Re: Coincidence or by Design?
Eschewing - a lovely word which I shall try to incorporate into at least one conversation today.

Over a year ago I noticed that the Apple maps of my home area had several discrepancies, businesses ceased trading / in wrong location etc. I used the "report this" button to advise them but nothing ever got done.
Had another go a couple of months ago and am now getting "Problem Fixed" emails.
So it seems that Apple have now allocated more resources to fixing the errors. I know they got a justified slating over the maps issue but I am finding the maps app very good in my home location.
Mr Wibbles comment has got me thinking. I purchased a Garmin Edge Touring Cycle GPS as a birthday present for my wife but it is a bit of a nightmare trying to load Open Cycle Map or similar onto it, she finds it very unintuitive, doesn't like the screen and has basically given up and stuck it in a drawer.
Any Reg cyclists found a suitable phone?
Bill Krause of 3COM:
"We had put Ethernet on a card, and instead of having to screw a tap we had a connector that looked a lot like the one you screw into your cable box and TV. And were all excited about it. We set up four PCs, and we called Steve Jobs who was a good friend and told him, “You have to come over and see this demo.” Steve comes over and we hook it up and show it to him.
It was a classic Steve response: “Who’s the brain-dead asshole that came up with this shit? This is dreck, this is crap. You want to make it easy to install, just plug it into the telephone jack for cryin’ out loud.”
Why didn’t we think of that? No one knows to this day that Steve Jobs deserves the credit for creating Ethernet the way it is today, and it is a part of why it beat out other competing technologies. It was another one of his brilliant insights around user-interface.

Read an article by Bill Krause on a16z.com earlier today. Discussing the development of an Etherenet adaptor he said:

They should have bought him a pint - or several
So, It was you you bastard. I remember running marathons in the 80's and some plonkers insisted on having the pace set on his Casio so it BEEPED every stride.
In one race I was running in a group with a guy having his watch BEEPING every stride and one, at the time well known lady runner asking " are you going to switch that fucking thing off or do you expect us to listen to it all the way round"
I have a Garmin 610. Great GPS running tool and excellent as a day to day watch with a battery life of about a month.
I have to physically swipe the touch screen from right to left to initialise the GPS acquisition, then if I do not physically press the " Start Activity " button ( top right ) it times out and reverts to watch mode.
You either have a duff unit or need to RTFM.
Battery life in GPS mode is about 8 hours with 1 second sampling, so no good for Ultras ( 910XT) has 20-22 hours of active GPS
I use my local library, there is quite a choice of DVDs, Box sets and foreign language films. Weekly rental is £1.50 for a standard DVD, £2.50 for box sets or Blu Ray, if it is a premier, just released title then they charge £3.50 and 2 day rental. I can search online to see if a particular title is in stock at one of my local libraries.
Last week I read "Let the right one in" by John Linqvist, and watched both the Swedish and American DVDs based on the book.
Check it out, you might be surprised at what is available, and by using your local Library you may be helping to keep it open.
Mark,
I am confused as to the GPS being useless outside a wifi area. I thought that the Nexus had a GPS chip in it and word work anywhere ( like my Garmin running watch )
I just wish someone would marry a waterproof device similar to this, possibly with e ink for battery life and full OS ( or similar ) mapping.
I can read a map and navigate but could see a use for such a device.
I am in the business and have respect for Intel - they may be big, but you NEED to be big to bring innovations to fruition in the semiconductor industry - Intel are consistently ahead of all other rivals (including my employer).
I have no respect for the crAppl€ marketing company.
Well Paul, I do respect your opinion, and you may be " in the business " with an "Employer". However, looking at your post would I be correct in guessing that you are there on work experience ?
Wot he said -- I too have used both and prefer RunMeter. Went for a long run this morning Garmin Forerunner 310xt on wrist, iPhone with Runmeter in backpack. Finished my run checked distances on both devices, pressed "Done" on Runmeter and within a minute received an email with a comprehensive breakdown of my run including google maps data.
I paid £2.99 an absolute bloody bargain.
Agree somewhat, anyone " jogging" with earphones has missed the pleasure of self reflection But I digress, I have a Garmin Forerunner 310 which is the dogs danglers, I pitched it against Runmeter ( not runkeeper though that is probably as good ) Garmin went tits up after about 18 hours whereas the Iphone running runmeter logged the complete run and had a tad left in reserve.
So, My "Sodding Iphone" sits quietly in my backpack logging my run and emailing the distances / splits/ etc automagically to myself and/or anyone I choose without any intervention. Most of the "Apps " available also have the option to update to Facebook or Twitter etc should you so wish. ( I don't have either of those accounts our my children have)
So, cycle from Dorset to Scotland to visit our Daughter? automatic updates every hour / defined period / to a specified Facebook / Twitter /Email address. ? No problem.
Compete in 10K / Marathon / proper run ? no problem , Iphone is your friend
Speaking as a pedestrian I have observed "odd" behaviour on a regular training run, group of several runners hitting green pedestrian lights in sequence over a route with a couple of "complex" junctions involved, these junctions usually require a button press to activate the pedestrian sequence, so, either there is an IR detection system seeing a group of runners as a vehicle and switching the lights to pedestrian, or there is a " Deity of your Choice" who is busy training for next years London / Edinburgh / Cardiff Marathon and is switching the sequence to optimise the training regime.
I guess you were referring to the wankers who steer BMW vehicles?
Having a daughter who has worked in most motor vehicle franchises I am quite au fait with the demographic of various marques. What finally made her decide to go back into higher education was the invasion of her Audi "family ethos" by the BMW twats
Saw the front page photo in yesterdays Indie ( the 20p version ). One guy dressed in black kicking the widow of tory HQ, surrounded by an arc of photographers 3 deep, with a couple of uniformed police officers stood in the background, I thought it looked staged, then I spotted his nicely polished black boots ! cynical? me? nah
