The point is that a compromised account could be used to trick other users into executing malicious code. Particularly non technical users.

The java vulnerability is key here.

It works by running a malitious script when a link is pressed in a compromised site.

Here's how it could work:

you see a tweet from somone you follow and trust "hey look at this"

you click on the link, go to the compromised site "press to enter site dialog box" which you click on.

the javascript runs in the background and your system is compromised.

A great way to build a botnet...

I've read that the ARM version of Win 8 will lock the BIOS so Linux users will no longer be able to dual boot.

This will be one of the differences between the Intel and ARM versions (Intel will still dual boot).

MS are forcing hardware makers to use a new BIOS called UEFI which has signed keys, thus only allowing Windows to boot on the next generation of PC.

I know its been said before but after the disater that was KDE 4 would it not have been easier to miss a release and finish off Unity.

When will developers realise that the one thing users hate more than anything is being used as a proving ground for incomplete or bug ridden software.

By releasing software that is unfinished you damage the reputation of Ubuntu and of Linux in general. If its a development release PUT A LABEL ON IT don't try and pass it off as a finished product.

Not only that Unity and Gnome 3 have both broken Compiz one of the best pieces of eye cnady on any computer and the one thing that makes new users go wow even if it is not that useful.

Just to clarify a few points from the replies.

I am not anti Microsoft. I am pro choice.

Why would PC's "sit on shelves"? I am NOT advocating PCW should sell computers with Linux pre installed. I am advocating that for a number of consumers with the correct tec skills (like REG readers) you should be able to buy a computer blank and then install the OS of your choice.

If a PC comes from the factory with Windows pre installed (and all the junk that comes with it)there should be an option for the shop to format the drive and knock the price of Windows off the computer. Would take about 5 minutes.

Not saying this is for eveyone just it would be a nice option for those with the skills to do it.

Would you like to install Windows yourself without all that trial rubbish which comes from a pre built PC?

If Microsoft is refusing to support a "legacy product" they should either licence the software to third party developers to support it or open source the code.

I would love to go out and buy a computer clean and install the OS of my choice instead of having Windows "preinstalled" for my "convenience"

I know this is not the option for everyone, however it would be nice to have a choice not to have to pay the MS tax on new hardware. After all I thought we lived in a free society.

Make no mistake this dispute is NOT about the money. BT have chosen this issue to provoke a dispute in order to break the CWU. BT could easily afford the £65 million a 5% rise would cost. They want to provoke a dispute so they can portray the CWU as greedy and irresponsible. However what BT are not saying is that last year the employees did not receive a pay rise and did not go on strike over this issue because they wanted to help the company through a difficult period. This was done on the understanding when things improved employees would be compensated fairly. The company has reneged on this gentleman's agreement and this has provoked the current situation. In addition Chairman Mike Rake wanted all employees (except the board) to take a 10% PAY CUT last year and it was only successful negotiation by Andy Kerr which prevented this.
