You know how that data breach happened? Three words: eBay, hard drives

confused one

kill it with fire

I always remove the PCBA, crush that with a dead-blow hammer or drop it into a shredder to destroy all the embedded flash. For magnetic media, I take a screw gun to the drive and remove the platters, which then spend quality time under a propane torch or in a brazing furnace. Usually long enough that the plating blisters off and the aluminum platters melt. If I cannot access a torch, I'll grind the platters down in the machine shop, destroying the plating. After it cools, all the little bits and pieces can then go in the garbage / recycle bin.

A previous employer of mine had a history of buying used machines by the pallet load from a refurbisher; and, after a little forensics I found corporate data belonging to the prior owner(s). After that experience, I'll never let a drive out of my hands without doing the above.

Why SpaceX will sort out Sunday's snafu faster than NASA ever could

32 days, not 32 weeks

They'll handle this a lot faster than 32 weeks. More like 32 days (ok, that's too fast, call it twice that at 2 months) It's a relatively small private company with a big backlog, they can't afford to take half a year to find the problem. They will find the root cause, verify it to everyone's satisfaction, institute changes, retrofit everything in production, retest everything in the queue and be back on the launch pad by end of August.

"the serious drinking kicks off with the arrival of the P.A.s and the compulsory Golden Slammers"

So, the executive P.A.'s have a drinking problem... The PFY has a habit of feeding that problem... Are one or more of the P.A.'s hot? Is there one that the PFY is, perhaps, planning to take advantage of?

Win8 install in VM

I downloaded the Developer Preview x64 version.

It will not install in VMWare Workstation -- from what I could see it appears to try to use an instruction that either is not implemented or is not properly implemented in the virtual cpu. I admit I may be way off base... VMWare is working on an update.

However, it loads and runs fine in Oracle VirtualBox. It's a bit glitchy, the UI hangs for a few seconds occasionally. I haven't yet determined if this is the fault of VirtualBox or the fact this is a pre-beta version of Windows 8 intended for developers.
