by how good 3 is going to be, what it looks like and what the new story is about... And why Max is now bald!

Perhaps they never saw the mistake Warner Brothers made with Matrix Reloaded - I'd seen most of the film already from all the trailers and clips they kept putting on the website, when I watched the actual film all I thought was "Is that it?"

What puts me off most though (and this review commented on it as well) is why is there so much focus on the gore in these games now? Syndicate was bad enough (hey I can get the enemy to blow his own head off) but now you can watch the final bad-guy die in slo-mo! Even slow it down more, Wow!! I remember the slo-mo in the first game and I always felt it was about celebrating managing to survive the firefight rather than seeing how much blood you can get out of the enemy.

And who else feels inadequate after watching the trailers where whoever is playing is easily getting EVERY single enemy with a headshot? That's gonna make me feel a whole lot better towards the game when the 'new and improved' AI keeps killing me because I don't nail them perfectly first shot...

Smut oglers told to opt in to keep web filth flowing

Black Helicopters

Or to put it another way

Excuse the expression but you people really don't get it, do you? You've been able to get your pet peeve off your chest whether it's: useless parents, the ISP's bowing down, BT/Phorm, overzealous parenting groups, whatever.

Yes, all good points covered, but the one that no-one seemed to mention is:

The government doesn't actually like the World Wide Web or the underlying Internet! Why, because it can't control it! The only reason it's still there is because they've been able to monetise it...

I'm only speaking of my understanding of here in the UK where since I've been old enough to get online (and I leave it up to you to when that might have been) government have been requesting some sort of control on the flow of information in and out of the country. As we've gone along the reasons have included piracy (music then movies), terrorism, child porn, extreme porn, hentai and now general adult material.

It's not the reason, it's the opportunity for them to see if an effective form of control has been developed and can be applied to the whole network infrastructure ensuring no-one can sneak through.

They love it when some 'concerned' group makes a noise and demands changes that they feel will make an improvement to the lives of all. All it does is give the government another legitimate reason to apply pressure to the ISP's.`

I really needed to get that rant off my chest - it's been bugging me for AGES!

Firefox 4 beta gets Sync and Tab Candy Tab Panorama

What's left?

So... If I'm not fussed about syncing my bookmarks across multiple devices and am quite capable of organising my tabs how I like - what does Firefox 4 actually give me over 3?

Linux game-time refined with latest Wine

Thumb Down

Regarding the OpenOffice comment...

If they add the so-called 'feature' of Ribbon-style toolbars to OOo then I, for one, shall be looking for another package to use!! It's the Worst thing M$ did to Office!

Just had to get that off my chest, phew.
