Troll sues Apple for daring to plug headphones into iPhone

Re: " Apple will reap what they have sown."

It must so hurt people like you when Apple continue to pile in the billions for their well-reviewed 'mediocre products'.

Re: Did I Read That Article Right?

Why wouldn't you put Linux on a high-spec system?

JDX Gold badge

Re: 8GB RAM and 256GB memory

It's a fairly poor attempt at a joke when an SSD is memory. It's the word 'disk' which is out of place,

JDX Gold badge

I agree, re-installing Windows instead of that nasty Linux is exactly what I'd do!

JDX Gold badge

Re: Does not compute?

So you're not target market then are you. The fact THEY are just copying an image across is irrelevant, the typical buyer will spend how ever many hours it takes to download/install/configure Linux.

Of course if you want a specific setup it's not for you but if someone wants a Linux dev-box, $50 is a good deal especially if they are not an expert Linux-er...

And as for you charging $300/hr, yeah right.

Re: They are giving the middle finger to microsoft at last!

As mentioned, creating and testing the image will have taken a fixed amount of time. At least as much as Windows, and fact probably more, but split over far fewer units sold.

JDX Gold badge

Re: Does not compute?

It's a niche product they have to put more time into per unit (R&D overhead / number of units). They might also anticipate higher support costs.

You're paying someone $50 to set it up for you, how much do you value your time?

Re: Supposedly

No they don't. As Hawking says in ABHOT, you wouldn't even know you'd crossed the event horizon.

JDX Gold badge

Re: Supposedly

Someone remind me... once you're beyond the event horizon you can never get back but does that also mean you can't escape getting closer and closer, or could you enter into orbit of the singularity inside the EH?

America planned to NUKE THE MOON

JDX Gold badge

Re: I find it deeply disturbing

But if you're GOING to test the tech can't we agree the moon is a better target than part of our own planet?

JDX Gold badge

Re: mentality of our friends from across the pond.

Wow, so far 7 people think setting a nuke off on the moon is worse than doing it on Earth.

JDX Gold badge

Re: I find it deeply disturbing

But blowing up islands and deserts and populated Japanese cities is?

JDX Gold badge

What exactly is wrong with nuking the moon? It makes more sense than setting it off on Earth, which is what we actually did.

Although, would a nuke work as well with no atmosphere... you need matter to create a shock wave.

It is a good pairing for the word trough, MS cast aspersions over how good Google's results are, whereas Scroogle.com just stole them.

Badges for Commentards

Re: Move the badges

The badges are OK, but the ignore button is really intrusive... I'd suggest it is aligned on the opposite side of the page to the badge.

Or that you have to go to a user's profile to ignore them, to a)tidy things up b)make it require a tiny bit of effort

Re: Bug?

Yeah I see my badge on the post above, it seems the badge isn't shown immediately on new posts or something.

edit: oh it worked this time, maybe things were still being rolled out.

JDX Gold badge

Bug?

I see badges against other posters' posts, but not against my own. However if I go to "view your posts" by badge IS shown.

edit: just because I can! Woop.

Scoop! The inside story of the news website that saved the BBC

JDX Gold badge

That used to be the case, but is less and less true as time goes on.

It's almost like the internet itself is changing over time or something!

It's a tough line to walk between "it was good enough for 1999, why change it" and change for change's sake... it's important to remember old sites weren't static and simple because it was considered better, but because connection speeds and browsers back then couldn't handle anything more!

Re: Are they ever..

Good totally subjective post there Fred. Well, it's not 100% subjective if I'm fair, the objective parts are simply incorrect. "Profoundly unsafe" indeed... because your local hard-drive is statistically safer than a data-centre with RAID-6, etc, etc.

JDX Gold badge

Realistically how long until that all slides into the background and you stop noticing it, exactly the way an newly plastered wall looks ugly and then 2 years later a dinner guest mentions "you're still doing the house up then?" and you realise you never got round to painting it!

Review comment

El Reg were asking about review feedback recently... well can I suggest the price should be very prominantly displayed? Either in the vital stats section or ideally, under the title. Seeing of something is a £200 or £2000 pricepoint could influence not only how I read the review, but whether I bother to read it at all!

Re: This is what happens when marketing people

Um, that's a pretty silly point. The whole point is that software people are good at making software, not good at making business decisions or doing marketing or customer service or UX design...

Software created only by software people with no input from anyone else is one of the reasons open-source retains a bad reputation... applications which are tremendously powerful but entirely unintuitive!

JDX Gold badge

On the other hand, people leaving fake bad/good reviews for whatever reason is also important. In some cases (say Tripadvisor) it could potentially sink your business if a few people decided you were their target for the week.

A real review of a real product by a real person is not too bad IMO - reviews are not the same as YouTube comments.
