So long, Hotmail: Remaining users migrated to Outlook.com

Trib

Re: Hotmail - for El reg ID's

You can turn off ads with the paid Outlook option.

Logout is in the same place that GMail has it, in a drop down by clicking on your account name. Not sure where the old Hotmail interface had it, I haven't seen the old Hotmail interface in a while.

Must be something with your system on the speed, because Outlook.com opens faster than my Gmail account (love how GMail always starts with 'loading'). Not sure how fast compared to old Hotmail.

Nokia deflates Google's video codec thought bubble

Nokia isn't saying they wouldn't license the patents, just that aren't going to give them away or license them under FRAND.

"not commit either to donating the patents to the IETF standard, nor does it offer FRAND access to the technologies."

So if Google wants to use these patents, they just need to come to license terms that Nokia would agree to.

Salesforce CEO Benioff: Win 8 is 'the end of Windows'

Trib

"he said, customers are increasingly using smartphones and tablets as their primary computing devices"

Well, since Windows 8 is designed to run on tablets and mobile devices, I think Windows 8 isn't dead. I do think the world will become more heterogeneous with devices people will use (Windows, iOS, Android, Windows Phone). But Windows is far from dead.

New Apple keyboard patent may spell trouble for Android

Trib

Windows has had an on screen keyboard for a while now. It has button that when you click on them change the layout of the keyboard. For example, when I press the 'shift' key, all of my letters turn upper case. Isn’t a parent supposed to be something that 'someone skilled in the art' wouldn’t think of easily? I don’t make smartphones or computer operating systems, but I could have come up with this idea.

iPad SURVIVES FALL FROM SPACE

Trib

I noticed that the camera on the bar also surrived the fall (from all of the video they showed from it) and it didn't appear to have a G-Form case on it, so the real question is would the iPad surived like the camera did without the case.

Also putting the GPS tracker on the back side of the case so you know it will fall on it back probably help a lot as well, so you now the the iPad isn't landing on its edge.

Carriers are the people that put this software there

This software in those OS by default, the carriers put it there and they new it. Perhaps they didn't know how 'deep' the CIQ software goes, but the are the people reponsiblity for that software being on your phone.

HTC Radar WinPho 7.5 smartphone

Trib
WTF?

Have you used the phone?

USB wtihout Zune. I'm assuming you mean having access directly to the device without using Zune? Personally, I never had a need to connect my WP to my computer, and when I plug it into power it just syncs automatically all of my music, phones and video. I've never had a need to directly access the filesystem of the phone on my computer (which you can do with a hack). Only time I've needed to directly connect to to perform software updates.

Tethering is supported by Mango, but your phone and device firmware have to support it. Most older devices do not at this point. So I have to agree if you don't have it, then it isn't there.

UI in portrait and some in landscape in the default OS. I would like direct eveidence of this on the phone. While some of the UI doesn't work in landscape, I don't know of single instance where you are forced to use landscape if you didn't want to.

Bizarre ringtone/vibrate optioin? I don't know that this means. Mine has vibrate only and ringtone/vibrate. I can turn virbrate off in the settings if I want ringtone only. What are you looking for? Different levels of vibrate? Otherwise, what makes these bizarre, the fact that it has them?

What is useless about the browser? Does it not display webpages? Mine does, if your can't perhaps your phone is broken.

If you can't drag the screen up about 1 inch to press the answer button, that perhaps a smart phone isn't for you. You have to be kidding me!

For the virbrate only, do you know that if you turn the volume down it goes to virbrate automtacally. Am I not understanding? I've never had a problem with this.

Personally, either this phone is just too complex, you have an axe to grind, or don't even have one. I tried to find the 117 issues on your blog, but Bing and Google can't find it. Would be nice you say that you have a listing of these you include the link to people can look.

Not saying the phone is perfect. But lets get real here thing like "you can't get the screen to unlock fast enought to answer a call" are total BS.

I use my Samsung Windows Phone for business day to day and it has worked great. Again, not saying there aren't an issue here to there, but nothing that you have listed (expect perhaps the internet sharing).

iCloud.com goes live

Trib

I've had this for 8 months now....

You only have to pay for the extra storage right?

With Windows Phone 7, you get 25GB of Skydrive for free, with calendar, mail, contacts and Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote) and the phone location/lock/wipe tools all for free. You don't even need a Windows Phone to use any of those services, just sign up, (even on a Mac).

Plus auto uploading of your pictures, and they won't delete them after 30 days. Any they have shown that with the Windows Phone Mango update you will be able to stream music from Skydrive.

Sounds like I've had iCloud for the past 8 months. Yes, I know there is more to it with APIs, but for what is offered in the base package, this solution already exists, just not on iPhone (yet).

Go ahead and spy on customers, says judge

Trib
WTF?

This judge must be an idiot

"Since the laptop is no longer in their possession, but that of the police, the Byrds can’t be at risk of harm; ergo, no injunction."

Except that the laptop would contain information that COULD be harmful if this information was used. What if there are account numbers and passwords that go in the wrong hands because this software was insecure or was use for reasons that it shouldn't be used for. If there is one thing that we know, human nature will make us curious, and people that have access to use this software will 'peek; from time to time.

"...former employee of the Aaron’s franchise testified that the software routinely had, in the past, captured highly sensitive information such as bank account details (since it can be configured to capture keystrokes as well as webcam pictures), the judge decided that since the evidence was given by someone no longer in Aaron’s employ, what had happened in the past didn’t count as evidence of likely future harm."

And there is it , right there. A former employee had the ability to get bank account details. How can this no be likely future harm!

Perhaps if the rental contract made it clear that this software was on your system and what it could do, and you signed it saying you agree. Otherwise, I cannot see any reason this would be okay.

Its more that....

While I'm sure you would be happy to get a new version of SolidWorks that wouldn't open your previous Solidworks projects, there is more than that as to why people are complaining.

'Pro' video editing applications support features like video output to a video monitor (because compuer monitors aren't an accurate display of video content) and also support EDL (basic timecode edit lists) and most 'pro' application support Multicam editing. All of these features are missing in the new FCP-X, but are in FCP7.

Can't wait

It all looks good to me. iPhone and Android users want to poo-poo WP7 just because it is a Microsoft product, but I think they are comming on strong with this release. Yes, WP7 is comming from behind, I don't think this is a surpise to anyone, but I think the worry is that it will catch up.

And of course, we know that the Apple and Google fanbois can stand the thought that Microsoft could actually make a good product.

Is Skype Microsoft's PowerPoint part deux?

Trib

Verb or noun, does it matter?

Maybe PowerPoint isn't a verb, I would say it more a noun. "I'm going to show you some PowerPoint". Just doesn't really matter if it is Keynote or Impress. For better or worse, poeple know that a slide presentation is 'PowerPoint'.

Now Skype can be a verb. I've heard many poeple say 'Skype me' or 'I'll Skype you'. I think the Skype very much is the term for talking with video/audio over the Internet, wheather you are using Skype or FaceTime or something else.

Is it worth 8 billion? I don't konw, but I do think that it is worth a lot, and I think it will be good for Microsoft.

Google teaches Microsoft's IE9 to love open video codec

Trib

More standards.....

The major issue is that VP8 isn't support is most hardware yet, where as H.264 is. While not a major issue on desktop system, for mobile this is a huge issue as H.264 in hardware offers better performance and battery life. While I commend Google for making VP8 open and free. I think they in the long run have make the issue more complex instead of less.

HTML5 kicked into 2014

Trib

Three more years....

"considering IE9 is coming this year, it's likely to be 2015 before Microsoft can genuinely claim an HTML5-compliant browser for the PC. Before that, we should expect another noncompliant browser in 2013."

Well if the spec isn't finished until 2014, then all browsers will be noncompliant until that time, not just IE.

Didn't IE9 top the current HTML 5 compatibility tests from W3C?

While I'm not saying that IE is perfect, here we are with a spec that won't be finalized for three more years, and the complaining is already starting with IE.

Windows 7 Phone glitch spews phantom data

Not everyone has seen this issue (if it is there)

I've not seen this problem with my Samsung Focus WP7. I'll admint that doesn't mean it isn't there, but I've had my WP7 for a month an a half now with a 200mb plan. For the last month I've left 3G on all the time, and I've not had any 3G data use that I've not expected.

How long is this test over?

I important piece of information that I don't see here is how long this test if over? 1 year? 6 months? Out of the box? Kind of important to know, and have this data updated over time to see if the failure changes with age. Because, without a timeframe, one could make the clam that 100% of SSDs AND hard drives drives fail.... Given enough time.

Answer

All this gigabytes talk about browser size got me worried so I took a look.

My IE9 folder just under .013 gigabytes (for both x86 and x64 versions) and my FireFox 4 (x86) folder is just under .027 gigabytes and my Google Chrome (x86) folder is .354 gigabytes! At this rate better get a larger hard drive!

Yes, I know that IE is larger than that because there a components in the Window folder as well...

As for hardware requirements, I have to agree, how dare these browser makers use my graphics card advanced features. The only apps that should use the abilities of my graphics cards are games, any apps that isn't a game is using resources that I just can't spare!

17 Years might be the Window NT DOSBox bug, but it wasn't know about for 16.9 of those years. It would guess that the .LNK bug is also about 17 years old and fixed within a few weeks.

It sounds like this Linux bug was found 5 years ago and known about for 5 years as well.
