The UK is running on empty when it comes to electric vehicle charging points

BogBeast

its not just the public charging

After two years of Tesla ownership, it is evident that non-supercharger public charging is a joke. Even the Tesla network will be borderline useful as the number of Teslas increases (and the network opens to 3rd parties). Anyone who thought that an electric bus was a good idea to send to Cornwall as some sort of demonstration is an evil genius or thoroughly incompetent and should be sacked.

Ninety percent of my charging is done at home. Whilst public charging needs to be fixed, building and planning regs need to be updated urgently to support the charging of multiple electric cars at home. New houses need adequate drives and/or garages, together which large electricity incomers to support the number of cars needing to be charged in the house (bear in mind that households are increasingly multi-generational with parents and kids potentially having cars). Why solar panels are not mandated as part of the new builds is lost on me..

BogBeast

Not quite....

"Before Mist, Juniper didn't offer its own wireless access points, relying instead on partners like Samsung, Ruckus, Aerohive and Aruba."

Oh yes they did. They have chewed up at least 2 other Wifi companies (Trapeze and another I cant recall). Decent enough products IIRC, until Juniper got to them...

Wi-Fi was MEANT to be this way: Antennas and standards, 802.11 style

BogBeast

To be fair there are vendors out there that are trying to mitigate the effect of poorly connected (or old standard) clients 'hogging' airtime. Mostly referred to as 'Air Time' fairness, in my experience it can work quite well (depending on vendor...)

It used to be the preserve of enterprise grade managed wifi (where I spend most of my working life) I now notice from Youtube that both Draytek and Netgear are offering the function.

Re: Ha ha ha

Well, at least we have plenty of other phone vendors to give our money to. Those holding iphones, not so much..

Samsung may come to regret the decision, depends how much negative PR this generates around becoming restrictive (as Apple...) .

I would hazard a guess that 80% of handsets that Samsung sells NEVER leave the country they are bought in, those that do, vast majority will do so on a roaming agreement, leaving a very small number of people (by %) that might have be disadvantaged by this.

Samsung see commercial benefit in making the change and made a judgement on how that will effects their bottom line. Lets see how it pans out....

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 hands-on review

BogBeast
Thumb Up

After previously being vaguely anti large phones I have been slightly fascinated by the Note, so I recently one on eBay just to try it out, after all I could always toss it back if I didn't get on with it.

I am a convert now, so much so that I have found myself using my Nexus 7 less for web and email and my Nexus S not at all for calling.

Thought it might be just too large, but most of the time I don't notice it, except maybe not being too comfortable driving with it in my jeans front pockets. I happily trade that off for the massively more useful amount of screen space.

If all did was phone, then I wouldn't bother with it. Making calls is less than 10% of what I do with it and as such I find it a real boon

I will be spending my upgrade on the Note 2 and probably get most of what I paid back on eBay for the Note 1.

As for caring what I look like when I occasionally use it as a phone. Really… you care what people think?

Proxy Support...

Whilst Chrome and the base OS just about support HTTP proxy, market (play) still doesn't and infact Gmail seems to have gone backwards from ICS (I am sure that it worked via proxy).

Thumb Up

This thing has changed my (working) life...

I would mark this closer to 95%.

There are few things that have made my professional life much easier in one swoop. There's this and Dropbox.

For years I have trundled around with huge wads of cd/dvd's, swearing each time somebody released a new revision of some software that requires a new DVD/CD to be burnt.

With a 300 gig drive this has made all of that go away. I now can carry everything I need in the space of a 3.5" caddy.

I can't think of one device that hasn't booted from this or one ISO that hasn't booted.

Contrary to the review, mine seems to remember the choice of ISO over a power down or reboot.

Also you can mount the HD and virtual DVD simultaneously making data migrations and rebuilds so easy.

Downsides?

• Wish it was USB3 – although I suspect that’s coming.

• Wish they had included a USB Y cable as sometimes the device struggles for power (50p off of eBay)

• The jog dial is a tad fragile – I wonder if it’s going to put up with the massive amount of use its getting.

Mind you for £30, I would happily buy a spare.

If you do IT for a living – buy one.

London rioters should 'loose all benefits'

BogBeast
Thumb Up

Wow, common sense..

"Their merits? Their merits seem to be to loot and destroy whenever the opportunity arises, this is clearly proven. It has fuck all to do with the amount of cash in their pockets. I'm sure every single one of the looters has a roof over their head, clothes on their back, and food in their belly. Yet they still went out and caused terror and destruction because they could.

Remove your cranium from your posterior and come down from the ivory tower - the looters of the last few days are scum pure and simple. The reasons for them being scum can be debated at length, and will be, but as of now they are scum.

Those who believe benefits should remain or there will be more crime are making the same mistakes the Romans did, and which led to the fall of their empire: Throwing money at the barbarians to make them go away, only to have them come back for more because it obviously works for them - until the coffers were empty and they decided to stay. We are at the coffers empty stage now.

The answer is exceptionally low benefits (a soup kitchen to eat, a tiny flat to live, clothes from Oxfam), combined with effective, zero-tolerance policing. Leaving only one route open for people to improve their lot: Getting a job and contributing to society.

An emphasis on personal effort as the way to achieve this is crucial, and an end to the bollocks excuses that bleeding-heart wankers give people at the bottom to blame for their lack of success. It's not the bankers, the politicians, the rich or anyone else keeping them down - it's themselves.

Now I've set the world to rights I'm off for a wank!"

Wow, common sense..

I could not agree more (apart from the wank bit…)

Hmm.

Whilst android "still suffers a lack of real enterprise class policy enforcement ..." the biggest issue that I can see is androids inability to implement web proxy support on a wirelless connection.
