BridgeSTOR in rash NAS cash splash

rfarkaly

To Chris Schmid: Well, not exactly. The BridgeSTOR solution operates at the NTFS cluster level, below the file system and above the block storage device, so it is indifferent to the composition of the data it processes. Let's take your comment about the attachments being compressed and stored in that format. The underlying blocks stored in recipient #1's home directory (compressed in your scenario) would still be deduplicated against the same blocks stored in recipient #2's home directory. Deduplication at this level is powerful, unobtrusive and highly effective. You should check out BridgeSTOR's web site and take advantage of their money-back offer.

Check out the Dedupe Cards

In-line dedupe and compress (and turn on encryption as well) for Windows servers is available at a bargain-basement price from BridgeSTOR. The heavy computational lifting is handled by a processor on a PCIe card.

Here is what The Register had to say about it:

Sr Director Storage Product Marketing

Chris,

I can't really go along with your statement that: "With Ocarina having just been bought by Dell it's likely that Permabit now has the OEM supply field for deduplication software to itself." Our Exar BitWackr is primarily software assisted by a specialized ASIC that virtually eliminates latency in deduplication. Latency is the enemy of deduplication performance and is what keeps the technology out of the primary data path - with BitWackr as the sole exception. Exar is, indeed, an OEM supplier and we have a number of evaluations currently underway. So to rephrase your comment: "With Ocarina having just been bought by Dell it's likely that Permabit and Exar that now have the OEM supply field for deduplication software to themselves"

Cheers,

Bob.

You Missed Exar

Hi Chris. You missed Exar and BitWackr primary storage deduplication technology in you latest. (www.bitwackr.com) Our product is included in the VDI SSD storage appliances sold by Whiptail as the "Racerunner". As can be seen, we have done a pretty fair job of overcoming the "insertion loss" and latency issues that many are concerned about in primary storage deduplication. Our technology is also sold to OEMs and we have a long list of companies currently evaluating our technology. Our products are in both the Linux and Windows spaces. I believe we are the only primary storage deduplication product available for Windows Servers in addition to our Linux technology. Thanks for letting me set the record straight.
