Received a renewal from LCN yesterday. Until I went to look at my list of domains I didn't realise I'd been scammed.

Funny how these "one year free registration" domains have never shown up in my domain list before that date.

They're refunding me, which is decent of them at least.

In the headline and the main body the word(s) "dies/has died" is used.

Backblaze big data restore. Get this: it involves disk drives

As a user of Backblaze (and no connection to them), for the price their service is unbelievable. They have saved me several times when I've deleted or overwritten a file, and the backup 'just works' - sits in the background and keeps things safe. They look after, urmm, a little over a 1TB of data for me. For <$5 month (I pay two-yearly). Show me -anywhere- else that even comes close.

Sure the encryption requires an amount of trust in them, but I use a local passphrase to provide an additional level, and really I don't store anything particularly sensitive (no IP, no work) on their service.

As far as I'm concerned, if they want to look after my collection of photos and videos of my kids growing up in a way that I can get them back if my house explodes, I'm happy. As is my wife, which is almost more important.

Seafile is another alternative - I preferred it to OwnCloud when I tested them both.

Seafile is essentially Dropbox but you can use your own server. Useful on an Intranet.

You don't /need/ a bridge - you need /something/ wired. A speaker, or a bridge.

I don't have my bridge plugged in, yet my 5.1 works perfectly.

Phone charging log helps to convict murderer

My iPhone tells me how long it's been in-use since its last full charge.

I imagine recording when it was charged is part of that.

Androids give you a battery graph which shows charge/discharge in some detail. Again, recording when (and by how much) the battery was charged is all part of that data collection.

... stretched out to such extremes. It repeats itself about three times over.

I wonder if they have checked every SIM from the passengers phones - including tablets, Kindles, etc.

I'd be absolutely amazed if everyone in the flight turned their phones and other devices off. If it flew off randomly for hours (or indeed was hijacked and landed), surely one of these devices tried to register with a network somewhere ...

As an owner of some Apple kit (and and iPad 1 and iPad 2), as well as some Android kit (Nexus 4 phone) I sort of want a reason to upgrade .. but can't find one.

I'm sat staring at my iPad 2 and never really worry it's not fast enough for what I want. Yes, the retina display is lovely when I look at my wife's iPad 3, but can I still read the screen? Yes.

It's 33% lighter than then iPad 4, but remember the iPad 4 is heavier than the iPad 2 because of all the Retina stuff. Therefore the iPad Air is smaller than my 2, but not massively lighter.

Grr.

Pirate Bay moves to the cloud to confound copyright cops

I've never quite understood what's so hard about tracking them down. My computer knows "where" their server is as it quite easily gets data from their website. So why can't you just 'follow the packets' and end up at the server?

I assume they are located somewhere not-so-easy to walk in and bust, or they are located in so many places that it's impractical.

On the management side several people must be looking after the site, "unpaid", full time. What's in it for them .. except great risk?

You can't help but admire their tenacity. I don't think they'll ever be 'busted' out of existence, but I can see them claiming their mission is complete at some point and just gracefully turning everything off.

p.s. TPB, please can I have some of your servers you no longer need? :)

Needs a purpose

Like many comments before me, I don't see this replacing the systems already in schools as it doesn't offer anything that they don't already, at least not when your view is tilted towards programming.

I've received my invite from RS to purchase one; I really WANT to need this, but I'm struggling to find an excuse. Anything I may want to do on it (program, view videos, whatever) is already well served by my existing PC, my existing media players, etc.

Got two cardboard boxes in the post today to return my 2G and 4G nano devices. Don't use them, but don't want them going up in smoke, either.

I suspect they will refurbish the ones they get back and send them back out again, hence the six weeks.
