Re: the java angle....
Yes you are correct. The post should say "The Javascript angle"
I should know better.
The point is that a compromised account could be used to trick other users into executing malicious code. Particularly non technical users.

The java vulnerability is key here.
It works by running a malitious script when a link is pressed in a compromised site.
Here's how it could work:
you see a tweet from somone you follow and trust "hey look at this"
you click on the link, go to the compromised site "press to enter site dialog box" which you click on.
the javascript runs in the background and your system is compromised.
A great way to build a botnet...
"Windows RT, the ARM version, goes a step further by prohibiting desktop software installation completely."
So on the ARM platform you cannot install Linux because of "Secure Boot" lockdown and you cannot install software unless it is bought from the Microsft App Store.
Bit restrictive.
Said this before but this is what happens when one company has a monopoly.
I'm not sayning that mad decisions are not made in the FOSS world (eg Gnome 3) but at least people have the opertunity to code round things they don't like.
With MS market share under pressure (from Apple) you are going to see more of these tactics to lock users in.
If you don't like it you can either boot Linux (before MS lock down the hardware and stops you) or keep paying your tax to MS and spend your time moaning on the Reg.
Its time to choose.
..but in the late 1970's this was predicted in a report presented to the government of the day that London would run out of water by 2010.
The solution was to build a national grid of water pipes connecting up the then regional water boards.
Water could then be moved around the country easily from the wet northern areas to the dry south.
The idea was scrapped by Thatcher as too expensive.
This was just a publicity stunt organised by Microsoft to try and associated Linux with "hackers" and the "bad people" in the general publics mind.
Dont belive me?
Just look at the coverage the Microsoft friendly BBC Technology page gave this none story.
(the BBC's head of technology is ex MS)
Yawn
1. Impose a tax on people who only have Iplayer.
2. Claim there is not enough resource to police the tax.
3. Put up the BBC Licence fee to cover the "shortfall"
Or to put it another way: more stealth tax from the criminals in the big yellow building with a giant clock tower on the front.
Microsoft's core mission is to KILL Free Software.
Always was and always will be.
They are the enamy of computer users, free software and a free society.
They can NEVER be trusted. This is a wake up call to cumputer users everyware.
Don't sleep walk into slavery. Don't use Micosoft.
Oh and please continue using the MS FUD term Freetard. I would rather be a Freetard than a slave.
MS are forcing hardware makers to use a new BIOS called UEFI which has signed keys, thus only allowing Windows to boot on the next generation of PC.
So it dosen't matter what anyone on this forum thinks about Win8. In the future there will be only Windows.
Booting Linux will be 'insecure' and the hardware will not ALLOW it.
Thus creating a total Microsoft monopoly on the PC.
So moan all you want about Win 8, MS dosen't care, soon you will have no other option.
I know its been said before but after the disater that was KDE 4 would it not have been easier to miss a release and finish off Unity.
When will developers realise that the one thing users hate more than anything is being used as a proving ground for incomplete or bug ridden software.
By releasing software that is unfinished you damage the reputation of Ubuntu and of Linux in general. If its a development release PUT A LABEL ON IT don't try and pass it off as a finished product.
Not only that Unity and Gnome 3 have both broken Compiz one of the best pieces of eye cnady on any computer and the one thing that makes new users go wow even if it is not that useful.
Total Fail.
Oracle waged war on the FOSS community and lost.
Most Linux distro's have already moved to Libre Office and will stay as that is where the active development is happening.
Oracle are just trying to save face after their appalling behaviour towards the community .
Try saying sorry Larry.
Just to clarify a few points from the replies.
I am not anti Microsoft. I am pro choice.
Why would PC's "sit on shelves"? I am NOT advocating PCW should sell computers with Linux pre installed. I am advocating that for a number of consumers with the correct tec skills (like REG readers) you should be able to buy a computer blank and then install the OS of your choice.
If a PC comes from the factory with Windows pre installed (and all the junk that comes with it)there should be an option for the shop to format the drive and knock the price of Windows off the computer. Would take about 5 minutes.
Not saying this is for eveyone just it would be a nice option for those with the skills to do it.
Would you like to install Windows yourself without all that trial rubbish which comes from a pre built PC?
If you had a 14 year old car and the manufacturer stopped making parts for it, banned anyone else from making parts for it and kept certain information private so you could not repair it yourself you would be up in arms.
However we seem to tolerate this behaviour “because its software"
If Microsoft is refusing to support a "legacy product" they should either licence the software to third party developers to support it or open source the code.
Why should they do this? Well quite simply because they have a virtual monopoly and they are abusing their dominant position in the market by forcing people to upgrade by not fixing their broken product.
Sadly what Nokia failed to appreciate is that since the iPhone came to market, Smart phones are fashion items and brand is as important as functionality for many buyers. (sad but true).
MS is not a fashionable brand.
In fact with this tie up Nokia has re-branded itself as the fashion equivalent of a tweed jacket with leather patches on the elbows.
oh dear...
Why dont the Police try solving some real crime for a change.
Have you ever been visited by the boys in blue if you are unlucy enough to have your house burgled. They could not give a stuff.
Had your credit card stolen. Not interested.
But two consentining people having sex, my god call the riot squad.
I think as usual this is an ambitious copper trying to get some publicity in order to get promoted.
The real criminals are all in a big sandy coloured builing on the Thames next to a giant clock tower, go check that out.
A jogger used to run naked past my Gran's house at 3am every night.
One day she told a passing Police Officer who said he could not do anything about it until he received a complaint.
My Gran replied " I am making a compliant, can't he jog any earlier I haven't been to sleep in weeks!"
( The old ones are the best)
5 and a half years for stealing cable TV!!!
Should have tried mugging old ladies with violence. He would have only got 20 hours community service from our "World Class" justice system.
You can see where the priorities of the British Legal System lie with this case.
If you rob peoples home , assault innocent people or make peoples lives a misery you get a slap on the wrist.
BUT...
If you dare to steal from a big corporation like Virgin Media the whole weight of the law is brought to bare.
Why is it impossible to buy a bare metal PC in any shop or online?
I would love to go out and buy a computer clean and install the OS of my choice instead of having Windows "preinstalled" for my "convenience"
I know this is not the option for everyone, however it would be nice to have a choice not to have to pay the MS tax on new hardware. After all I thought we lived in a free society.
This is the real problem for Linux. When new users buy hardware they are unaware they have an OS choice and are faced with biased, corrupt sales people to lazy to support anything else but MS products.
Not being funny but part of being a parent is to protect your kids from harm.
If you cant be bothered to learn about internet security and your kids see naughty pictures then thats YOUR FAULT.
Its time parents took responsability for their kids.
If you cant police your own computer in your own home then turn it off but don't expect the government to do your job for you.
Make no mistake this dispute is NOT about the money. BT have chosen this issue to provoke a dispute in order to break the CWU. BT could easily afford the £65 million a 5% rise would cost. They want to provoke a dispute so they can portray the CWU as greedy and irresponsible. However what BT are not saying is that last year the employees did not receive a pay rise and did not go on strike over this issue because they wanted to help the company through a difficult period. This was done on the understanding when things improved employees would be compensated fairly. The company has reneged on this gentleman's agreement and this has provoked the current situation. In addition Chairman Mike Rake wanted all employees (except the board) to take a 10% PAY CUT last year and it was only successful negotiation by Andy Kerr which prevented this.
